Recycle Old Manufactured Homes

Manufactured homes can be dismantled with relative ease.

Old homes of any kind, including manufactured homes or mobile homes, contain all manner of useful materials that can be used for a variety of purposes. Wood paneling, old tiles, metal pipes and light fixtures can all be recycled. You can use these parts for many different kinds of projects, including home improvement projects and other activities such as art projects. If you have no use for them yourself, sell or donate them to resale or repurposing shops or charities. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Make a list of the supplies you'll need for your project, if you have a specific project in mind. Usable supplies might include cabinet fronts, countertops and metal pipes, as well as screws, nails, nuts and bolts. Bits of broken glass from windows can be used to make collages or stained glass projects.

2. Look for recyclable parts. Examples of these parts are wood panels without mold or holes, bricks, stones and fixtures that are in functional condition or can be repaired with a minimum of time and effort. What makes a part usable will be determined by its intended use.

3. Repair the parts you have chosen as necessary. Wood may need sanding or holes filled with putty, while windows may need the glass reframed or cracks around the edges sealed.

4. Analyze the structure to see if it can be used in some other way. Some older mobile homes and prefab houses may look unattractive but still be livable. In some cases you can move structurally sound buildings to new lots and make them livable with some minimal repairs.

5. Remove all wiring, cables and metal such as that found in heaters or run-down refrigerators. Donate or sell these parts to secondhand building supply stores or charities such as Habitat for Humanity. Contact local metal recycling companies to find out what types of metal they accept.

6. Pull out the fixtures. Lighting fixtures, door knobs and bathroom or sink fixtures can be reused so long as they aren't rusted through, although lighting fixtures may need to be rewired.

7. Use a spatula and hammer to carefully crack the grouting along the edges of showers, bath tubs, sinks and toilets after cleaning them and turning off the water. The products can easily be sold or given away to be used by others. If something cracks, consider a whimsical solution, such as using the cracked toilet bowl as a planter for flowers.

8. Remove all doors, shelves and cabinets that are made of wood. Cabinets and doors can be extremely costly and are highly sought after in recycling shops.

9. Take out glass windows, stained glass decorations, sliding glass doors, mirrored closet doors and any other glass. Broken pieces can be donated for use in mosaics or to make a pathway at the new house, while the functional pieces can be used to replace broken windows or in simple projects such as creating a greenhouse for your plants.

Remove A Dent With A Hair Dryer

A hair dryer can be used to repair a small car dent.

Car dents aren't only unsightly reminders of an accident. They can also bring about further damage. A dent that exposes a metal surface can cause rust. Repairing these dents can also be costly if you take the vehicle to a car body professional. However, some dents that are small enough, like the occasional parking lot ding, can be repaired at home with a hair dryer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean off the dent surface and surrounding area.

2. Make both sides of the dent accessible, if possible. For example, if the dent is on the car's hood, open the hood part way so you can reach the dent's underside.

3. Turn on the hair dryer. Hold it about two inches from the dent's surface.

4. Check the dent's malleability every two minutes by gently pressing in the dent's underside or rubbing the surface around the dent. If the area is malleable, apply pressure and push out the dent.

Determine The Cost Basis For A Rental Home

Many factors affect the basis of your rental property.

The basis is another term for the amount you have invested in an asset. Typically it is the purchase price, which may change during the time the asset is held, and this is called the adjusted basis. For rental property, correctly calculating both the basis and adjusted basis is necessary for tax purposes, especially when you want to sell the property.

Instructions

Determine the Cost Basis

1. Start with the purchase price of your home. Add the following settlement and closing costs: abstract (title) fees, installation of utilities, legal fees (including title search and sales contract preparation), recording fees, surveys, transfer taxes and owner's title insurance.

2. Add any fees or taxes you paid to or on behalf of the seller. These include back taxes, interest, repairs or sales commissions.

3. Exclude charges for casualty insurance premiums, rent or utilities for use of the property before closing. You may deduct these as expenses on Schedule E for the year in which they were incurred.

4. Exclude costs of obtaining financing or refinancing, including points, mortgage insurance premiums, loan assumption fess, credit reports and appraisal fees. These charges should be capitalized separately from the property itself and deducted over the life of loan, rather than added to basis.

Additions to the Basis

5. Start with the cost basis as previously determined.

6. Add the cost of capital improvements to the property, including replacing the entire roof, building an addition, paving the driveway, rewiring or installing air conditioning. These add to the value of the property. Additionally, include costs to repair damage to the property, whether or not it was covered by insurance. Routine maintenance is not an addition to basis.

7. Add assessments for local improvements. These are levied in addition to annual property taxes, and may cover roads, sidewalks or water connections. Your regular property taxes do not affect the basis of the property and should be deducted as expenses each year. Maintenance costs on the local improvements can also be expensed.

8. Add zoning fees and any legal costs you pay to defend a title to the property.

Decreases to Basis

9. Subtract any deductions made in prior years for amortization and depreciation on the property. Your tax returns should show accumulated amounts for these deductions.

10. Subtract any tax credits received for energy improvements such as solar power or energy-efficient appliances. Only the net cost of improvements increases the basis.

11. Subtract any insurance payments received against casualty loss or theft as well as the amount of any tax deduction you made against such damage. The cost to repair damage was an addition to the basis, but only to the extent not reimbursed by insurance. For example, if a storm damaged your home and repairs cost $10,000, for which insurance covered $8,000, the result is a $2,000 net increase to the basis.

12. Total all the decreases to basis, and subtract from the adjusted basis to determine the correct basis for your rental property.

Repair Onkyo Receivers

Save money and extend the life of your Onkyo receiver by repairing it yourself. Onkyo has been a high-end audio product manufacturer since 1946 and is a consistent innovator in the consumer audio segment. The Onkyo receivers are consistently recognized for audio quality, performance and customization that allow consumers more control over their home entertainment systems. But problems can arise over time with steady usage including over heating. Most of these problems can be repaired without the need of a technician.

Instructions

1. Unplug the receiver from the wall outlet and let it sit for five seconds before plugging it back in if it will not power on. Power back on the unit and if it still does not power on immediately, unplug the receiver and all inputs and connections including the speakers. Let the receiver sit for one hour as it may have overheated, which activated the protection circuit.

2. Reconnect the power plug and set the volume at maximum. Turn the volume to the lowest volume; disconnect the speakers and components if the receiver comes back on. Take the receiver to a repair shop if it does not power on especially if under warranty as the power supply may need to be replaced.

