Repair Basement Seepage

Weeping walls render a basement uninhabitable, strip a home of valuable square footage and create a breeding ground for potentially harmful mold, mildew and fungus. Fortunately, you're not the first to battle basement seepage---a broad range of materials and methods offer a solution for every skill level and every budget. So, don't let weeping walls bring you to tears---get in there, get wet and get it done. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Fill small cracks and holes in the basement walls with modified crack filler.

2. Load a tube of crack filler into a caulking gun. Squirt crack filler into holes and across the length of cracks. Use a putty knife to spread and smooth the crack filler. Press the knife to the wall's surface to push crack filler into indentures.

3. Fill cracks larger than 1/8 inch with mortar. Combine mortar mix and water in a bucket and incorporate until blended. Scoop mortar mix from the bucket with a pointing trowel. Press the trowel against the wall, forcing the mortar mix into the crack. Spread and smooth the mortar mix by gently running the trowel along the crack.

4. Enlarge a large crack with a chisel. Hold a hammer in your dominant hand and place the chisel's point against the wall on either side of the crack. Position the chisel so that, when struck, it will chip away from the crack. Do not hold the chisel at a 90-degree angle to the wall and do not angle the chisel toward the crack. Angling the chisel toward the crack creates an undesirable "V" notch groove, while angling it away from the crack creates a desirable dovetail joint. Swing the hammer against the chisel's butt to chip out cement. Repeat along an entire side of the crack and then along the other.

5. Clear debris and dust from the joint, using a soft-bristled brush. Fill the enlarged joint with mortar mix. Smooth and press the mortar mix into place with a pointing trowel. Allow crack and hole repairs to dry until stiff.

6. Apply waterproofing compound to the basement's walls, using a stiff-bristled brush. Begin at the joint between wall and floor and work your way to the top of the wall. Wipe the compound across small areas of the wall's surface in a stiff, circular motion. Take your time and watch your work to ensure that you completely cover the wall and its joints. Allow the waterproofing compound to dry overnight.

7. Apply a second coat of waterproofing compound.

Create System Backup Disks

The number of DVDs required for a system backup will vary.

All editions of Windows 7 and most editions of Windows Vista feature built-in system backup and restore options. You may choose to backup your system on another hard disk, an external hard drive, a network drive or with DVDs. Once you create a system backup, you may use the disks to restore your computer if your operating system experiences catastrophic failure. If you run computers with Windows XP, Windows Vista Home Basic, or Windows Vista Home Premium, you must use a third-party tool to perform a full computer backup.

Instructions

1. Insert a blank DVD into your DVD burner. Label it as "Disk 1" with a soft-tipped permanent marker. Keep several blank DVDs ready to be swapped.

2. Click on "Start," then "Control Panel." Click on "Classic View" in the left column if applicable.

3. Double-click "Backup and Restore Center." Click on the "Backup the computer" button (Windows Vista) or the "System image backup" link in the left column (Windows 7).

4. Choose the DVD drive as the location where you wish to save the backup. Click "Next."

5. Select which disks you wish to include in the backup. Click on the box next to each drive to perform a full backup. Click "Next."

6. Click "Start backup." Swap discs if prompted by Windows, and label each new disc burned. Click "Close" once the backup has completed.

Find Someone Who Can Repair Your Stereo Speakers

If your home stereo speakers are old, rare or very expensive, finding someone to repair them can be a challenge.

Instructions

1. Look on the back of the speakers to determine their manufacturer, model name, serial number and power specifications. Most repair shops need this kind of information to determine if they can fix a set of speakers.

2. Look in the audio and electronics sections of your local phone book for shops that offer repair services.

3. If you can't find a local service in the phone book, search for your speaker manufacturer on the Internet and see if they have a service phone number you can call. If so, ask them to recommend a repair shop near you.

4. You may also be able to find an online service that does repairs, or one that helps customers find places that repair specific speaker brands.

5. If you have exhausted all your resources and still can't find someone to repair your speakers, you may have to do it yourself. Many Web sites offer how-to guides on speaker repair, or sell parts and accessories.

Repair A Craftsman 139 53778

The Craftsman 139.53778 garage door opener transmitter can replace the original transmitter that came with the 53000 or 53000SR garage door opener. If the Craftsman 139.53778 stops operating your garage door opener, you need to repair the connection between the transmitter and the motor control unit. Released in 1990, the Craftsman 139.53778 is not as advanced as modern garage door transmitters, and repairing the connection requires a different approach than you would take with newer transmitters. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Transmitter Code Switches

1. Slide the battery cover off of the back of the Craftsman 139.53778 garage door transmitter to access the control switches. You will find nine switches labeled 1-9.

2. Remove the battery cover from your garage door transmitter. Depending on the model of your current transmitter, you may not find the control switches in the battery compartment. If necessary, take apart the transmitter housing to access the control switches.

3. Move the control switches in the Craftsman 139.53778 transmitter so that they match the switches in your original transmitter. By matching the switches you can control the garage door opener.

Coding 53000 Series Opener

4. Climb a ladder to reach the control switches on the 53000 garage door motor unit. The control switches on the garage door motor unit are labeled 1-9 like the switches in the Craftsman 139.53778 transmitter.

5. Move switches 2-9 on the motor unit so that they match the position of the switches in the transmitter. Placing the switches in any other position will prevent the motor unit from connecting with the transmitter.

6. Determine which of the three buttons you want to control the garage door opener and move the 1 switch to one of the following positions: "+" if you want to use the largest button; "0" if you want to use the middle button; and "-" if you want to use the other smaller button.

7. Repeat Steps 1-3 if you have additional motor control units in your garage. Set the 1 switch to one of the two remaining buttons to prevent opening more than one door at a time when pressing a button.

Coding 53000SR Opener

8. Climb a ladder to reach the 53000SR garage door motor unit control panel. You will see a button labeled "SR" and an indicator light to the right of the button.

