Repair Drywall After Electrical Work

Make areas around electrical boxes fit seamlessly into a wall.


Electricians cut through drywall to gain access to wires when running new wire or adding or removing receptacles, utility boxes and light switches. An electrician will often cut more drywall than needed to increase his workspace. After installing a receptacle, junction box or new light switch, the hole surrounding the new feature is larger and requires filling. Instructions


Large Holes


1. To repair large holes after removing switches, receptacles or boxes, cut a thin piece of wood 2 inches larger than the hole. Cut a piece of hardware cloth 1 inch bigger than the hole in all directions. Apply fast-drying construction adhesive to the center of the wood and affix the hardware cloth to the wood. Allow the adhesive to dry for five minutes.


2. Thread a length of string through the hardware cloth and around the back of the wood so that you hold both ends of the string in your hand. Apply construction adhesive to each end of the wood and around the edges of the hardware cloth. Insert the wood and hardware cloth into the hole with the adhesive facing you. Position the wood in the center of the hole. Draw the string toward you so the wood and cloth adheres to the inside of the wall. Hold it in place until the adhesive sets, generally less than five minutes.


3. Apply a layer of drywall compound with a putty knife over the hardware cloth and wood while keeping tension on the string. Do not cover the string; leave a 1/4 inch gap around it. Allow the drywall compound to set for one hour.


4. Cut the string with a utility knife and fill in the hole with drywall compound. Let the drywall compound dry completely, typically two to three hours, and sand smooth with 120-grit sandpaper.


Small Holes


5. To repair small holes drilled when fishing for wires, sand the surface of the hole with 120-grit sandpaper to make it smooth.


6. Press drywall compound into the hole with a putty knife. Build it up so it sits just above the existing drywall surface.


7. Allow the drywall compound to dry completely, usually two to three hours.


8. Sand the repair smooth with 120-grit sandpaper.


Overcuts


9. To repair overcuts on receptacles, light switches and boxes, apply drywall compound to the void space between the receptacle, switch or box. Press it in to coat the edges of the drywall and outside edges of the electrical box. Remove drywall compound from the inside edges of the utility box with a putty knife.


10. Place drywall tape over the wet drywall compound, up to the edge of the electrical box and smooth it out with a flexible putty knife. Apply a layer of drywall compound over the tape. Allow the drywall compound to dry for one to two hours.


11. Apply another layer of drywall compound over the dry compound and allow it to set for one to two hours. Apply a third layer and allow it to dry. Keep the layers thin so they adhere, set and dry properly.


12. Sand the repair with 120-grit sandpaper so it sits flush with the existing wall.

Repair Drywall

There are a lot of problems that can make you need to repair drywall. A patch will make the difference in most cases. Sometimes you will have to use extra wallboard to complete the task, and sometimes it is a very small job requiring only a smear of compound and a light sanding. Read on to learn repair drywall. Begin the Repairs Needed


1. Look over the proposed project. Determine the size of the repair needed. If any areas need a repair of more than drywall, do these before starting the patch process.


2. Choose between lightweight and all purpose drywall compounds if the repair is nothing more than a dent in the drywall. Lightweight compound weighs less, sands easier and dries quicker. All purpose compounds are heavier and preferred by old-school drywall finishers.


3. Sand the area you just finished. Assuming that this is all you will need to do, you will only need an eight-inch knife and a sanding block with sandpaper. Smooth out the edges and texture the area. Apply compound using the eight-inch knife. Let it dry, sand edges to match, and apply texturing with a sponge and some fresh compound.


4. Put a good amount of drywall compound on the area that needs a patch. Plan to use three or four coats of compound on the drywall repair. Sand the patched area to give a smooth transition to the wall board from the compounded area. Go about an inch past the drywall compound area all around when you sand, continuing until all looks smooth.


Complete the Repairs Needed


5. Use an adhesive patch made of aluminum screen covered by fiberglass mesh if covering a doorknob hole. It applies in much the same way as a bandage with a peel-off back. Use the drywall compound to finish the patch job. Sand the site as shown above.


6. Create a V-shaped groove with your taping knife corner and follow it along the path of any crack you find. Apply a thin coat of drywall compound with an inch or so overlap on all sides and sand lightly. Use an eight-inch taping knife to smooth out the areas of the drywall compound into the untouched drywall on most patch areas.


7. Cut large hole areas into a square shape. Add a piece of wallboard to the repair area. Be sure that you span at least two studs with the new wallboard. Screw the wallboard into place (making sure there is a wood stud behind it to take the screws). Place self-adhesive fiber mesh to hold the wallboard in place, and then apply the drywall compound and sand accordingly.


8. Go over all repairs with a hand sander and coarse sandpaper. Apply thing layers of compound to all of the sanded areas, let dry, then sand again.

Preparing to Thaw the Pipe


1. Boil 2 gallons of water.


2. Either build, find, or purchase two lengths of pipe connected together at a 90-degree angle with an elbow. The diameter of this pipe must be smaller than that of the pipe which is frozen. This is your thaw pipe.