3. Reset your network settings to fix faulty connection issues. Enter the "Setup" menu and use the onscreen guide to adjust the network settings. Scroll to the "Hardware Setup" option, select "Network" and enter your IP address then press "Return" and save the settings. Test connection for audio streaming and other wireless features.

4. Adjust the speaker levels to get the right sound balance in your listening area. Place the microphone in a central listening location to use the Audyssey MultiEQ Room Correction to calibrate the audio in the room. Connect the microphone to the setup mic jack on the receiver interface. Select the necessary settings for your speakers and subwoofer. Choose the correct tone for your needs when the receiver tests each speaker.

5. Choose the correct tone for your needs when the receiver tests each speaker. Move the setup microphone to the next position and select the tones that best fit that area. Some Onkyo receivers can do up to six listening areas. Save your selected options and disconnect the microphone when the setup is complete.

Clean Double Pane Windows

Double pane windows can fog up and get dirty in between the glass panes. This is a huge problem for many people because it is almost impossible to clean between the glass. In fact, if you call in a professional window installer, they will probably tell you that you are going to need new windows. This isn't the case. While it is a much more involved process than you might be hoping for, there is a way for you to defog double pane windows and actually clean them as well. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Drill a 1/8 inch hole in the top corner of your window pane. Do this carefully, and cool the bit with water while you are drilling. This should be done on the inside of your window as well.

2. Drill another hole, same size and same method, in the opposite bottom corner of the window. The idea behind these holes is to allow any of the fog or condensation that is between the panes of glass to escape. Allow the window to stay that way for a day or two, or until the fog is gone from between the glass panes. If the fog was your only problem, you can skip to step 6.

3. Take a section of the small plastic tubing and insert it into the bottom hole in the window pane. Make sure there is enough tubing inside the window to siphon liquid out of it, and surround the hose with putty at the hole in the window. Also put a coffee can or bucket at the other end of the hose to catch the liquid.

4. Use dental water pick or a funnel and more plastic tubing to spray the inside of the glass through the top hole with either alcohol or glass buffer. The glass buffer is much stronger, and will clean hard water stains better than alcohol, but alcohol is cheaper and easier to use.

5. Allow the bottom hose to siphon the liquid out of the window while you are cleaning. If this isn't working, you can attempt to attach the small tubing to a wet/dry vac. Let the window dry out for a couple of days after you are finished.

6. Cut a circular piece of clear packing tape, about ¼ inch in diameter to cover each hole. Then poke small holes in the tape using the needle. This will allow air and moisture to escape from inside the window panes, and will keep insects out.

Repair Broken Laptop Keys

Laptops literally make the world go round. Many people can't imagine a day without theirs. But when a laptop key breaks, you're usually forced to make a tough decision. Send it back to the manufacturer and be without it for a couple of weeks, or fix it yourself. Here are a few tips to help you do whichever you decide.

Instructions

1. Glue the laptop keys back on your keyboard. This method is only for the nimble fingered. Once the key has broken, inspect it. Many keys have plastic latches on them, or attach by "snapping" onto something. If this is the case, and the latch for the key simply broke into a couple of pieces, you can try Crazy Glue. Glue the pieces together and let them set for a few minutes. Then try snapping the key back into place on your keyboard.

2. Purchase spare parts off websites. If the only thing you are missing is the actual laptop keys, then try to purchase one from ebay or sparepartswarehouse (see Resources below). This is like traveling to your local junkyard.

3. Send the computer back to the manufacturer. If your laptop is under warranty, then you should definitely take advantage of the warranty program. If your laptop is no longer under warranty, this method of repair can be quite costly, as many manufacturers have tiered repair prices. Usually the first tier is several hundred dollars. Also, manufacturers are notoriously slow with getting your laptop back to you. It can take a month or more.

4. Hire a laptop repair specialist. These guys cut to the chase when fixing your computer. They will be cheaper and quicker than the manufacturer, but by virtue of them working on the machines, they may void all or portions of your warranty. Check out the websites laptoprepair or laptoprescue (see Resources below for links) for more information on repair broken laptop keys.

Buy Garage Doors In The Cincinnati Ohio Area

You can work with a Cincinnati-area dealer to find the right garage door for your home.

Cincinnati area residents who wish to purchase a garage door should investigate the garage door manufacturers that produce the doors that the local dealers sell before purchasing a garage door from a local dealer. Compare features among the different garage doors including the doors' materials, warranties, installation options, consumer ratings and dealer reputation. In addition to adding to the overall presentation of your home, a good electronic garage door makes entering and exiting your garage more convenient, shields you from inclement weather and increases your security Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Request that local Cincinnati-area dealership send a representative to your home to provide information about their garage door and give you a firm quote based on your door measurement, chosen door material and requested options. In the Cincinnati area Salem Door Dealer sells the Wayne Dalton Garage Door Series of garage doors in Contemporary, Colonial, Sonoma and Ranch styles. Dan the Doorman sells Wayne Dalton and Genie garage doors. Genie provides instructions and technical advice to allow homeowners to install their own garage door opener. The PDQ garage door dealer in Cincinnati sells PDQ residential doors with and without insulation that will appropriately fit remodeled garage-apartments.

2. Select the garage door that you want for your home. Manufacturers of garage doors produce doors made of steel, wood or wood composite, so investigate the type of door that will fit your needs before placing your order. Consider whether you will want to carry out maintenance on your garage door in the future. Wood doors will require a regular cleaning to preserve the wood as well as sealing and staining every few years. Metal, steel and fiberglass doors only need periodic washes with a scrub brush and garden hose. Cincinnati garage door maintenance companies including Garage Door of Cincy, A Action and Bushelman Supply Company. These firms provide for your garage door maintenance needs, including yearly lubrication of the springs and tracks of the garage door to keep the mechanisms working properly.

3. Investigate the garage door dealer's ratings with the Better Business Bureau of Cincinnati before entering into a contract to buy a garage door. Check to ascertain that the dealer has Better Business Bureau (BBB) accreditation and note whether the dealer has unresolved complaints filed against the business. The BBB report on each business will give its reliability report and a rating based on its record of service and response to customer needs.

House Rehabbing Pointers And Tips

With careful planning and execution, your rehab job can be a success.

Even major projects can be completed by average homeowners with a willingness to learn new skills. When attempting any repair or remodeling project, break the larger jobs down into smaller steps that can be more readily completed. Perhaps the most important thing to learn is when to call in professionals. Does this Spark an idea?