9. Press the "SR" button to place the 53000SR in programming mode. The indicator light will turn on.

10. Push one of the buttons on the Craftsman 139.53778 transmitter within 30 seconds to program that button to control the motor control unit. The indicator light will turn off and the garage door will open or close, depending on the original position of the door when you started programming. If you do not press a button on the transmitter before 30 seconds have passed, the indicator light will turn off and you will have to press the "SR" button again.

11. Repeat Steps 1-3 to program any additional garage door motor unit in your garage, using a different button to operate the motor unit.

Stop Squirrels From Gnawing On A Log Home

Make a homemade repellent to stop squirrels from gnawing on a log home.

Squirrels are commonly found in the yards and property around many homes. Many people enjoy watching the daily activities of a squirrel as it nests or prepares for winter. However, when a squirrel becomes interested in a possible source of food, its antics can turn damaging. Squirrels have sharp teeth that are well suited for gnawing wood. A log home can quickly become damaged unless steps are taken to stop the squirrels. Make a homemade repellent to discourage squirrels from damaging a log home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the top from a 1-gallon spray container.

2. Pour 6 oz., or one small bottle, of hot sauce into the spray container.

3. Pour 1/2 gallon of water into the container with the hot sauce. Add 1 tsp. of liquid dish detergent to the container. Place the lid on the container and shake to mix the ingredients.

4. Slowly remove the lid from the spray container and pour in another 1/2 gallon of water. Place the lid on the container and shake again to completely mix.

5. Spray along the ground around the log home as well as areas of wood on which the squirrel has gnawed. Adjust the spray nozzle on the spray container to a fine mist and coat the area with the repellent.

Seal A Leaky Mobile Home Roof

Mobile home roofs are subject to leaks that can cause interior water damage .

Mobile homes roofs are constructed of many pieces of metal that are attached, or "mated," to each other at roofing seams. Leaks generally occur at the seams and areas around protruding plumbing vent pipes, and need to be repaired quickly to avoid damage to the interior of the home. If you have to seal a leaking mobile home roof, schedule the task for a dry, sunny day with no wet weather in the forecast. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Access the roof with a ladder. Lay a 2-foot-by-4-foot piece of 3/4-inch plywood lengthwise across the roof surface. Use the plywood as a stepping platform for cleaning and repairing the roof.

2. Clean the roof of all foreign debris with the broom. If areas are damp under thick piles of debris, allow the metal roof to thoroughly dry before proceeding.

3. Seal the roofing seams and all joints around protruding plumbing pipes with a roofing caulk or asphalt patch material. Follow the manufacturer's label directions on the package. Ensure that the material is completely cured before applying the aluminum-base roof coating.

4. Apply the aluminum-base roof coating over the seams that have been previously sealed with the caulk or asphalt patch material. Roll the sealing material in a thick coating. Allow the roof coating to thoroughly cure.

5. Cover the entire roof surface with an application of roof sealant designed for metal material. There are many types on the market, from asphalt-base to a white rubber-type polymer. Follow the labeling directions for application rates and drying times. In most cases, these products will have a useful life of up to 10 years.

Consequences If You Don'T Repair A Foundation Shift

Most home foundations will experience some degree of shifting with age.

A shifting foundation is something most homes will experience as they age. There are several reasons for a shifting foundation, and some are more difficult or costly to fix than others. Water pressure is among the most common causes, particularly in cold regions with freeze and thaw cycles. Whatever the cause of the shift, it must be addressed as soon as possible to prevent serious, often costly, consequences. Does this Spark an idea?

Causes of Shifting

Among the most common causes of foundation problems is related to soil moisture. It is essential that the soil surrounding the foundation is kept evenly moist and has proper drainage. Tree roots are also a serious issue, and occasionally require root barriers to prevent problems. If a problem with the foundation is left unchecked, the severity of the damage will increase dramatically -- along with the cost of repairs and the time it takes to complete them. It is essential to thoroughly inspect a foundation prior to purchasing a home and run routine checks for cracks and other signs of foundation trouble. The sooner the problem is addressed, the easier it is to fix.

Flooring Problems

Uneven flooring is among the first symptoms of a foundation problem. It often starts small and gets worse with time. Flooring issues will appear in several ways, usually starting with cracks and pops before progressing to sagging as much as a few inches. In these later stages repairs become critical and often costly. A professional is usually required to fix the foundation, plus the floor must usually be pulled up and replaced.

Door and Window Problems

Most homes will experience some difficulty with doors and windows, particularly in areas with high humidity. Look for doors or windows that stick, don't latch or won't stay closed. If left unchecked, the doors, windows and frames will need to be replaced.

Cracks

Most concrete foundations will experience some minor cracks that will not affect the home's structural integrity. As the foundation shifts, these cracks become larger and deeper, and will eventually be large enough to permit water into the home. Cracks that are 1/16 inch or less are treated with a thorough coat of concrete waterproofing paint, which costs approximately $25 per gallon, according to houselogic.com. If the crack returns, it is usually indicative of excessive water pressure on the foundation. Stairstep cracks, bulging or cracks more than 1/4-inch wide must be dealt with immediately.

Home Repair Help For The Elderly

When it comes to home repairs, making sure to work with a reputable builder and understanding all of the ins and outs of each component of the job can be a challenge. However, for elderly people, the difficulty of supervising home repairs is more difficult, particularly if they face mental or physical limits. Attaining home repair help for the elderly is important to ensure that any jobs completed on the home are done properly. Does this Spark an idea?

Community Agencies

In most towns, elderly residents can go through their local government agency on aging and find reputable repairmen or remodelers that specialize in working with elderly consumers. This is especially so in towns that are focusing on elder-ready initiatives, which are in place to make communities around the country as elder-friendly as possible. Local senior and community centers also generally have home repair resources in place for elderly people in need of home repair, including programs that help to finance such projects. Start by calling your local city or county government or the nearest senior center to get information about programs in place for elderly residents engaging in home repairs. Most locales have a program in place, like the Emergency Home Repair Assistance Program for the Elderly available in Concord, California or the Home Repair for the Elderly Program available in Fairfax, Virginia.