3. Using a pipe wrench, remove the fitting from the pipe that is frozen.


4. Place a bucket on the floor beneath the opening to the frozen pipe. You may also want to place towels or other cloths out to catch any excess or errant water.


Thawing the Pipe


5. Take the thaw pipe constructed in the previous section and insert one end into the frozen pipe. Make sure the other end of the thaw pipe is sticking straight up.


6. Place the funnel at the top end of the thaw pipe.


7. Pour boiling water into the thaw pipe.


8. As the ice inside the pipe melts, push the thaw pipe further into the pipe.


9. When the flow of water begins, remove the thaw pipe. Do not stop the flow of water until all of the ice is melted and the thaw pipe is out of the pipe.

Repair Driveway And Concrete Steps

When repairing concrete driveways and steps, you may encounter several types of damage. Both small and large cracks are common due to the settling of the ground beneath the structures. Accidents may also cause holes or divots in the surface. Crumbling edges are common on steps due to the impact of being stepped on, inclement weather and contact with salts and other caustic substances. Cracks


1. Place a tube of siliconized latex caulk into a pressure gun.


2. Open the caulk and place the tip as far into the crack as possible.


3. Squeeze the trigger of the gun to fill the crack with caulk until it is full or slightly overflowing.


4. Use a putty knife to smooth the top of the caulk so that it lays flat against the concrete.Use the edge of the knife to scrape away excess caulk.


5. Allow the filled cracks to dry for 24 hours before touching them.


Holes and Divots


6. Apply a 3/8-inch-thick layer of concrete patch inside and around the edge of the hole or divot using a pointed metal trowel.


7. Wait 1 to 2 hours until this patch is soft-set.


8. Use the trowel to fill the hole or divot completely with concrete patch. Make the top of the patch even with the undamaged concrete around it.


9. Wipe the trowel clean or use a second trowel. Use the flat face of the trowel to smooth the surface of the patch. Hold the trowel at a 45-degree angle and scrape up any excess patch material with the angled edge.


10. Allow the filled holes and/or divots to dry 24 to 48 hours before touching them.


Crumbling Edges


11. Resurface the edges of concrete driveways and stairs to cease any crumbling. Remove any small, loose bits of concrete by scrubbing a stiff-bristled brush over the damaged areas. Sweep the surface clean with a broom and dustpan.


12. Spread a thin application of concrete bonding agent to the crumbling areas with a medium-sized paintbrush.


13. Apply a 3/8-inch-thick layer of prepared concrete to the areas with a clean metal trowel. Smooth the concrete as much as possible with the flat of the trowel, then allow it to set up for 1-2 hours.


14. Use the trowel to completely fill the crumbling areas with concrete, then smooth the surface again with the trowel. Wait 30 minutes.


15. Cover all of the new concrete with a plastic tarp and cure the concrete for 7 days. Once a day, lightly spray the concrete with water, then replace the tarp. Remove the tarp at the end of the week.

Fruit Trees For Southern Nevada

Pomegranate trees have flourished in southern Nevada for more than 100 years.


Fruit trees do extremely well in southern Nevada. The soil in the region often lacks organic matter, so add abundant compost prior to planting any fruit tree. Begin soil preparation months before actually planting the tree to help ensure its long-term health, growth and crop production. Choose a planting location with well-draining soil conditions. Pomegranate


The pomegranate (Punica granatum) grows well in southern Nevada and has been a popular fruit tree choice since the 1800s, according to the University of Nevada's website. A common ornamental or landscape shrub, it can also be fashioned into a landscape hedge through pruning. The pomegranate grows between 12 to 16 feet but can reach 30 feet. Exceptionally ornamental, it produces orange-reddish, yellow, white or salmon flowers and large, brilliant red fruit.


Grow in soil that is well draining. It tolerates the sandy or adobe clay soils of the region well. Plant during the winter months when the pomegranate is dormant. Choose a location that offers full sunlight. Once established the plant is exceptionally drought tolerant.


In southern Nevada the pomegranate suffers no major pests or diseases, according to the University of Nevada's website. Many pomegranate cultivars are self fertile but others require a pollinator.


Apricot


Apricot trees (Prunus family) do well in southern Nevada. Choose apricot trees grafted upon Nemaguard root stock for the best success in the region. Several varieties are adapted to the climate well, such as Royal Rosa, Gold Kist and Moorpark. The apricot tree grows to a height of 15 to 20 feet. During the early spring, the tree produces an abundance of blossoms followed by fruit.


The apricot tree is self-fertile but the tree will produce a more abundant crop is planted with a pollinator tree close. Plant the trees during fall, winter or early spring dormancy. Choose a planting location in full sunlight with well-draining soil conditions. Space standard trees at least 25 feet apart but dwarf stock can successfully be grown with only 8 feet of space between the trees.


Asian Pear


Asian pear varieties (Pyrus serotina L.) grow well in southern Nevada. They produce firm, crisp, round fruit. One of the best root stocks to consider is the Betulaefolia rootstock, according to the University of California's website. Also consider trying OHxF333 root stock for the southern Nevada region. Most cultivars will require cross-pollination to produce an ample fruit crop, so plant more than one tree in the home landscape. Consider planting the cultivars Shinko, Ya Li, Twentieth Century or Hosui. The tree will normally attain a height of around 12 feet.