Plan First

Plan ahead to ensure all materials and tools needed are on site when needed.

Never start a home rehab job without carefully planning each step first. Spending extra time planning generally saves time and money later in the rehab process.

Define the job parameters. Clarify the intention, which may differ if the home is being rehabbed to live in, as compared to the intention to sell it for a profit.

Prioritize each anticipated rehab job. Determine which jobs should be completed first. Even if it would be nice to repair the water damaged ceilings, it would be foolish to do so without first repairing the cause of the water damage.

Consider which tools will need to be purchased (saw, hammers and other hand tools) and which ones can be rented (scaffolding, air compressors, sand blasters, etc.), and plan ahead so all needed tools and equipment are on site and ready to use when needed.

If contractors are utilized, careful scheduling is required to keep expenses to a minimum. For example, electricians and plumbers must have all rough-in work completed before sheet rockers can go to work.

Get Estimates for All Projects

Obtain complete cost estimates for all labor and materials before beginning any project.

Since the cost of any project can exceed original limits quickly without proper cost management, carefully keep track of all cost aspects of the job.

Not all jobs may be completed by the homeowner. In most areas, code requirements limit the scope of work a homeowner may do.

When the use of a contractor is required, get complete estimates and references prior to signing any contract.

It is generally far easier to work with one general contractor and have that individual deal with all other contractors. Rehab expert Steve Cook says, "Now that I work exclusively with one general contractor, my life is much easier since I only have to meet one person. He contacts everyone else and then relays the results of his conversations with them to me."

A contractor may try to get a homeowner to sign a "by the hour" labor agreement, but that agreement will generally benefit only the contractor. The contract should establish a basic fee with overage limits included.

For projects that will be completed by the homeowner, taking the time to visit materials suppliers for cost estimates is important. Costs are quickly changing in our current economy, and prices that were valid a year ago may be significantly different now. Get an estimate for materials and delivery charges when delivery is required.

Get All Permits Before Starting

Nearly all locales require building permits for rehab jobs. Ron Guy, a professional rehab specialist from Baltimore, summed it up when he said, "I want to limit my personal liability on my jobs. I don't want someone to be seriously injured down the road because of faulty electric or HVAC work. If I don't pull permits, I am very vulnerable to claims of shoddy work." That means claims from everyone from family and friends to new owners if the property is sold.

Keep Window Frames From Sweating

WIndow sweating isn't seen as often in newer homes.

Sweating around window frames or on the glass panes on the inside of a house is common in many colder areas. This is especially true in older homes that are less likely to have good ventilation or that have lesser quality windows. As air warms, it expands and holds moisture, and when it cools it looks to expel the excess water as condensation, which is most commonly seen around windows where there is insufficient insulation or air leakage from the outside. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a home vent fan in areas with high moisture like bathrooms or laundry rooms. These vents should dispel moist air outside and have sufficient power for the room size. Fans come in different capacities and are easy to calculate for placement. Make sure there is a gap under the room's door to allow air to enter when running the fan.

2. Ensure that gas fireplaces are properly vented or that you regulate their use to avoid moisture buildup, which is especially common in older or unvented gas fireplaces or space heaters.

3. Avoid cooking foods in the kitchen that produce large amounts of steam. Boiling water for vegetables or pasta or steam cookers produce a good deal of steam that vents into a room and can cause moisture to build up. Use a kitchen fan that vents to the outside to alleviate this if there is a large amount of kitchen steam.

4. Establish a set temperature for the home, and make sure vents don't blow directly upward at windows. Set the thermostat to a constant average temperature of 66 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, and add diverters over heating vents to direct warm air out into the room away from the walls.

5. Use weather stripping and caulk to seal any air leaks around windows and doors. Cold air from leaking windows meeting warm inside air is one of the main causes of window sweating.

6. Install a permanent or portable dehumidifier to regulate the humidity in the home or rooms where there is a problem. Portable dehumidifiers are relatively inexpensive and are a quick and easy solution.

Checklist For Possible Home Repairs

A checklist can make home repairs more affordable.

Whether you're thinking about a home remodeling project or putting your house on the market, knowing what items need to be repaired is essential. There are many components that go into a safe, well-maintained home, and without making a checklist, you can miss something vital that can end up costing you more money. For most homes, the major areas for possible repairs include fixtures and appliances, roofs, plumbing, heating and electrical systems and the foundation. Does this Spark an idea?

Appliances and Fixtures

Major appliances such as refrigerators, stoves and dishwashers should be checked to ensure that they're in optimal working order. If something needs to be fixed, you should calculate the repair costs versus the value of buying a new appliance. This is more important if you're selling your house versus making upgrades and improvements. You should also inspect fixtures such as toilets, sinks and faucets to assess repair or replacement options.

Roof

Determine whether there are leaks from a damaged roof or whether shingles need to be repaired. A contractor can inspect the roof to assess its condition and evaluate the need for repairs or replacement. You should also determine whether a new roof would add to the value of your home, since this can be the deciding factor in what option you choose.

Plumbing, Heating and Electrical

The main cog of any house is the mechanical system that keeps the air conditioning, heating and water running. The plumbing system should be checked for clogs and leaks, both inside and outside the home. This includes leaky toilets, faucets, outdoor hoses and sprinklers. Toilets that flush, refill and still continue to run may increase your water bill. Heating and cooling components such as water heaters, air conditioning vents and furnaces should be inspected for potential repairs. The electrical system should also be checked to ensure proper wiring and blowout protection.

Foundation, Mold and Termites

Checking the foundation of the house for structural integrity is important for determining possible repairs. Older homes tend to have certain structural problems that get worse over a period of time. In addition, all the walls of the house, including in attics and basements (if applicable), should be inspected for signs of mold or termite damage, both of which can be expensive to eradicate if not detected early.

Will Medicare Pay For Adjustable Beds

Will Medicare Pay for Adjustable Beds?

As you deal with illness or disability, your physician may prescribe an adjustable bed for you. Doctors prescribe these beds for many conditions, including postsurgery recovery; sleep disorders; spinal, circulatory, digestive or respiratory problems; various types of pain; and even restless leg syndrome. For those on Medicare, an adjustable bed may not be the best option unless there is a secondary funding source involved.