Family and Friends

For those that don't have local resources in place, it's best to rely on family and friends to help complete large-scale home repair jobs. If you don't have someone in your inner circle that can actually help to make the repairs, then consider having someone you trust go through the process of hiring a home repair professional. Since there are many people that will take advantage of elderly consumers, having someone with you during the hiring process will ensure that you do not fall victim to such unscrupulous business practices.

Do-It-Yourself

For elderly residents still physically able, there are some repairs, like repairing tile or replacing a broken appliance, which can be a do-it-yourself project. However, use instructional materials throughout the process to be sure it is getting done properly and consider having a home repair professional look over your work to ensure it was done right. There are a number of books on the market that are marketed towards do-it-yourself home repairs and often provide step-by-step instructions and pictorials to assist in the process.

Facts About House Fires

House fires lead the nation in loss of life, property and monetary damages. Psychological damages, medical care, temporary housing, loss of pets, disfigurement and lost income result in a far higher cost than is reflected by property alone. The saddest fact of all is that nearly all house fires are preventable with fire and smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, fire escape plans and education. Does this Spark an idea?

Geography

Six states lead the nation in the highest incidence of fire deaths with 25 deaths per million people per year. These are Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West VIrginia and Washington, DC. Fifteen states that are mostly in the Southeast have 14 to 25 deaths per million and 28 states are at 13 per million or below. Although outdoor fires make up 38 percent of total fires, these don't generally cause much damage or loss of life. One fifth of all fires responded to are vehicular fires. House fires are three times more prevalent than fires in other types of buildings due to the greater adherence to fire safety measures that public buildings must employ. Just three percent of deaths from fire occur in public buildings, while 76 percent occur in one- and two-family dwellings.

Types

The leading cause of residential fires is not smoking, as many believe, but cooking. Cooking accounts for 28 percent of all fires. Twenty-one percent of fires are caused deliberately by arson. The types of fire responsible for the most civilian fatalities are arson, which accounts for 28 percent of deaths by fire, and smoking, which causes 18 percent of deaths by fire. Candles, fireplaces and other open flames are also responsible for 18 percent of all fire fatalities. Arson is responsible for 17 percent of all deaths in fires. Smoke, rather than fire's flames, is responsible for 75 percent of all deaths by fire.

Identification

Fires deaths and losses can be broken down by age, race, gender, geography, socio-economic class and population. African-Americans have a much higher and disproportionate share of fire fatalities, accounting for 24 percent of all fire deaths. This is attributable to the fact that many more African Americans live in poverty and older homes than do other races. About twice as many men as women die in fires. Although the reasons for this statistic are not fully known, it is thought that the higher incidence of alcoholism among men, and the prevalence of industrial fire deaths have a strong influence on these figures. The rate of fire deaths in women jumps up to 28 percent for females over the age of 75. Arson and fires with unknown cause led to the highest death rate in 2004, and smoking followed closely with the second highest rate of fatalities. People who have physical or cognitive limitations, as well as older adults and children, are at a higher risk of death by fire than other groups are. Combined, these groups accounted for fully 46 percent of all fire fatalities in 2004 and approximately 22 percent of all fire injuries.

Expert Insight

The numbers for fire-related deaths and injuries, and even property losses, have been on a downward curve for many years now on a per capita basis. The greatest factor in this trend is thought to be smoke alarms, which are used in a higher percentage of homes each year. Sprinkler systems, especially in commercial buildings and apartments, have also helped. Other factors are higher fire code standards, better construction materials that have been created for fire protection, better community education and the higher standards of firefighter training and equipment used. The rate of arson in the US is staggering when compared to other countries as well, probably due in part to the many set for insurance payouts. Although deaths by fire have decreased significantly, there is still a two and a half times higher ratio compared to that of other industrialized nations. Switzerland, who has the lowest incidence of death by fire, has a rate of only 5.6 per million population as opposed to the United States' highest national rate of 17.1 percent per million.

Warning

The United States, despite all of the progress seen, still leads the industrialized world in fire incidence, damages and loss of lives. The areas of most concern are the high risk of the very young and the elderly (whose population is rising as the Baby Boomers reach retirement age). Particular ethnic groups, including African Americans and American Indians, have a much higher rate of deaths and injuries by fire than does the rest of the population. The fact that individual states have made remarkable changes in their fire statistics shows that fire prevention is possible and that all states should follow suit. Rhode Island, the smallest state, had the highest rate of fire fatalities in 2003 and the lowest in 2004. Delaware, on the other hand, had the lowest rate of fire deaths in 2000 to one of the highest in 2001. Fire prevention is something that requires ongoing efforts and vigilance in education and the implementation and adherence to fire safety codes. The southeast has the highest incidence of death fatalities from fire and has held that sad distinction for many years. Generally states that are grouped together have similar numbers.

Prevention/Solution

The key to prevention is education and public awareness. Smoke detectors should be installed on every floor of your home and particular attention should be paid to bedroom areas. Test smoke detectors monthly, keep them clean and replace their batteries yearly. Fire extinguishers need to be put into the kitchen, workshop and garage and an ABC type which is good for all types of fire is recommended. Know use fire extinguishers before there's a fire and only use these on small fires. If a fire is large, just leave the house and call 911. Many, many deaths occur because people choose to stay inside to try and fight fires. For more information on preventing fires, use the URLs below.

Effects

The total estimated cost of fire to our society is a nearly unimaginable 165 billion dollars per year. This figure includes the cost of paid fire departments, the costs incurred for volunteer fire departments, the cost of losses, injuries, and insurance as well as the cost of fire protection added to existing and new structures. Economically, the costs of fire has a huge impact on our nation and the implications of reducing these numbers would have far reaching and positive implications.

California'S Bed Bug Laws And Tenant Rights

Bed bugs are small oval-shaped insects that frequently hide in mattresses.