Plant Asian pears in the late winter during their dormancy. Space the trees 12 to 15 feet apart when planting. Choose a location with full sunlight and well-draining soil. Keep the soil moist for the first five years of the tree's life. After it is well-established, it will require less water.

Recharge Freon To Repair A Refrigerator

Refrigerators use Freon to stay cold.


Freon, Dupont's trademarked name for CFC and HCFC refrigerants, has become a generic name for all refrigerants. Refrigerators manufactured before 1995 usually contained R-12, a CFC, as a refrigerant. Only EPA certified technicians can buy R-12. Refrigerators manufactured from 1995 to the present typically use R-134a, an HFC, as a refrigerant. Both refrigerators and automobiles use R-134a as a refrigerant, and adults can buy it at most automobile parts stores. Combining the noncompatible refrigerants R-12 and R134a will lock up the compressor. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Remove the compressor access cover from the rear of the refrigerator. Use a Philips screwdriver or a nut driver to remove the screws.


2. Look at the tag found on the compressor for the type of refrigerant used.


3. Install a saddle valve on the large copper pipe coming from the compressor. A saddle valve pierces the refrigerant line for access. A saddle valve uses two pieces to wrap around the pipe with hex-head screws holding them together. Use the hex-head wrench that comes with the valve assembly to tighten the hex-head screws.


4. Install a refrigerant valve adapter to the saddle valve. The adapter screws onto the saddle valve service port.


5. Connect a refrigerant charging hose kit to a can of refrigerant. The charging hose kit includes a color-coded gauge, hose, threaded fitting that connects to the can of refrigerant, and a service valve connection that will connect to the adapter on the saddle valve.


6. Connect the charging hose connection to the saddle valve adapter. This snaps into place.


7. Use the hex-head wrench to turn the piercing valve, found in the center of the top half of the saddle valve, three full turns. Back the wrench out one full turn. Residual refrigerant from the refridgerator should enter the charging hose.


8. Turn on the refrigerator. Allow it to run until the pressure gauge stops dropping. This usually takes three to five minutes.


9. Check the pressure gauge. R-134a ideally should have between 25 and 45 psi. Open the refrigerant can port, allowing refrigerant to enter the system. Close the port every minute to check the pressure. Continue to add refrigerant until the pressure has reached the correct range.


10. Close the piercing valve with the hex-head wrench. Disconnect the charging hose. Reinstall the compressor access cover.

Foreclosed homes or bank-owned real estate can offer a terrific deal for the first-time home buyer or investor. When a home passes through foreclosure, banks want to get these properties off of their books as soon as possible as they pose a management and financial headache, costing them dearly in human and financial capital until a qualified buyer steps forth.


Home foreclosures continue to play a significant role in shaping the housing industry, keeping home prices low, but eventually the crisis will subside and with that will disappear an opportunity for bargain-seeking home buyers.

Some towns and counties post tax information online, but a visit to the local tax assessor's office will help you uncover that information that will come in handy once you are prepared to negotiate with the bank.


2. Hire a home inspector. Most foreclosed homes are sold as is, which is an indication to you by the bank that their asking price is firm. But do not allow that to stop you from seeking the advice of a home inspector, who can give you a clearer picture of repairs to be made, even outline the costs of making them.


While you may not be able to have the bank cover $30,000 in repairs, you can use your property inspection as leverage once you negotiate. Your home inspector's finding could legitimately reveal that the home has more problems than the bank had thought. With scores if not hundreds or even thousands of foreclosed homes to manage, the bank simply does not have the resources to handle each home foreclosure thoroughly.


3. Present your offer. With home and neighborhood information known, present your offer to the bank. If you are working with a real estate agent, he will do that for you. Like any homeowner, the bank can choose to accept, reject or counter your offer.


Be prepared to have in mind a price you are willing to pay, but be open to the bank agreeing to hold the note on your loan, with lower down payment, smaller closing costs, and perhaps some fees waived. If you are already approved for a mortgage, then the bank may be more receptive to your offer. Find a place where you can agree on price and close the deal, but if you cannot, then be prepared to walk. There are many other home foreclosures on the market for you to consider.

2. Check with local churches and nonprofit organizations. Many churches provide assistance by supplying volunteers who are willing to come to your home and do the work for you. You may need to buy the necessary supplies, but the labor will be free.


3. Contact your local cooperative extension office. They often run workshops in the fall of the year on weatherization and provide resources and tips for winterizing your home. Some offer free materials like water heater wraps to those who attend the workshop.

1. Remove the dishwasher racks from the dishwasher and place them on a clear surface covered with newspapers, which will protect the surface and collect any dust and debris from the repairs.


2. Scrub the rust spots on the tines of the dishwasher racks with steel wool, smoothing down the rough surfaces. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands when handling the coarse, itchy steel wool.


3. Trim any rusty tine tips off with heavy-duty wire cutters if it appears the tine tips cannot be adequately smoothed down with the steel wool. After cutting off the tips, use the steel wool to buff out the rough edges. Use the dishrag to wipe off the dust from sanding down the rust.