Identification

Medicare is health insurance for people over the age of 65. It also covers those under the age of 65 (and over 18) when they've been diagnosed with certain disabilities, and it covers anyone with permanent kidney failure. Since Medicare is mandated by the United States government, you must have lived in the U.S. for a minimum of 5 years and have legally entered the country to qualify. Medicare has several divisions, including Part A Hospital Insurance, Part B Medical Insurance, Part C Medicare Advantage Plans and Part D Drug Insurance. Part B also covers durable medical equipment (DME). Hospital beds are considered DME.

Function

Medicare does not pay for adjustable beds, but they can be billed by your DME provider on a nonassigned basis. This means that you are required to pay the provider for the rental or purchase of the bed, but that the provider will submit a "nonassigned" claim to Medicare on your behalf, including all completed paperwork. This way, if Medicare should choose to pay the claim, it would pay you directly. However, in almost all cases, Medicare won't reimburse for an adjustable bed. Still, for clients who have secondary insurance, a proper denial from Medicare is necessary for coverage to occur.

Considerations

Most durable medical equipment providers who are contracted with their state's Medicaid program will take assignment for adjustable beds if they're able to obtain preauthorization from Medicaid for coverage. "Assigned" means that the provider bills Medicare and Medicaid (or the insurance company) directly and accepts payment directly, writing off any charges above those allowed. Allowed charges are determined by Medicare, Medicaid and the insurance companies and are what these organizations consider "reasonable charges" for certain services. This way, the provider is allowed to bill for and be paid for only the allowed amount. If a provider bills for anything beyond this "allowed" amount, it is considered fraud.

Prevention/Solution

If you or a loved one is on Medicare and a physician has prescribed an adjustable bed, the first step is to determine if your secondary insurance will pay for the bed. If not, you might consider discussing alternative equipment with your physician. For example, a semielectric hospital bed is covered under Medicare's capped rental program. This means that Medicare pays your DME provider for 10 months' rental, and then gives you the option of continuing to rent or purchasing the bed. If you choose the rent option, the provider bills Medicare for the remainder of the predetermined rental period, and then the equipment is placed on a maintenance program. Then, the provider bills Medicare once every 6 months for the cost of 1 month's rent. In return, the provider retains ownership of the bed but is required to keep it in good working order (or replace as necessary) during the entire rental period. When the bed is no longer medically necessary, it must be returned to the provider. If the purchase option is chosen, the provider bills Medicare for a specified amount of time and then converts the rental to a purchase. In this case, the patient owns the bed. The provider may bill Medicare for repairs to the bed when a patient owns it.

Potential

Assuming a semielectric hospital bed is an option for you, Medicare requires that certain requirements be met before it will cover one for a client. That is, the need must be medically necessary under Medicare's standards. To prove medical necessity, your durable medical equipment provider must provide a properly completed Certificate of Medical Necessity (CMN). This must be Medicare's standard form and must be completed in a very specific manner by the prescribing physician, and it must be kept up-to-date by the provider for the length of the rental period and for any repairs if you choose to purchase the bed. A physician may choose to enter "99" for length of need on the CMN, which would indicate a "lifetime" need to Medicare. In this case, the CMN would not generally need to be updated.

Patch A Mobile Home Roof

Patch a mobile home roof with simple supplies.

Temperature fluctuations, harsh weather conditions and aging cause leaks in mobile home roofs. Brown stains on mobile home ceilings and walls often indicate roof leaks. Rusted and worn areas on roofs are also signs of leaks. Failure to repair roof leaks eventually causes permanent damage to walls, insulation, doors and flooring. Patch roof leaks promptly to prevent generating more damage and preserve the structural integrity of the home. Basic supplies are effective at patching mobile home roofs. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Access the roof using a sturdy ladder. Walk on the trusses or edge of the roof to prevent breaking a seam.

2. Scrape the damaged area using a flexible putty knife. Remove all dirt, flaking roof coating and grime from the area.

3. Adhere one-inch wide strips of butyl tape to the roof. Lay the tape strips in a square around the perimeter of the damaged area.

4. Lay a sheet of galvanized metal on the butyl tape. Place the metal so that it overlaps the hole by 3 inches on all four sides.

5. Drill a hole every inch along the perimeter of the metal patch. Make sure to drill through the butyl tape and existing roof metal as well.

6. Drill screws into the holes to secure the metal patch to the roof. Apply caulk to the edges of the metal patch and around the screws.

7. Allow the caulk to dry according to the manufacturer's directions. Use a paintbrush to apply roof coating over the four edges of the patch. Overlap the roof coating onto the metal roof.

Hud Homeowner Grants

The U.S. government created the Department of Housing and Urban Development, also referred to as HUD, to help Americans find adequate housing. One way that HUD accomplishes this is through various grant opportunities meant to subsidize the costs of owning a home for American families and individuals. First-time homeowners, those buying properties that are in need of extensive repairs or homeowners looking to upgrade the energy efficiency of their current home may be eligible for HUD grant opportunities for homeowners.

First-Time Homeowners

HUD offers grant assistance to first-time homeowners through the Homeownership Voucher Program. Families or individuals who haven't at least partially owned a previous residence and earn at least the federal minimum wage are eligible for a monthly voucher that covers a monthly mortgage payment up to 30 percent of the home buyer's income. Interested first-time homeowners should contact their local public housing agency, or PHA, to find out about the local voucher program.

Home Rehabilitation

Repair and rehabilitation of single family homes can be funded through a HUD grant-funded loan program specifically designed to pay for home repairs. These loans, known as Section 203(k) loans, are administered by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), a HUD agency. Section 203(k) loan assistance is only available for repair projects to be performed on a property that the loan applicant is currently in the process of buying. Loan funding can be used to rehabilitate the property, purchase and move a property or refinance the liens currently held against the house's title.

Green Energy Retrofit Assistance

HUD also offers grant assistance to make energy efficient upgrades to your property through energy efficient appliances or solar power installations. This grant program is coordinated by HUD's Office of Affordable Housing Preservation. Grant funding available through this program can be applied toward either the installation or maintenance of green energy technologies. A homeowner can obtain up to $15,000 for one property unit through the green energy retrofit program.

Applying for Grants

A homeowner must register with Grants.gov, the official online database for all federal grants, before applying for a grant through HUD. Visit the Grants.gov web site and select "Find Grant Opportunities" in the left margin to begin your search. Once you've identified the grant program for which you wish to apply, you can complete the grant application online or download the grant application and complete it offline to make filling the online form easier. You can scan or fax copies of official documents which HUD needs to process your application.