Cimex lectularius, or the common bed bugs, feed on the blood of mammals and are adapted to living with humans, according to the University of Kentucky. These pesky insects are the source of physical discomfort, restless nights and can become a financial burden. They appear in a number of places, including hotels, college dorms and the average home or rental property despite cleanliness. California enforces an "implied warranty of habitability," which addresses residential vermin.

Bed Bug Infestations

Bed bugs have a knack for tucking their brownish, flat, oval-shaped bodies into the most obscure places and are often mistaken for ticks. Their size and ability to successfully hide contribute to the difficulty in controlling them. Signs of bed bugs include dried excrement that appears as a reddish or brown stain on mattresses and box springs and blood smears on bed sheets according to the University of Kentucky. A moderate to heavy infestation encourages them to spread out at which time they can be found anywhere in the home. These small insects hide during the day and feed on their hosts at night. Itchy welts, bumps or bites that appear after sleeping are a sign of an infestation. Though they may not transfer disease and the physical effect is minimal, bed bugs can cause insomnia due to the fear of being bitten at night.

The Cost of Bed Bug Removal

The eradication of bed bugs requires diligence, persistence and patience. It may also require a large sum of money. A typical family may spend up to $5,000 on inspections, storage fees and exterminators, and owners of large rental properties can spend up to $80,000 according to "The New York Times." As a result, tenants and landlords may tussle over the responsibility for the appearance of the bugs. This is where California's "implied warranty of habitability" addresses the very basic requirements for a suitable resolution.

Implied Warranty of Habitability

The California Supreme Court case Green v. Superior Court set the standard for California's habitability law. Under this law, a unit must provide "clean and sanitary buildings, grounds, and appurtenances (for example, a garden or a detached garage), free from debris, filth, rubbish, garbage, rodents, and vermin," states the California Department of Consumer Affairs. The "implied warranty of habitability," established in the case makes a landlord responsible for the repair of serious defects that affect habitability. Tenants who suspect bed bugs or other vermin have legal rights and must complete a process to resolve the issue.

Repair and Deduct

In California, tenants have the right to live in a habitable unit, but they must meet their own responsibilities. Keeping the unit clean and free from debris are important even though bed bugs appear in the cleanest of homes. Under California Civil Code Section 1942, tenants can repair and deduct from the rent. In order to repair and deduct, the tenant must notify the landlord in writing of the issue, wait a reasonable period and hire a qualified professional. The reasonable period is 30 days unless the issue is severe. The total expenditure cannot exceed one month's rent, however the option is available twice in a 12-month period. Essentially, the tenant can repair and deduct up to two months of rent in a 12-month period.

Vacate Immediately

Tenants also can move out of the unit immediately without notice. The tenant should still request the landlord eradicate the insects immediately, take pictures of the infestation, provide a letter stating they are vacating under Civil Code Section 1942 and request a final walkthrough. Prior to immediately vacating, consulting an attorney can provide valuable insight into the results of a possible legal battle for property abandonment.

Repair A Water Line

Sometimes you may have to replace a peice of water line due to damage or corrosion Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. First turn off the water at the meter. open a few faucets at the highest level of home this will release the vacuum that is caused by a closed system. Loosen the nut on the water meter and place a bucket under meter to catch water.

2. Cut the piece of pipe to the desired length that is needed for repair. Clean the outside of the ends approximately 1/2 inch in from the cut ends. cut the new piece of pipe approve 1/8 inch smaller than the opening of the repair. Clean both ends of the piece you are installing. do not touch the ends that you cleaned it will make the solder repel from the joint! Now clean the insides of the couplings again do not let your bare fingers touch the cleaned parts.

3. Apply a liberal mount of flux to all cleaned areas where you will be soldering. Install new pipe. heat the area of the pipe close to fitting and wipe excess flux while pipe is hot. continue heating pipe now place solder against the fitting and watch it flow all the way around the pipe and fitting. remove flame from pipe and wipe all around the newly soldered fitting this will give you a professional looking result. Be very careful not to get burnt this pipe will stay very hot for a while as the flame you just used is 1400 degrees f.

4. You now will tighten up the meter nut shut all the opened faucets and gradually turn the water back on. make sure to check for leaks, Now return back to the faucets remove the aerators( the screens that are on the ends of the spout) and run the faucet to remove all sediment, This may be a good time to replace those old aerators there is air in the line so the faucet will most likely spit at you this will clear out very shortly and you'll only have to do this once.

5. As a tip for those of you having a problem trying to get a pipe soldered that has a tiny bit of water that just wont come out> you can roll up a small piece of American bread and stuff it into the pipe this willsoak up the water allowing you to make your connection. Don't worry about the bread getting stuck it will disintegrate once you turn the water on. Just remember to remove the aerators at the closest faucet

Remove Mold From The Detergent Area Of A Front Loading Washer

Remove Mold From the Detergent Area of a Front Loading Washer

Your new, high-efficiency front-loading washer may be hiding a dirty secret: mold and mildew. A Consumer Reports survey found mold and mildew caused 8 percent of front-loading washer problems. Many new washers have this unexpected mold problem, but it can be solved, and prevented, in a few steps.

Front-loading washers use a tumbling action through multiple cleaning and rinse cycles using specially formulated high-efficiency detergent. After multiple cycles, the washer may not drain completely, or a closed washer door can trap excess water in the gasket folds, especially if the consumer is not using the proper HE detergent. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Check for Mold

1. Mix a bleach solution of 3/4 cup bleach to one gallon of water in a bucket. Wet the sponge in the solution, then squeeze dry and set aside.

2. Look for any moisture or standing water at the bottom of the front loader. Use a towel to sop up excess moisture, then wipe the area with the sponge rinsed in the bleach solution.

3. Check under and around the door gasket for actual mold or detergent residue buildup or slime.

Clean and Disinfect

4. Wipe the door gasket, including the folds, with a sponge rinsed in soapy water, then dry the seals well with a clean towel.

5. Use a cleaner like Smelly Washer or Affresh brand washing machine cleaners according to package instructions to clean any unseen or missed mold or mildew.