4. Apply a coating of the liquid vinyl paint to the exposed rusty areas, ensuring full coverage. Allow the paint to dry, then inspect the areas. If needed, apply a second coat of the liquid vinyl paint as a precaution, then let the paint dry.


5. Install the vinyl tine caps to the ends of any exposed dishwasher rack tines. Follow the vinyl tine cap manufacturer's instructions for applying the glue and caps that are included in the kit.


6. Allow the glue in the vinyl tine cap application to dry thoroughly before re-installing the dishwasher racks inside the dishwasher.

Identify An Antique Treadle Sewing Machine

In 1850 Isaac M. Singer envisioned the treadle, a cast-iron, foot-powered pedal, as a convenient, marketable device to power sewing machines. Although he did not invent the treadle or patent it, his New Family Model 12 (1865-1902) made the treadle machine affordable for approximately two million customers, according to International Sewing Machine Collectors' Society (ISMACS). This antique treadle model, just one among many, offered more manual freedom and greater control of fabric than previous hand-cranked models. To identify antique treadle machines, note design features, serial numbers and trademarks.


Instructions


1. Recognize the basic components of an antique treadle machine, including the entire cast-iron treadle mount supporting the table top. Also note the foot pedal attached to a treadle rod and the treadle belt made of leather. A treadle machine has no electronic connection or plastic parts.


2. Examine distinctive design features. For example, a Kimball & Morton treadle, first manufactured in 1868, had an eagle and lion design on the treadle end casting, accompanied by the words "Strength and Speed." The Singer name often appeared in cast iron above the treadle. Sometimes treadles hid within ornate parlor cabinets, designed more for show and status than hard work.


3. Locate a serial number on your machine to identify its age. Collectors, such as Berzack, collect antique treadles through the 1940s but focus on those produced before 1900. Some manufacturers, such as Singer, have extensive records about their serial numbers after 1870. The White Sewing Machine Company, a major rival to Singer after 1926, has less extensive records. Numerous sites, such as ISMACS, Singer or White can help with the identification of your antique treadle machine.


4. Search for a trademark on your pre-1950 treadle sewing machine but acknowledge its limitations. Years ago, distributors acquiring at least 100 machines would "badge" them with their own trademark or name, disguising the original manufacturer, including foreign imports. Sears placed its brand name on many machines, including the popular Franklin Rotary that the White Sewing Machine Company produced. In contrast, the Singer Sewing Company never put another distributor's name on its products, according to Berzack's interview in Collectors Weekly.


5. Differentiate among early Singer imitations when identifying your antique treadle machine. In 1894, the Goodrich Sewing Machine Company called one of its treadle machines the "Improved Singer." Manufacturers even copied the "S" emblem from Singer. Many companies that sold their machines in the Sears Roebuck catalog copied early 1900 Singer models. For example, the Davis company imitated Singer's attractive Memphis decals with an Egyptian equivalent. After using the Davis models, Sears switched to Domestic, a company that also replicated Singer designs.


6. Use the information you have gathered to assess the value of your machine or to find needed parts. The ISMACS website can provide you with comprehensive information about collections through its numerous links.

If the budget for the house repairs is exhausted, outdoor repairs can wait for the next stage of work.

Repair Deck Railings

A railing gives a deck a nice feeling of enclosure and makes it safer as well. In fact, most building codes require you to put a railing around any deck 30 inches (76 cm) or more above the ground. But a railing can't do its job if it has broken or missing balusters, or wobbly handrails or posts. Deck parts are fairly standard, so there's a good chance you'll be able to find premade pieces at your lumberyard that will make the repairs below as easy as possible. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions


Replacing a baluster


1. Remove the damaged baluster by backing out its screws using an electric drill with a screwdriver bit. If it's nailed on, hammer near the top of the baluster on the opposite side of the nails to loosen them, then pry off the baluster with a hammer or pry bar. (Note: In some deck railings, the balusters are attached to a rail on top and to the end joist of the deck on bottom.)


2. Cut a replacement baluster to the length of the old baluster. The ends should be cut at a 45-degree angle; use a power miter saw or a saw and a miter box.


3. Hold the new baluster in position against the rails, centered between the balusters on either side. The angled cuts on the ends will be facing outward.


4. With a 1/8-inch (3-mm) drill bit, make a pilot hole through the baluster at each end, drilling through the flat front about 1/2 inch (12 mm) from the angled ends, and into the rails.


5. Drive a 2 1/2-inch (6-cm) galvanized screw into each pilot hole to attach the baluster to the rails (see A).


6. Apply wood preservative or finish if necessary.


Reinforcing a handrail


7. Cut a pressure-treated 2-by-4 scrap so that its length is the same as the width of the railing post. Use a power miter saw or a saw and a miter box.


8. Place the scrap inside the corner formed by the handrail and the railing post.


9. Using an electric drill with a screwdriver bit, drive two 3-inch (7.5-cm) galvanized screws through the block and into the post.


10. Drive one 2 1/2-inch (6-cm) screw down through the handrail and into the block, being careful not to run into the first two screws.