Patch A Large Round Hole In Drywall

A large round hole in drywall may be repaired with a piece of drywall to patch and wood strips for mounting the patch. The wood strips create a stable frame on which to mount the new drywall. Before patching the hole, check inside the wall for electrical wiring and pipes. Repair any damage to these components first, and secure any wiring to avoid cutting it during the drywall repair. If pipes are present, adjust the frame and patch to avoid cutting into the pipe. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width and length of the hole with a tape measure. Cut a square from the drywall sheet measuring 2 inches longer in width and length than the hole, using a draywall saw. Use a square to ensure straight cuts.

2. Place the cut drywall piece over the hole and trace the outline of the drywall piece onto the wall with a pencil. Set the drywall aside.

3. Cut along the penciled outline with a drywall saw. This turns the round hole into a square opening. Use a utility knife to trim the edges of the square.

4. Measure the width and length of the opening. On the piece of drywall used to outline the cut, mark out the width and length of the opening, but deduct 1/2 inch from each measurement. The patch must be slightly smaller than the opening so it can fit into the opening. Set the patch aside.

5. Cut the lumber for the framework. Cut four pieces of 1-by-3 lengths of lumber with a table saw, adding an additional 2 inches to the two pieces that will run the width of the hole, and cutting the two pieces for the width so they fit between the two lengthwise pieces to create a frame.

6. Mount the top piece of lumber, positioning it behind the drywall across the top of the opening and secure it from the front with drywall screws. Use a drill to drill in the screws. Position the piece so that a portion of the lumber is exposed. This allows for securing the patch to the lumber frame.

7. Continue framing out the opening from the backside, using drywall screws to secure the lumber.

8. Place the drywall patch into the opening and secure it to the framework with drywall screws.

9. Tape over the perimeter of the patch with mesh tape, centering the tape over the gap between the patch and the opening. Extend the tape approximately 1 1/2 inches past the corners of the patch and overlap it at the corners.

10. Apply drywall mud over the taped areas with a 6-inch taping blade, smoothing the compound over the surface. Continue mudding--applying the mud compound--to the patch so the tape and screws are no longer visible. Apply enough compound so as to smooth the mud outward 6 inches beyond the edge of the patch.

11. Feather the compound outward beyond the patch. Feathering is smoothing out the mud with the flat edge of the taping blade until it blends with the surrounding wall. Allow the mud to dry thoroughly.

12. Sand the compound using a hand sander so it's level with the wall. Apply primer and paint to complete the repair.

Fix A Dent In A Chrome Bumper

Chrome bumpers don't dent easily, but when they do, most auto shops recommend replacing them. The reason is because when you dent the chrome the metal actually stretches and warps, making it nearly impossible to hammer it back into to shape. Combine that with the fact that chrome can easily crack or peel when you are trying to reshape it, and that makes replacement the only way to return the bumper to pristine condition. If you don't mind slight imperfections, you can fix a dent in a chrome bumper that will only be noticeable if studied up close and will save you the cost of expensive replacements.

Instructions

1. Arrange yourself behind the dent. You may need to drive onto jack stands or remove the bumper. Make sure to set the emergency break so the car doesn't move during repairs.

2. Enlist someone to help you brace the dent from the outside to prevent it from popping out the other way. Hold a flexible silicone cutting mat over the dent.

3. Place the wood block over the dent's bulge. Lightly tap the block with the mallet, gradually adding more force as necessary. The wood block will diffuse the force of the blows and keep the chrome from cracking.

4. Check the dent from the side you are hammering. If the surface appears smooth, remove the silicone mat from the other side. Some waving in the chrome is to be expected. Repeat as necessary until the dent is as smoothed out as possible.

Repair Bushnell Binoculars

Bushnell makes a range of optical products, including a line of binoculars. The binoculars are marketed for bird-watching, wildlife watching, field use and general recreation. Bushnell binoculars have gas filled optical chambers that provide fog-free viewing. Adjustable focus and eye pieces complement the optics. Bushnell doesn't recommend that you attempt any repairs to the lenses or glass because these repairs should be done by an optic professional, but there are some simple repairs you can do yourself.

Instructions

1. Tighten and adjust the focus dial screws. When the focus dial is too loose, tighten the screws. If the focus dials are not turning as needed, turn counterclockwise to loosen them.

2. Locate any cracks along the rubber or optic chamber plastic. If present, squirt a small amount of clear super-adhesive into the crack, wipe off the excess while wet and let the remainder dry to seal the cracks.

3. Wipe off all lenses with the dust-free chamois cloth. Look through the barrels as you wipe down and clean to make sure all small dust particles are removed. Spray the lenses down with the compressed air and get all remaining dust particles off the glass.

4. Use the adhesive and tweezers to fix broken strap holders. Pinch the holder together at the crack with the tweezers and squirt some adhesive along the cracked seam. Let the adhesive dry.

Clean An Old And Dirty Wood Deck

An old wood deck needs cleaning to look its best.

An old wood deck that hasn't received regular maintenance can be a major cleaning project. Ingrained dirt and debris will need to be removed. Prepare yourself for a time-consuming chore. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Hose down the deck using a high-powered spray nozzle to loosen any debris and surface dirt.

2. Use a putty knife to remove debris that is stuck between the boards of the deck. This can be a painstaking process if there is a lot of buildup.

3. Rinse the debris away with the hose.

4. Mix together warm water and laundry detergent in a bucket to create a sudsy cleaning solution. Dip a stiff fiber brush into the cleaning solution and scrub the deck, working in one small area at a time.

5. Rinse each area after you scrub it. Each time you rinse, you should notice more of the wood's natural color returning. You might have to scrub the same area more than once.

6. Rinse the entire deck when you have finished scrubbing and allow it to dry. This could take a few days.

Negotiate A House Price In A Buyers Market

Negotiate a House Price in a Buyers Market

Negotiating the price of a house can be a frustrating experience. For most people, a home is the largest purchase they will ever make and it is important to not walk away with buyer's regret after the transaction is complete. A buyers market puts more control in the hands of the buyer and in many cases, more room for negotiation of the price.

Instructions

1. Make the seller think he is winning the negotiation. The key to any successful negotiation is to make both sides think they have won. You can do this by not immediately accepting any offer, which will make the seller think his price was too low. You may want to offer to split the difference between your offer and the asking price. This will seem like a win-win situation. Both sides are giving up an equal amount to arrive at a price in the middle of the two proposals.