6. Leave the washer door open for a couple hours after cleaning to thoroughly dry the interior before the next wash.

7. Call the manufacturer or bring your washer in for service if none of these steps prevents mold and mildew in your front-loading washer.

Diy Stucco Repair

Stucco is one of the original materials used to cover houses. Originally, the material was made purely from dirt, but now it is made from much stronger materials. Since stucco is applied as one large piece, when a crack or other damage appears on the wall it can mess up the finish on a much larger piece of the wall. However, stucco can be repaired with a few simple tools and tricks. Does this Spark an idea?

Materials

Stucco repair requires several tools and supplies. Eye protection is essential during the first stages of repair. A hammer and chisel can be used to break off any loose stucco. Mesh and metal clippers are used to cover the newly exposed area. Of course, if the area is just a crack, mesh is not necessary. Enough stucco should be purchased to cover all cracks and missing segments around the house. Stucco can be purchased at most home supply stores. Use a trowel to apply the stucco. A wheelbarrow and shovel make a great place to hold the stucco mixture. Use the shovel to mix the stucco.

Process

Use a hammer and chisel to eliminate the loose stucco around the crack or missing piece. Take away all stucco until it stops coming away easily. Clean the area with a damp cloth. If the stucco was removed to the bottom slats or siding, place a mesh metal piece over the area with roofing nails to give the stucco something more to hold onto. Apply three coats of stucco, 3/8 inches thick each. Let each coat dry before applying the next coat. It should take about 24 hours for a coat to dry. Blend the last coat into the stucco that is already present on the walls. Dampen the edges of the old stucco to create a firmer bond. Apply a finish if the original stucco is not smooth. Usually, flicking some remaining stucco over the new segment will help blend it in with the old piece.

Tips and Tricks

Apply builder's paper under the mesh piece to provide additional weatherproofing to the walls. Attach with roofing nails. An acrylic bonding agent mixed in with the stucco will. help prevent future cracks and damages to the walls. The best way to get the coats to stick on top of each other is to score the coat while still somewhat wet with a trowel or stick before applying the next coat. For small cracks in the surface of a stucco wall, caulk can be applied into the crack to help prevent the crack from widening.

About The Values Of Antique Treadle Sewing Machines

There are several categories for treadle sewing machines, and their values vary greatly. Antique treadle sewing machines are very popular for collectors of Singer products, and Singer offers a range of treadle machines that vary from industrial to child-sized machines. There are several ways to determine the value of an antique treadle machine, and a number of websites can help determine what the machine is worth. Does this Spark an idea?

History

The history of treadle sewing machines is rich. The treadle machine is the most important machine in sewing today, and newer machines can cost thousands of dollars. Singer made the first industrialized treadle machines over 100 years ago, but the first sewing machine to ever receive a patent was a British creation given to a German business man, Charles Wiesenthal. However the patent was actually missing the plans for the machine, and only included the patent for a needle for the machine. A patent was later given to an English man named Thomas Saint, and he is credited with having made the first treadle machine.

Function

The treadle sewing machine's changed sewing forever, after thousands of years of people only sewing by hand. The industrial era in terms of sewing was established after the Englishman, Thomas Saint made his working prototype of the very first patented treadle sewing machine. After that, the business of treadle machines flourished substantially, and hand sewing was decreased.

Types

There are different types and brands of antique treadle sewing machines. The first and most successful commercially industrialized machine was created by Isaac Singer, and these early machines are the ones that are worth the most money today. Later on other companies began to copy the Singer treadle machine, causing the sewing machine industry to explode, however the only antique machines that carry a monetary value are Singer and Howe. Singer machines are the only ones that are easily found in America. Howe machines are often found, but in such poor shape that they have no value.

Identification

Identifying the value of antique treadle machines can be extremely complicated. You must first learn to identify the types of antique machines. Singer machines of all types, were always manufactured in metal. The machines were all well made and extremely durable. Singer machines were almost always black with gold lettering or designs on them. Singer machines always move up and down, whereas other machines' needles would move side to side.

Determining Value

Determining the value takes a lot of research and practice. It is best to always check antique shops, magazines, or online websites to determine if the machine is of value. The best rule of thumb is to always check for serial numbers, brand names, color, and designs on the machine. Gather this information, and then do a general search to determine the monetary value.

Considerations

Treadle machines, in order for them to be of any value, need to be of authentic type. It has to have the right appearance, the correct needle function (straight up and down), correct color, lettering, and serial numbers. Condition of machine isn't as important as the brand, and years of the machine. Parts are easily found for all Singer treadle machine regardless of age, which increases the monetary value.

Expert Insight

The Singer Company has information regarding all industrialized sewing machines, and can help determine the value of any Singer treadle sewing machine. There are also many different websites where you can find information helpful in determining the value of a machine, and refurbish Singer machines.

Repair A Loose Handrail

Repair loose handrails

Handrails routinely come loose because of the weight they bear, especially in high-traffic staircases. If you have a wall-mounted handrail, repairing it is as easy as tightening the screws that attach it to the wall. If your handrail is secured through newels (vertical posts that support a handrail), it will take a little more work to get it tightened up. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Shake the individual newels (handrail posts) of your handrail to locate the problem.

2. Remove the flooring or work through the ceiling to get to the newel's anchoring point (if you cannot already see it).

3. Make sure the newels are vertical. Insert a lag bolt (16-inches long by 1/2 inch in diameter) a minimum of 8 inches into each newel from below. Insert the bolt through the solid blocking attached to the floor joists and directly into the center of the newel's dowel pin.

4. Test the rigidity of the newel by shaking it.

Bang Out A Dent

A small body hammer is used to bang out a dent.

Dents can be costly to repair at a collision center. There are ways to repair them yourself, but most involve using a dent puller, which puts holes in the sheet metal. Banging out a dent is simple and effective. You can bang out a dent with two very simple tools. Learn bang out a dent, and save money.