11. If possible, drive one 2 1/2-inch (6-cm) screw through the side rail or the side of the top rail into the end of the block.


Replacing a post


12. Detach the handrail and any long side rails from the post. Back out any screws holding them to the post; to remove nails, hold a wood scrap underneath the handrail or inside the rail, and hammer on the block until the nails release enough to be pried off.


13. Remove the old post from the base of the deck. This will require either removing nails as above or removing lag screws from the side of the post with a socket wrench.


14. Using the old post as a template, draw lines on a length of 4-by-4 lumber to replicate its length and shape.


15. Cut along the lines on the 4-by-4 with a handsaw, and cut out a notch in the bottom so that it will fit over the base of the deck and align with the remainder of the railing. Use a saw and a miter box (or a power miter saw) to make an angled cut at the bottom of the post.


16. Apply wood preservative to the inside surfaces of the notch.


17.Put the new post in place so that the handrail and side rails meet it at the proper places.


18. Drill two pilot holes through the bottom part of the post into the base of the deck.


19. Install two 5-inch (13-cm) lag screws with washers into the pilot holes; tighten firmly (see B).


20. Reattach the handrail and side rails to the new post, using 2 1/2-inch (6-cm) screws.


21. Apply wood preservative or stain to any new parts as needed.

Replace A Needle In A Sewing Machine

It always happens. You're on a roll. You're pushing that fabric through, pushing that pedal to the grindstone, and it happens. You hear the loud pop and feel a tiny prick against your face or arm. You've broken a needle. But there's no use crying over a broken needle They're fast and easy to replace, as long as you have some back up needles around. Nowadays, sewing machines use universal needles, which will fit just about every machine. Just consider it a hiccup on your path to a beautiful finished garment. And next time, slow down.


Instructions


1. Look for a screw or knob in the area above your sewing machine's foot, near the top of the needle. This holds the needle in place.


2. Turn the screw or knob, depending on your sewing machine. Use your hand or, if necessary, a small screwdriver.


3. Once this knob is loosened, the broken needle should fall out. Take it out, and throw it away.


4. The top of your new sewing machine needle will have a rounded side and a flat side. With the flat side pointed toward the back of the machine, insert it in the hole that held your old needle.


5. Make sure your needle is pushed up as high as it will go, and turn the knob that will hold it in place.


6. Make sure your needle is secure by giving it a little tug at the base.


7. Rethread your machine, and get back to sewing!

Kentucky Home Improvement Grants

Kentucky homeowners can pay for plumbing repairs with grants.


Kentucky homeowners, rental property managers and public housing authorities are eligible for government grants to renovate and repair their homes and housing units. Kentucky Department of Aging

The Very Low-Income Housing Repair Program awards grants of up to $7,500 to homeowners 62 years of age and older who cannot afford loans. Grant recipients cannot sell their homes for three years. Veterans in Kentucky who have service-related disabilities can apply for grants through any of the state's regional Medical Centers of the Department of Veteran Affairs. The Home Improvement and Structural Alterations program awards grants up to $4,200 to veterans to make modifications and improvements to their homes for better mobility and access. Grants of up to $1,200 are awarded to low-income veterans who are on Medicaid.


Local Grants


Cities and county government agencies also sponsor grants for their residents. In Covington, Kentucky, for instance, the Home Repair Program provides financial assistance to low-income residents to make emergency home repairs to protect lives and save the houses' structures. Financial assistance is in the form of loans; however they are interest-free and are forgivable. Kentucky homeowners should check with their local government agencies for financial assistance opportunities.


Federal Grants


Kentucky homeowners and property managers can apply for grants from federal government agencies to improve their homes. For example, the Department of Energy sponsors the Weatherization Assistance Program, which covers projects to make homes energy efficient. Install Fireplace Flashing

Chimney flashing creates a waterproof barrier that protects your ceiling from leaks.


A fireplace provides any room in the house with a warm ambiance the whole family can enjoy. That enjoyment will be short-lived, however, if your chimney starts leaking. The moisture from a leaky chimney can damage your rafters and wooden ceiling joists while also leaving an unsightly water stain on your ceiling. Michigan State University notes that if your fireplace leak is the result of poorly-installed or worn out flashing, replacing the flashing not only stops the leak, it extends the life of your chimney. Instructions


1. Pry up the nails securing the shingles around the chimney with the claw of your hammer. Because the same set of roofing nails penetrates two shingles in each row, you must pry up two shingles on all four sides of the chimney to expose the old flashing.


2. Pry up and remove the old flashing using the hammer's claw.


3. Use the old flashing as a pattern for cutting new flashing. Mark the cut lines and the bend of each piece of new flashing with a permanent marker. Discard the old flashing.


4. Clamp each piece of flashing to a 2-by-4 block of wood with metal clamps. Place another 2-by-4 wood block over the flashing and strike it with a hammer. This bends the flashing to a perfect 90 degree angle.


5. Align the bend in each piece of flashing with the groove where the chimney meets the roof. Slide a shingle over the flashing until the edge of the shingle lies flush with the groove between the roof and chimney.