2. Rely on an outside party or someone who is not readily available when a counter offer is made. By saying that you need to talk over the offer with your spouse, a parent or business adviser, you can make that person the bad guy while maintaining the relationship with the seller when you tell him the price is still too high. This is a common tactic used by car salesman when they take your offer to the sales manager of the dealership.

3. Gather information about the market. To successfully negotiate a fair price, be armed with information about the real estate market in the area. Compile recent sales prices of homes in the area as well as pricing trends in the neighborhood and surrounding areas. Find home sales that can back up your offer and possibly even make your offer appear more appealing because it is a bit higher than recent home sale prices.

4. Concede in areas other than price. The price of the home is only one area of negotiation. Other areas may include who pays for closing costs, who pays for any needed repairs or items such as appliances that you would like to be included in the sale. If you cannot get the price to what you think is a great deal, consider negotiating other options.

5. Enlist the help of a professional. An experienced real estate agent can be a great ally in negotiating the price of the home. As the buyer, you lose nothing by using the services of a real estate agent. His fees are covered by the seller when the home is sold.

Install Metal Roof On A Mobile Home

Install Metal Roof on a Mobile Home

Installing a metal roof on a mobile home can be a do-it-yourself project saving you a lot of money. The most difficult part of the project is removing the old roof and scraping the roof clean of debris. Consider asking friends to help or hire day workers. Once the roof is clean, laying a new roof is not difficult. There is a step by step procedure of laying insulation, furring strips, corrugated metal roofing, foam closure strips and setting the gables. If you can use a saw and a drill, you can build a metal roof on your mobile home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Unfold strips of fan-fold insulation across the length of the roof after it has been scraped and cleaned thoroughly. Cut any excess insulation with a utility knife and duct tape the insulation seams.

2. Lay strips of 1-by-4-inch furring, end to end and 2 feet apart, across the length of the roof. Locate the rafters by feeling around the surface of the roof. Lay chalk lines across the width of the roof, and over the furring strips, to mark the location of the rafters. Use a drill and 3½-inch deck screws to secure the furring strips to the rafters.

3. Measure the width of the roof and add an additional 8 inches for overhang allowance. Use a circular saw to cut the corrugated sheets of metal to the correct size. Position the first sheet of metal flush against the edge of the house, making sure there is 4 inches of overhang on each side. Insert the foam closure strips on each side of the metal sheet. Secure the corrugated metal sheet using a drill and 3½-inch deck screws to attach the metal to the furring strips. Use 3-inch white sheet metal screws with neoprene washers on the ridges of the corrugated metal sheeting.

4. Overlap the corrugated metal sheets in one direction only. One edge of each corrugated sheet has writing on it, the other edge does not. Overlap the edge without writing on the edge of the previously laid sheet that has writing. The overlapping will prevent the roof from leaking. Insert the foam closure strips into each end of every metal sheet. Insert the foam closure strips into the ends. Secure the corrugated metal sheet using a drill and 3½-inch deck screws to attach the metal to the furring strips. Use 3-inch white sheet metal screws with neoprene washers on the ridges in the metal sheeting until the roof is covered with corrugated metal.

5. Remove larger vents such as the furnace vent before laying the corrugated metal in the area. Measure the vent locations, mark the metal sheet and cut vent holes in the corrugated metal roofing. Replace all cracked and damaged rubber boots around the vents. Use neoprene rubber roof cement to caulk around all vents after removing old or broken sealant. Reinstall all vent hardware.

6. To finish the roof, use a drill and 3½-inch deck screws placed every 12 inches, on the top and bottom, to attach the gable trim on each end of the new roof.

Clean Mold Off Of Outside Brick

Mold on exterior brick

Brick is for the most part a maintenance-free home exterior but it can develop mold if it is in an area where it does not get sunlight or good air flow. Brick also can be used for sidewalks, steps and patios but again can develop mold which can become slippery when wet. If the brick is not cleaned annually or semi-annually, the mold will spread to other areas. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Mix 1 quart of bleach in bucket with 3 quarts of water.

2. Put on rubber gloves and dip the scrub brush in the water bucket.

3. Scrub the moldy area with the scrub brush, moving the brush in a circular motion.

4. Wait five minutes and brush off the cleaning solution.

5. Pour the bleach and water solution over the surface if it is flat.

6. Scrub the moldy area with a broom to further loosen up the mold

7. Spray the cleaning solution off the brick with a garden hose, rinsing away all of the cleaning solution.

8. Repeat the process until all of the mold is removed.

Nashville Tennessee Senior Citizen Home Repair Grants

Eighty-six percent of seniors polled in a study by AARP made basic changes to their homes to extend their ability to remain independent -- but 36 percent of seniors polled could not make changes due to the expense associated with repairs. Several organizations in Nashville, Tennessee, offer to senior citizens grants and other funding options that provide the resources to make home improvements

Emergency Repair

The Nashville Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency (NMDHA) offers an emergency grant for the repair of a debilitated home. Applicants must be over 55 years of age and earn no more than $21,250 annually as of July 2011. The grant pays up to $2,000 for material costs and the repair of unsafe conditions. The program also provides labor in addition to the $2,000 grant.

Weatherization Grants

The NMDHA also provides grants to keep homes warm in the winter and cool during the summer months. The program provides insulation, caulking and other weatherization services for renters and home owners. Income requirements are based on family size. For example, a family of two cannot exceed income of $2,428 monthly, while a single applicant can earn no more than $1,805 per month.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, a program administered by the Metropolitan Action Commission, provides grants for energy assistance and weatherization. Elderly applicants receive priority assistance to help control the cost of energy bills. Contact the Metropolitan Action Commission in Nashville for additional information.

Rehabilitation

The NMDHA also offers other options, such as the deferred payment loan for seniors. Applicants receive up to $36,000 recorded as a deed of trust and promissory note. Recipients of the loan do not have to pay the loan unless they vacate, sell or abandon the property. The program does not require payments as long as the recipient remains in the property. Applicant income cannot exceed between $21,250 to $40,050, which is based on family size.

Other Options

The Tennessee Housing Development Agency provides grants to senior citizens age 60 years or older to repair damaged or disabled systems in the home. The programs offers up to $10,000 and requires a 50 percent match from another source. Applicants can contact the Tennessee Housing Development Agency for information.

The NMDHA offers free repairs and low-interest loans, which are available to everyone. The Adopt-a-House program offers labor and repair services free of charge for emergency repairs. The Rehab Loan program provides up to $36,000 for repairs at a 3 percent interest rate as of July 2011. Applicants must reside in a low-income area and earn no more than $34,000 annually for a single applicant.