Instructions

1. Use a body hammer to lightly tap around the outer edges of the dent. There is a ridge around the dent that is higher than the surface of the car. You'll need to tape this area again later, but try to get it slightly lower than the surrounding surface of the car.

2. Find a way to reach the other side of the dent. This may require opening the hood or trunk, or removing the lining under the wheel well to reach a fender. For dented doors, the interior door panel can be removed to reach the back side of the door. For a few areas, the other side is not accessible, and the dent can't be banged out with a hammer.

3. Place a metal dolly on the dented side of the metal. Use the body hammer on the other side to bang on the dent. The dolly, which is a block of metal shaped like a bar of soap, keeps the hammer banging on a flat surface. This stops the hammer from making any sharp indentations in the metal, which are difficult to repair.

4. Move the dolly and hammer around on the dent, banging the dent from both sides, until it is smooth. Most dents that can be reached from both sides can be banged out completely.

Repair The Exhaust On A Dirt Bike

Dirt bike exhausts are vulnerable to damage.

Dirt bike exhausts are designed to withstand minor spills or collisions. The unexpected can happen in the dirt, and the result could be a damaged or leaky exhaust system. Exhaust pipes are made from metal alloy that's relatively easy to repair. Damaged or brittle manifold gaskets are replaced during the repair. Bent or broken manifold studs can be removed and replaced. The end product is an inexpensive home workshop repair.

Instructions

1. Allow the dirt bike and exhaust system to cool down completely. Use a socket and ratchet to remove the exhaust manifold nuts. Use an open-ended wrench to remove the bolts that hold the upper end of the exhaust pipe to the catalytic converter. Ease the exhaust pipe forward, away from the engine and out of the frame to remove it from the bike.

2. Place the exhaust on a workbench. Sand the area of repair with coarse sandpaper. For large dents, use an electric drill with a 1/16-inch drill bit and drill several holes near the center of the dent. Put flat washers on self-tapping screws and drive the screws about half way into the holes with a screwdriver. Attach the teeth of a dent puller under a flat washer and tighten the tool. Alternate screws to pull the dent out in stages.

3. Use a flat file to smooth the drilled penetrations. Complete prepping the area with sandpaper. Wipe the excess debris away with a rag.

4. Mix a batch of epoxy metal patch according to the instructions. Use a putty knife to apply the epoxy to the damaged section. Allow the patch to dry overnight. Sand the area smooth and paint it with high-heat paint.

5. Repair a broken manifold stud by drilling a 1/8-inch hole in the end of the broken stud. Insert an easy-out tap in the hole. Use an adjustable wrench to turn the tap counterclockwise and remove the broken stud.

6. Thread the nut on a new manifold stud and tighten it to the shoulder on the bolt. Thread the other end of the stud into the manifold and tighten it using an open-ended wrench on the nut. Remove the nut from the stud.

7. Install a new manifold gasket into the flange on the exhaust pipe. Insert the exhaust from the front of the bike. Align the upper end of the exhaust pipe with the catalytic converter, and push the front of the exhaust onto the manifold studs. Tighten the manifold nuts and reattach the catalytic converter.

Fix A Broken Lcd Tv

Small scratches can be fixed at home.

An LCD TV is a television that uses a liquid crystal display to enable viewers to see a bright, clear image full of vibrant colors. LCD televisions are traditionally flat screen, which allows them to cut down on glare and enables a user to place them in many locations. LCD TVs can be expensive, which is why many people choose to try to fix any problems themselves before calling in the experts.

Instructions

1. Check all of the connecting wires and make sure they're fully inserted into the right slots. If one of your high-definition wires is placed into the wrong slot, your LCD TV will display a blank screen. Also check to make sure that you do actually have power going to your LCD.

2. Check the sleep-timer function on your LCD if it keeps turning off. A sleep-timer is used to turn a television set off after a certain period of time has elapsed. If the sleep-timer is not turned off, your LCD television will continue to turn itself off after a certain period of time.

3. Repair scratches by cleaning the screen with a dry, lint-free rag, then using a cotton ball to dab petroleum jelly onto the scratch. Gently rub the petroleum jelly into the scratch, then use another cotton ball to remove any residue. Do not remove the petroleum jelly that is in the scratch.

4. Replace the backlight if your LCD television is producing a dim picture, even when brightness is at 100 percent in the settings. Consult your manufacturer's manual in order to determine if you can replace the backlight yourself or if you need a professional to do it for you.

Remove Basement Mold

moldy basement walls

The good news about basement mold is that it's harmful to mice, roaches, and spiders that want to make a home at the bottom of your home. The bad news is that it's also harmful to humans! In fact, mold is one of the main causes of indoor allergies, and basements in particular are prime ground for mold and mildew to thrive.

If you've noticed a musty smell in the basement and have had headaches more frequently, you likely have a mold problem. Here are steps you can take to remove basement mold. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Know what mold and mildew look like and what they thrive on. Typically, basement mold and mildew occur as black, white, or bluish spots; they may be fuzzy or look raised. Mold growth will occur on any organic or porous material (paint, cardboard, newspapers, wood, textiles, carpet) that is exposed to moisture. Mold can even grow in fiberglass insulation.

2. Remove what you can from the basement--that includes boxes, furniture, rugs, anything wooden. Check furniture for signs of mold and decide if you want to clean it, or discard it. If you have metal tool boxes, these are probably safe from mold and you can leave them in the basement while you clean.

If you have mold growing on wooden studs and rafters where you have exposed insulation, discard the insulation and replace it with new isulation when you have finished cleaning.

3. Once you have the basement free of clutter and things that mold will grow on, look around for leaking pipes, or cracks in the walls where rain and ground water can seep in. Fix all the leaks, and don't forget to check window seals. One clue that you have basement leakage is any large water stain.

4. After you have repaired the walls and pipes to prevent moisture, apply the basement mold remover to the walls and floors. Clean all surfaces, even if you don't see obvious sings of mold growth. You can use an industrial fungicide, or hot soapy water. For carpets, decide if you want to tear it out, or clean it with a steamer and mold remover.