6. Nail the shingle to the roof. The nails will pass through the flashing and secure it to the roof simultaneously. Lay the second shingle in place, ensuring that it partially overlaps the first shingle. Nail the second shingle to the roof. Repeat this process around the entire chimney.


7. Squeeze roofing caulk into the gap between the top of the flashing and the chimney to further reduce your risk of leaks and water damage.

Do It Yourself Oven Repairs

The oven is the second most often used appliance in most homes, falling behind the refrigerator only in that respect. Even though the microwave has replaced the oven for many of the tasks it once performed, the conventional oven is still a key appliance. When things break on an oven it makes sense to first try and repair it yourself, both to save money and to keep the oven working like new. Door Handle Repairs


The oven door is constantly being opened and closed, so it's no wonder it often needs repair. It will frequently work loose and the door hinges will often become misaligned. To fix a door handle simply locate the hardware that attaches it to the oven door. Then loosen both screws with a Phillips head or slot-head screwdriver. Remove the bolts and replace them with new ones. Replace the washers and nuts (if any) and tighten to give the door a snug fit.


Door Hinges


To repair the hinges on an oven door you need to remove the door completely. A majority of ovens use a drop or slide hinge which is connected to the frame inside the oven walls. To get at these you will have to remove the side panels on most ovens by loosening the screws that attach the panels to the frame. In some cases you can lift up and pull out on the oven door to lift it off the hinges. Once removed, use a T-square or small carpenter's level to assess whether or not the hinges are bent. Bend them so they are straight once again, and then apply a small amount of WD-40 or grease to the hinge bolts on the door. Replace and the doors should work like new.


Elements


The elements on a typical oven today are electrically conductive pieces of wire that generate a large amount of heat when a current is conducted through them. Food, grease and other particles can collect on the oven elements and cause them to malfunction or not heat up at all. The best bet to fix these is to simply replace them. Elements can be purchased at a hardware or home appliance store. Match the elements to your make and model. Then to replace, turn off the oven and lightly pull the faulty element forward and out of the socket. Insert the new element into the socket and then test the oven by turning it back on.

Repair A Rubber Floor Mat

In addition to providing a cushion over another surface, rubber floor mats are popular because they are durable and not easily damaged. Rubber floor mats are also easy to clean and maintain. Instructions


1. Use a garden hose to rinse off your mat and remove any loose dirt or debris.


2. Pour some household detergent into a bucket of water. Add enough detergent so the water is soapy.


3. Dip a scrub brush into the solution and give the mat a good scrubbing. If the mat has grooves, make sure the brush reaches into those areas as well. Shake off the mat and allow it to air-dry.

Home Improvement Tax Deductions

Home improvements can add value to your home even when the market is down. According to Interest.com, the three most valuable home improvements are adding upscale siding, adding a wooden deck and minor kitchen remodeling. There is no direct deduction for money that you spend on improving your house. However, there are a number of indirect savings that you can benefit from on your taxes for expenses you incur for home improvements.


Improvements versus Repairs


The IRS distinguishes between home improvements and home repairs. Home improvements are projects that add additional value to your home while home repairs are maintenance activities related to the upkeep of your property. For example, adding a garage to your home would be a home improvement while repainting your garage would be a home repair. Generally, expenses related to home repairs are not tax deductible.


Loan Interest


If you take out a mortgage to finance your home improvements, you can deduct the interest you pay on the loan. For single tax filers, the deduction is capped at the interest on the first $500,000 of the loan. For married couples who file a joint return, the limit is the interest on the first $1,000,000 of the loan. If you take out a home equity loan and use it exclusively for improving your home, the interest deduction is subject to the same limitations as a mortgage. However, if you take out a home equity loan that is not used exclusively for your home, you can still deduct the interest on the first $50,000 ($100,000 if married filing jointly) of the loan.


File


The interest is deductible in the year that you pay it. In order to claim the interest deduction for home improvement loans, you have to itemize your deductions. This means you cannot claim the standard deduction and you have to file using Form 1040.


Increased Basis


Another tax advantage to putting money into home improvements is increasing your basis in the home. Your basis is the amount of money you paid for the home. When you sell your home, as long as you have lived in it for at least two of the past five years, you do not have to pay capital gains taxes on the first $250,000 of profit. Any money that you spend on home improvements can be added to your basis to reduce the profit that you have to pay taxes on when you sell the house.


Ways to Include Home Repairs in Deductions


Normally, home repairs are not included as home improvement deductions on your taxes because they are maintenance costs rather than improvement costs. However, if you are able to combine repairs with home improvements you are allowed to count them as part of cost of home improvements. For example, if you decide you want to remodel your bathroom you can replace the old pipes as well and include that as part of your deduction. If you had only replaced that pipes that would have been considered a home repair.

Instructions


Prior to Installation


1. Contact the local fire department and building authorities to find out if specific installation requirements exist in your area.


2. Contact your home insurance company to find out if it requires any specific installation standards, or if installing a wood burning stove will affect your policy in any way .


3. Check the pamphlets or brochures that come with the stove for specific installation requirements and to see if the stove is approved for manufactured or mobile homes. The instructions that come with the stove should include nationally recognized installation standards for manufactured or mobile homes.