Allocate Bandwidth With A Linksys

Users hogging your bandwidth will slow your connection speed to a crawl.

A Linksys router allocates an Internet connection among all the computers on your network, which allows each of the machines to access the Web and download files simultaneously. Sharing your connection may result in a serious loss of speed if some computers are using much more bandwidth, such as if they are frequently downloading large files. Any Linksys router with the Quality of Service (QOS) feature allows you to allocate the bandwidth so that no single computer is able to hog all the bandwidth available.

Instructions

1. Navigate your web browser to the address "http://192.168.1.1" to access the Linksys router's interface page. Type "Admin" in the "user name" field if you haven't previously changed the existing user name.

2. Leave the "password" field blank if you haven't previously changed the default password. Click "Log In."

3. Navigate to the "Applications & Gaming" tab at the top of the window. Click the "QoS" link in the menu beneath the "Applications & Gaming" heading.

4. Click the "Enable" radio button to turn on the Quality of Service feature. Click the specific port or service you want to change, such as "Port 1" for the computer connected to the Linksys router's first port, or "FTP" for any data transferred through an FTP service.

5. Click the "High Priority" radio button to give that port or service the most bandwidth. Choose "Medium Priority" or "Low Priority" to allocate less bandwidth to that port or service.

6. Repeat the process with any other ports or services. Click "Save Settings" to change the bandwidth allocations.

Repair Drafts On A Glass Sliding Door

Repairing drafts that enter your home through a sliding glass door will not only keep you warm during winter months, it will save money on your home energy bill. The most common causes of drafts are due to dirt, debris and damage to the areas surrounding the door. By performing yearly cleaning and inspections, you can easily prevent and repair any drafts. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Carefully remove the sliding glass door. This exposes the weather stripping, rollers and tracks and makes them easily accessible for cleaning, repair and removal.

2. Clean dirt from the rollers and tracks around the bottom of the sliding glass door. Accumulation of dirt and debris can cause breaks in the seal, allowing drafts to pass through. Inspect the rollers and tracks for signs of wear and breakage. Replace the components as needed.

3. Place a pry bar beneath the weather stripping and tap gently with a hammer to remove it from the edge of the sliding glass door. Repeat the process until all of it is removed. Save a sample to bring to the hardware store. This will ensure you purchase the same type and size product for replacement.

4. Measure the edge of the sliding glass door to determine the amount of weather stripping needed for replacement. When you are deciding which roll to buy, allow for excess material ensuring there will not be a break or seam in the seal, causing additional drafts to pass through the door.

5. Carefully replace the weather stripping in the same location as it was removed. Replaced material should not be cut anywhere other than the ends to ensure a tight seal. Also check to ensure there are no buckles or bubbles that may allow drafts to enter.

6. Re-hang the door and re-inspect all weather stripping, rollers and tracks. Check for drafts by holding your hand in the air near the seal. If additional drafts are felt, contact a professional because additional repairs or replacement may be needed.

Do Common Electrical Repairs

You can take care of your own minor electrical repairs by simply learning a few basic skills. Learning these common electrical skills can add up to savings for you, since you won't have to call an electrician for every little repair. Safety is the most important skill to learn and there are several ways you to safely prepare for common electrical repairs. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Familiarize yourself with general safety rules before starting any electrical repairs. Wear rubber-soled shoes and never touch conductive surfaces.

2. Disconnect the power to the area you are working on or shut off power to the entire house. You must ensure that there is no electrical current flowing to your work site.

3. Understand the wiring to an electrical box. There are three to six total wires, one or two are hot, one or two are neutral and one or two are grounds. An electrical box with only three wires is located at the end of the house electrical line.

4. Realize that the hot wires, which are generally black, feed power to the source. Neutral wires are white and attach to the same area as the ground, which is green. These colors are important and prevent wiring problems in your home.

Repair A Loud Muffler

Repair a Loud Muffler

Mufflers, or silencers, are part of your vehicles exhaust system. Tubular metal pipes carry exhaust gases from the engine away from the passenger area of the vehicle. Without some type of silencer, your vehicle would be extremely loud. Mufflers are mounted in-line with pipes and contain baffles that quiet the exhaust. Since mufflers are made from sheet metal, they will deteriorate and rust. Some mufflers may be repaired temporarily until they can be replaced.

Instructions

1. Chock the front wheels of the vehicle to prevent movement. Raise the rear of the vehicle with a floor jack and place jack stands under the rear frame rails just ahead of the rear wheels. Lower the jack and slide it from under the vehicle. Let the exhaust system cool down for at least one hour if the vehicle's engine has been run recently.

2. Slide under the vehicle. Check the muffler for any rust or holes. Know that sooty areas on the muffler or exhaust usually indicate where the leak is, as exhaust gases have been passing through this area.

3. Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from falling particles. Clean the rusted or damaged area of the muffler with a wire brush. Wipe dust and dirt from the area with a rag.

4. Wrap muffler patch tape around the muffler directly over the hole or damaged area. Make several passes around the muffler and overlap each pass approximately ½ inch. Cut the excess tape off with a pair of scissors. Smooth down the tape with your hand. The muffler patch tape will cure once the vehicle's exhaust system warms up to operating temperature. Follow subsequent steps if the muffler's inlet or outlet pipe is rusted or damaged.

5. Cut the top and bottom from the can with a can opener. The can's diameter should be slightly larger than the diameter of your muffler inlet or outlet pipe. Cut the can lengthwise from top to bottom with a pair of tin snips.

6. Apply an exhaust system sealer from a squeeze tube around the damaged area on the inlet or outlet pipe. Spread the can apart just enough so that it will slide over the pipe. Squeeze the can together with your hand. Slide a muffler clamp over the can that has the same diameter of the inlet or outlet pipe. Use two clamps on each end of the repair area, if desired. Tighten the nuts on the muffler clamps with an adjustable wrench in a clockwise direction.

7. Tie the muffler up if the mounting has rusted with metal wire or lengths of wire coat hanger. Loop the wire around the frame rail or a cross member. Do not wrap wire around axles, drive shafts or suspension components.

8. Raise the vehicle with the floor jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the jack. Drive the vehicle until it reaches operating temperature to cure the patch tape or sealer.

Set A Manufactured Home On A Permanent Foundation

A foundation serves as the base of a home. It prevents the home from sinking into the ground and keeps the home on a level base. Though manufactured homes are often considered to be mobile, it is possible to build them onto a permanent foundation. This is a large project, and will take at least a week to complete depending on the size of the home. Check with local building codes before starting the project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Creating the Foundation

1. Contact a local contractor and have them compact the area under the planned slabs to 1,000 pounds per square foot. This requires heavy machinery.