Always wear protective gear including a mask when cleaning mold!

5. After you have washed the moldy walls and floors, dry the surfaces with a clean towel and let the dehumidifier run. Only when the basement is completely dry should you repaint anything.

6. Refurnish the basement, taking care not to reintroduce anything that has mold or mildew growing on it. Replace the insulation if needed.

7. To prevent further mold growth, use the dehumidifier frequently and be watchful of leaks and places where moisture can enter the basement.

Remove A Windstar Sliding Door Panel

The Ford Windstar sliding door panel is much easier to remove than the front door panels. While the front door panels have electronic components, multiple screws and panels to remove, the sliding door panel is held on only by clips. You must remove the interior door handle before removing the door panel.

Instructions

1. Sit down in the back seat and close the sliding door. Position a small towel between the door handle and the door panel.

2. Move the towel in a back-and-forth fashion to pop off the C-clip that holds the handle in place. Pick up the clip when it comes off; you'll need to reinstall the handle.

3. Pull the handle away from its mount. You may have to wiggle it back and forth to get it off.

4. Remove the door handle surround panel. It is attached by plastic clips; pry it off with a small flat-head screwdriver.

5. Get out of the van, and open the sliding door from the outside. You must open the door so you can fully grasp the panel.

6. Grab the panel at each bottom corner; pull it away from the door to disengage the clips. Push the door panel up, then pull it away from the door.

Change The Oil On A Sears Lawn Mower

Sears manufactures and sells a variety of lawn mowers, including Yard-man mowers and its own signature brand, Craftsman. Sears provides a set of maintenance instructions for changing the oil in the lawn mower, recommending that the oil be changed after every 25 hours of use or at least once every year. Although these instructions apply to a Sears Craftsman mower, the step-by-step details can be applied to many other lawn mower brands. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Change the Oil in a Sears Lawnmower

1. Empty the fuel tank completely before changing the oil by running the lawn mower until the tank is empty. Locate the spark plug wire, and disconnect it from the spark plug. Move it to a position where it will not touch the spark plug.

2. Test the oil cap to make sure it is not hot to the touch. When cooled, remove the oil cap, and place it aside.

3. Drain the oil into a safe container by tipping the lawn mower on its side with the oil reservoir closest to the container to prevent excess spillage. After draining, rock the lawn mower slightly from side to side to release any excess oil in the reservoir.

4. Place the lawn mower back into an upright position on a flat surface. Clean off any spilled oil from the lawn mower with a clean cloth before adding the new oil.

5. Pour the new bottle of oil into the reservoir for the oil-fill spout, stopping periodically to check the oil level. Sears recommends checking the oil every few ounces then checking the level with the dipstick. When the oil level hits the level marked "full," allow the oil to settle.

6. Continue to add oil in small increments after the oil has settled until it once again reaches the "full" mark. Replace the oil dipstick and cap before resuming use of the lawn mower.

7. Reconnect the disconnected spark plug wire to the spark plug after replacing the cap.

Disabled Veterans Small Business Grants

Disabled veterans may choose from a number of industry-specific small business grants.

If you are a disabled veteran in or starting a small business you should be aware that you will have to be creative in locating grants. An abundance of websites will promise you that there are a plethora of federal, state and other grant opportunities, but most of these sites will guide you toward loan applications or other business ventures that you will be required to pay for. Therefore, focus your grant search in areas where you have expertise, that require minimal changes to your company that will qualify you for a grant, or specific populations that you may serve.

Federal Grants

Contrary to popular belief, the Dallas Public Library assures patrons that there is no federal grant in existence for just opening a small business, whether the individual is a disabled veteran or not. Currently there is one federal grant that specifically is for the training and entrepreneurial endeavors of disabled veterans, but that grant is awarded annually to the Small Business Administration to provide training to veterans. However, grants are available for specific businesses within certain areas of industry from the federal government, provided that you meet the criteria of the grant. An example of this would be federal grants for child care centers, which are offered in regard to construction, nutrition or providing specific services to high risk groups.

Technology Grants

CNN Money indicates that there are more grants for small businesses that are related to the technology field than are found for most other types of businesses. These grants, however, are not exclusively for disabled veterans, but provided to any company that meets the grant qualifications. Some of the companies providing these grants include TechColumbus, Ben Franklin Partnership and the Maine Technology Institute. Depending on the specifics of the particular grant, small businesses that develop certain technological advancements, or businesses that focus on the inclusion of technology in the schools could qualify.

Research Grants

Whether you are a disabled veteran or a civilian you can apply for research grants pertaining to small business that are available through the federal government. For example, the National Institutes of Health has announced a small business research grant, with funding provided by the Recovery Act for social and behavioral research projects. If your small business is involved, or could potentially be involved, in these areas of public concern, this grant may be a possibility for you. Social and behavioral research projects may include research associated with schools and youth, or the impact of one organization's function on a community, for example.

Non-Profit

Your organization may not be non-profit as a whole, but you can develop a segment of your company that provides a service that is non-profit, making you eligible for non-profit organizational grants. Non-profit grants are generally provided to businesses that serve the community in some way. If, for example, you operate a private school, you can offer one community educational opportunity in the evenings that would be non-profit. Obtaining non-profit status allows you to be eligible for many more grants from government and private entities. Many state entities, as well as private corporations, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, offer non-profit grants to business entities. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation offers numerous types of grants to schools related to technology, and public schools are non-profit organizations.

Private Sources

Your local community government or businesses within your locale may offer grants to disabled veterans. However, often these grants are not publicized so you may have to personally begin contacting local and company leaders to network and find out what resources they may offer.

Fix Water Damage To My Lcd Tv

LCD televisions can be quickly destroyed by water.

Contact with water is one of the worst things that can happen to an electronic device, such as an LCD television. The water causes the metal pathways in the circuit board to short circuit and corrode, making the board useless. Once your television gets wet, it is imperative that you start the drying process as quickly as possible. A circuit board can be fine even after being submersed in water, as long as it is completely dried out before electricity is applied to it.