Placement


4. Determine where you want to locate your stove.


5. Place the stove at least 18 inches from the wall. That means 18 inches from the wall all the way around the stove for the safest installation.


6. Determine if you must place the stove closer than 18 inches from the wall, and if so, prepare to provide floor protection for the surface beneath the stove that extends all the way to the wall.


Floors


7. Measure the length of the stove's legs.


8. If the legs are 2 inches or less in length, you must lay 4-inch thick hollow masonry blocks on the floor to cover the entire space beneath the stove.


9. If the legs are more than 2 inches long you must lay 2-inch thick hollow masonry blocks on the floor to cover the entire space beneath the stove.


10. Place a sheet of 24 gauge sheet metal over the masonry blocks.


Heat Shield


11. Use another sheet of 24 gauge sheet metal to create a heat shield between the stove and the wall behind it. The length of the sheet metal will depend on the size of the stove, as you will want to protect the entire space behind your stove. The Ohio Department of Commerce recommends that the width of the shield be at least 36 inches.


12. Mount the sheet metal on the wall using noncombustible spacers.


13. Make sure there is a 1-inch space between the wall and the shield so when the shield becomes hot it does not burn the wall.


Stove Pipe


14. Determine if you'll need an additional heat shield at the spot where the stove pipe exits the wall. You can accomplish this by measuring the distance from the pipe to the wall. If it is 18 inches or more, no protection is required. Eighteen inches of clearance is the required safety standard. However, if the pipe is 9 inches or less, you should use another section of 24 gauge sheet metal on the wall behind the pipe.


15. Fit together the male and female sections of the stove pipe and fasten the sections together with sheet metal screws.

Repair Cracked Concrete With Selfleveling Concrete

Repair cracks in concrete with self-leveling compound.


Cracks in concrete occur for many different reasons, some of which include ground settling, poor concrete installation using too much water or using an excess of de-icing salt to remove ice and snow. Repairing cracked concrete with self-leveling concrete will not only increase the concrete's strength but enhance the appearance of the concrete so it looks brand new again. Self-leveling concrete is a pourable concrete compound used for repairing uneven and/or cracked concrete. Using self-leveling concrete to repair cracks is a simple process requiring a bit of patience to complete. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Turn on a wet/dry shop vacuum and use it to vacuum out the cracks within the concrete. This will remove all dirt and loose debris that could interfere with the repair.


2. Wash the inside and surrounding areas of the cracks with a pressure washer to remove any dirt, grime or grease. Use the wet/dry vacuum to suck away any standing water within the crack. Allow the concrete to dry.


3. Dip a small paintbrush into the concrete bonding adhesive, and apply a thin layer to the interior bottom and sides of the crack. Different concrete bonding adhesives may require diluting with water. The size of the paintbrush will depend upon the size of the crack. Choose a paintbrush that is small enough to fit all the way inside the concrete crack. Concrete bonding adhesives allow the self-leveling concrete to bond to the exposed surface of the crack, eliminating the risk of separation.


4. Allow the concrete bonding adhesive to dry for one to two hours. It may be sooner or later depending upon the size of the area.


5. Mix the self-leveling compound with water in a 5-gallon bucket, according to package instructions. Use a mixing paddle attached to a power drill to remove any lumps from the self-leveling compound until the mixture resembles a pourable milkshake.


6. Pour the self-leveling compound into the concrete cracks until they are full. Use a metal trowel to feather out the edges of the compound so they are even with the surrounding concrete surface. Repeat this process until all the cracks within the concrete are filled and leveled with the surrounding area. Allow the self-leveling compound to dry overnight.

Repair Concrete From Salt Damage

Cracked concrete can be repaired.


When snow and ice cover concrete driveways and walkways, many homeowners treat it with rock salt to help it melt and add traction to the slippery surfaces. There is nothing wrong with putting salt on your concrete surfaces if the concrete was installed correctly. But if the concrete was poured less than 30 days before the first freeze or has tiny fractures, the salt will seep into it and cause it to crack. Patch these cracks the right way and your concrete surfaces will look great for years to come. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Scrub the inside of the crack with a scrub brush to loosen gravel and debris. Vacuum loose dust and gravel from the crack. Dampen the inside of the crack with water.


2. Mix pre-mixed concrete with water in a bucket. Add water until the concrete is the consistency of paint. Stir in a concrete bonding agent according to manufacturer instructions.


3. Add pre-mixed concrete to a separate bucket and add water until the concrete is the consistency of cookie dough.


4. Dip a paint brush into the first mixture. Paint the inside of the crack with the runny cement mixture.


5. Scoop up the second mixture with the end of a trowel and fill the crack. Smooth the concrete to the top of the crack and spread evenly with the trowel. Let the concrete set until it starts to harden, then smooth with a rubber float or the steel edge of the trowel to create an even appearance.


6. Cover the patched area with plastic wrap. Let the concrete cure for four to seven days. Spray the patched area lightly with a hose each day to create the most durable patch job.