2. Lay one inch of gravel on top of the compacted area.

3. Mix mortar and water in a wheelbarrow based on the instructions on the mortar.

4. Place one inch of mortar on top of the gravel area.

5. Place the first cinderblock on top of the mortar. Ensure that the block is level.

6. Place mortar on the side of the first cinderblock.

7. Place the second cinderblock on the mortared side of the first cinderblock.

8. Continue this process until the first row has been completed. Ensure that the row is level.

9. Place an inch of mortar on top of the first row.

10. Start the second row of cinderblocks by placing the block halfway between two of the cinderblocks below it. The purpose is to stagger the blocks.

11. Continue this process until each of the footings has been completed.

12. Allow the footings to sit for at least seven days before placing the home.

13. Ensure that the footings elevate the home between 18 inches and 36 inches.

14. Create a slope of 6 inches per 10 feet away from the foundation for drainage purposes. The area needs to be 6 inches lower to allow for water to drain away from the house.

Placing the Home on the Foundation

15. Locate the I-beams on the bottom of the home. These will be long support beams along the bottom of the home.

16. Build up a cinderblock base under each of the I-beams. This will be a support base for the hydraulic jacks to sit on.

17.Place hydraulic jacks under each of the I-beams.

18. Slowly crank up the hydraulic jacks until there is enough space between the bottom of the home and the top of your foundation to slide in the capstones.

19. Slide the capstones into the slot under each of the I-beam support locations.

20. Lower the hydraulic jacks and remove the cinder block bases used to support them.

Grow Watermelons In Houston Texas

The first watermelon harvest on record was 5,000 years ago in Egypt.

According to the Watermelon.org, the United States ranks fourth in production of watermelons. Out of the 44 states that produce watermelons, Texas is one of only five states that consistently leads watermelon production in the U.S. There are four categories of watermelons: picnic, icebox, seedless and yellow flesh. No matter the variety you choose to grow -- in Texas everything is said to be bigger and better -- so your venture is sure to be a success. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Plant watermelon seeds at the last sign of winter; when there is no more chance of frost. Spring temperatures in Houston are the perfect growing weather for the watermelon plant, and the fruit that follows. Sow the seeds one inch deep with four to six seeds in a mound. Space the mounds six feet apart.

2. Water the plants regularly. Watermelons are 95 percent water; so they need watering more than most other plants. Avoid watering plants overhead, as that can result in mildew. Side dress the melons with compost or manure tea every two or three weeks.

3. Pinch out a plant, if one is growing early. You want to encourage the watermelon to set three or four fruits at a time. If a single plant is growing, it will suppress the other fruit.

4. Watch for aphids and cucumber beetles. Cucumber beetles transmit cucumber bacterial wilt. This will kill the plant, even before it bears fruit. Aphids can be hosed off the melons: While cucumber beetles will need to be hand-picked and destroyed.

5. Stop watering the melons a week before harvesting. The melons should be ready 65 to 90 days after sowing. The vine tendrils will turn brown and die off, showing you that the melon is ripe. You will also be able to hear a dull sound when you thump it.

Repair Broken Glass In A Doublehung Window

Replacing broken glass in a double-hung window is a simple job that requires no special tools or advanced home-repair shills. Glass in a double-hung window is typically held in place with small triangular steel glazier's points, installed every few inches along the perimeter of the pane. A bead of glazier's compound or putty covers the glazier's points and prevents air leaks around the glass. Once the broken glass, glazier's points and old putty are removed, installation of new glass typically takes under an hour. All necessary materials and supplies are available at your local glass-repair shop. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove and discard broken glass from the window frame. Use a putty knife to pry out loose chunks of putty. Hard-to-remove putty may have to be warmed and softened with a heat gun. Pry and scrape all of the putty from the window frame. Remove old glazier's points from the frame, using needle-nose pliers. Use a sash brush to dust debris from the window frame to prepare it to receive the new glass.

2. Roll pea-sized bits of putty and press them a few inches apart on the ledge of the window frame where the new glass will be installed. Position the new pane in the frame and press lightly near the perimeter of the glass. The bits of putty will temporarily hold the glass in place as you install the glazier's points.

3. Install one glazier's point every 4 or 5 inches along the edge of the glass. Hold the back of the point against the edge of the glass. Use a putty knife to push the point into the wooden frame, as far as it will go.

4. Roll a handful of putty into a long rope, about 1/2 inch in diameter. The exact diameter is unimportant as excess putty will later be removed. Gently press the putty rope into the crevice between the edge of the glass and the window frame. Continue to form a bead of putty all the way around the glass.

5. Rest the blade of the putty knife on the edge of the window frame at a 45-degree angle with the tip of the blade touching the glass. Draw the blade toward you, bevelling the bead of putty. Wipe excess putty from the knife. Repeat until the putty around the entire window is smoothed and bevelled. Once the putty has dried it may be painted to match the window frame.

Write A Hardship Letter For A Crisis Grant

Write a Hardship Letter For A Crisis Grant

A crisis grant, sometimes called a hardship grant is money given to individuals, families, or groups to help them in hard times. A crisis grant will not be granted to those who got in their situation because of bad choices, but only to those who had no control over the situation. For example, grants money may be given to pay for medical treatment, repair of housing after a natural disaster, help paying bills (must not be because money was spent unwisely), food, and emergency shelter.

Instructions

1. Start the hardship letter of in a formal manner. Put contact information on the top and address the recipient with Mr. or Mrs. It is best to contact the grant funding agency to find out who to address the letter too.

2. Describe you need of funding in a specific non technical why. If you need help paying your bills. Tell them what bills, how much they are individually, and why you are having trouble paying them.

3. Write in a emotional, personal manner. Avoid being demanding or to desperate.

4. Enclose copies of bills or other paper work that supports the need for a hardship grant. For example, you may need to attach bank statements, late notices on mortgage and car loans, previous year's tax returns, disability papers, unemployment paper work, and documents from the health department. Groups should also attach support letters.

5. Most importantly, while you must show a need you also must show the desire to help yourself. They do not want to fund a charity case, they want to help you help your self. So tell them what you are doing on your end.

6. End the letter with a thank you. Personally hand write your signature. If the hardship grant is for a group, the individuals that are in charge should sign.