Instructions

1. Turn the LCD television off and unplug it immediately after contact with water. Water needs electricity to damage electrical components, and your television is consuming power when it is plugged in, regardless of whether it is off.

2. Unscrew the case of your LCD television and expose the circuit boards. Each television will have a slightly different method of opening and require slightly different tools to open it.

3. Disconnect the circuit board or boards from the rest of the television and place them in a bag with your silica gel packets. Leave the boards in the bag overnight. If your circuit boards do not disconnect, place the silica gel packets as close to the boards as possible, and let everything sit for at least two days, or longer if your area has high humidity.

4. Pour any remaining water out of the television casing. Use compressed air, vacuums and rags to ensure you get all of it.

5. Remove the board from the bag and place it on a table in front of you.

6. Wet your brush with the isopropyl alcohol and start wiping down the circuit board. Scrub the board hard enough to remove any corrosion or rust but not enough to damage the components. Make a visual inspection of the board when you are finished to locate any corrosion and clean it again if necessary.

7. Dry the board with your compressed air, then reinstall it in the television. Plug the television in to see if it powers up and everything is working.

Emergency Home Window Repair

Keep your home safe and secure.

Broken window glass is cause for immediate concern and must be dealt with right away. Not only can shards of glass cause injury, your home is no longer as secure as it was. Since it may not always be feasible to call in an expert for window repair, knowing replace a broken window will be helpful in an emergency. It can mean the difference between having an open window for a night or two and having your home safe and secure before the end of the day. Does this Spark an idea?

Clean Up

Before handling any broken glass, put on a heavy pair of work gloves. While you may think you can handle broken glass without gloves, sharp edges are often hidden in the shards of glass. Get all the glass off the floor first, vacuuming up the small pieces. You may be kneeling or putting your hands on the floor and you don't want the small shards cutting you. Then remove the broken glass from the window frame. Shattered glass pulls out quite easily. After all the glass is out, remove the old putty. You want to get all the putty off, but be careful not to damage the frame. If the putty is stuck to the frame, try heating it with a heat gun. As you're removing the putty, remove the glazier's points as well. These are small metal triangles driven into the frame. They sit underneath the putty, holding the glass to the frame. You may need a pair of pliers to remove the glaziers

Measuring for New Glass

Measure the window frame top to bottom and side to side, then subtract 1/16 inch from all four sides. This allows for an easy fit into the pane. Also, if your frame is made of wood, it will expand and contract depending on the humidity in the air. Take the measurements to a glass shop and have a new pane cut. Many hardware stores and home centers also cut glass.

Temporary Covering

If the glass store is closed or if you need to prevent rain, wind or insects from entering your house immediately, cover the open window with clear, thick plastic. You can also use a sturdy trash bag. Use packing tape or duct tape to hold the plastic in place. If possible, secure the plastic to the exterior of the window.

Install New Glass

Once all the old putty is cleaned off completely, apply a thin layer of putty -- approximately 1/16 inch around the frame. Place the the new glass in the frame and insert new glazier points about every 4 inches apart. Use a glazing tool to tap the points into the wood. Use a light blow, sliding the glazier tool up or across the surface of the glass. Don't strike the glass itself. Knead putty until it's pliable and roll it into pencil size strips. Start by applying it in one corner. When it's all in place around the window, smooth it with a putty knife.

What Do I Need To Start A Computer Repair Business

Repairing computers for fun and profit

Computers have become ubiquitous in our society. Businesses rely on them heavily and individuals have enthusiastically adopted this modern convenience for home use. And even with prices falling steadily year after year, these machines are still too costly to simply discard and replace when something goes wrong. Computer repair remains an essential need to businesses and individuals alike.

Skills

A good understanding of computer components and how they work together is essential. The more hands-on experience you have, the better. If you have been an enthusiastic computer "tinkerer" for some time, you probably already have a good understanding of the basics of computer repair. Computer repair is also taught at numerous colleges and trade schools across the country. Troubleshooting skills are especially valuable. Research skills are also important. When you come up against a problem you can't solve, you must know where to go to find solutions. Fortunately, resources for this kind of information are readily available, especially on the Internet. Computer manufacturers' websites and computer enthusiasts' online forums can be especially rich sources of solutions.

Tools

Having the proper tools for computer repair work is essential, and having them organized and easily accessible will make your working life a lot easier. For repair visits to a customer's site, a carrying case with the tools you most often use is a necessity.

Workspace

You will need sufficient workspace to comfortably accommodate several computers, in various states of dis-assembly, at one time. Adequate storage space for tools and spare parts is also important. Office space, even if only a desk, telephone and file cabinet in a corner, is essential for the unavoidable paperwork that your business will require.

Suppliers

You will need sources for the replacement parts you will use in repairing your customer's machines. Buying these parts through regular consumer channels, at regular retail prices, will impact your profits and affect your ability to compete with other repair services on price. Look to computer parts wholesalers and to the parts manufacturers themselves to find the best bargains.

Licenses and Permits

Whether you need any business licenses or permits will depend on your individual location. Start at your local city hall. Municipal staff will either clearly explain the requirements to you or direct you to someone who can.

Accounting

You must keep adequate records of your business operations, not only for tax purposes, but because it will be virtually impossible to profitably run your business without them. If you have a fairly good knowledge of basic accounting concepts and like to do things yourself, computerized accounting software will probably be sufficient. Or, you may prefer to hire an accountant to handle your accounting tasks for you.

Customers

Without customers, you have no business. Hopefully, when you start your computer repair business, you'll already have several friends and acquaintances for whom you have performed repairs in the past. These people will be your first potential customers. Gathering more customers, and retaining those you have, will be a never-ending part of your business. Have professional-quality business cards printed up, and don't be shy about handing them out. Participate in local computer user groups and other relevant organizations to become known to your potential customers. "Word of mouth" is the best advertising of all. Every satisfied customer is worth his weight in gold in spreading the word about your repair services. Your primary job at all times is to keep the customer happy.