Decks are very common exterior features built into homes today, but are often exposed to weather and sunlight leading to damages ranging from wood rot to chipped paint. Catching and repairing deck damage early is the best way to ensure its extended life. 1. Examine the damage to the existing deck. Look for water or rot damage (making the wood discolored and soft) in wood components, chipping paint or stain, and rust on metal components; parts with this type of damage should be replaced.


2. Make a list of the different materials that need replacing (material types and sizes/dimensions). For paint or stain that needs replacing, it may be best to plan on replacing all of the paint or stain, as new material may stand out among older aged material.


3. Call or visit the local building supply center and quote the costs for material to replace those on the list from step two. Consider the cost of any extra materials or equipment (screws, nails, paintbrushes, etc.) that may be needed or purchased for the repairs and add all costs together to find the total cost of replacement materials.


4. Calculate the cost of labor to complete the deck repairs. This amount can either be a flat amount, or based on an hourly rate. This information usually comes with experience, and you should consider how many hours it will take to complete the work, and how much extra help you may need.

Repair Exposed Aggregate Driveway Cracks

Repairing asphalt driveways


Thin driveway cracks can become larger, deep driveway cracks if repairs are not made in a timely manner. Thin cracks retain water, freeze and widen the crack to a large hole, exposing the aggregate underneath. Instructions


Asphalt Driveway Repair


1. Strike a cold chisel with a hammer to create a square or rectangular hole around the crack, squaring off any curved areas.


2. Sweep away dirt, debris and loose asphalt pieces.


3. Apply a 1-inch layer of cold-mix asphalt patching material.


4. Tamp the patching material tightly into the hole. Use the end of a two-by-four piece of lumber if you do not own a tamper. Continue to add 1-inch layers, follow by tamping until the patch is flush with the surface of the driveway.


5. Apply a coat of high-grade driveway sealant.


Concrete Driveway Repair


6. Strike a cold chisel with a hammer to make a squared off area around the crack, sloping the edges inward.


7. Use a stiff wire brush to rough the edges of the crack, remove loose concrete pieces and sweep away debris.


8. Apply epoxy concrete bonding agent to the edges of the hole.


9. Mix concrete according the directions on the bag and pour the concrete into the hole, making it slightly higher than the driveway surface.


10. Place a flat piece of wood on the side of the patch and drag it across the patch to remove extra concrete.

How Far Should You Live From Highvoltage Power Lines

Power line radiation emissions can vary in distance depending on the strength of the currents.


Information on the health effects of high-voltage power lines shows conflicting evidence in terms of actual validated effects and whether safety precautions are warranted. The amount of electromagnetic energy produced by power lines can vary depending on how they have been constructed. Determining a safe living distance requires knowing the amount of energy a particular line produces.


Electromagnetic Fields


The body’s cellular processes rely on electrical signals for intracellular communications and the chemical reactions that compose cell metabolism. According to EM Watch, certain levels of exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) can alter cell activity by producing electrical charges within the body. Exposure level depends on the strength of the fields and the distance between the source and the person. The greater the distance from these fields, the less powerful their effects on body processes. As distance and electromagnetic strength influence overall health risk, few specific regulations exist regarding how far power lines should be placed from residences.


Radiation Emissions


Neighborhood power lines, cell phones, microwaves and computers make up just a few of the devices capable of emitting electromagnetic radiation emissions. The amount of current carried by neighborhood power lines has a bearing on the amount of radiation emitted. Wiring configurations can also affect emission amounts. According to EM Watch, the type of power line suspended between street poles can produce dangerous electromagnetic fields as far out as 30 meters. As power usage amounts can vary during different times of the day, EMF emission distances can also vary according to peak versus average usage levels.


Power Line Testing


Low-frequency EMF meters can be used to determine the amount of electromagnetic radiation coming from nearby power lines. EMF meters can measure emissions at varying distances and at different times of the day. These devices measure radiation in milligaus units, which indicate magnetic field strength. According to EM Watch, a reading of 0.5 milligaus or more falls within dangerous levels of radiation emission. The average neighborhood power line typically generates 0.3 milligaus, which can reach as far as 400 meters away.


Research Studies


According to Harvard Health Publications, 20 years worth of research studies show no actual proof of health risks associated with exposures to power lines. One research study conducted in England examined the effects of EMFs on 83,000 workers within the electricity industry. Results from the study produced no associated health effects from ongoing, everyday exposures. According to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, another study conducted in England revealed a high incidence of leukemia disorders in children who lived less than 200 meters from power lines. Results from the study were deemed inconclusive as no actual measurements for electromagnetic emissions were taken.


Considerations


According to Harvard Health Publications, determinations on how far a home should be from high-voltage power lines have proved difficult for researchers to estimate due to all of the possible health outcomes involved and other unknown contributing factors. Possible health outcomes involve testing for all the potential disorders that can result from exposure to EMFs. Also, power line fluctuations throughout the day make it difficult to pinpoint a distance range when determining exposure levels and potential risk.

Parts Of A Handrail

A handrail's simple design can help help walkers make their way down stairways.


Handrails can provide assistance to walkers along interior or exterior stairs. If you plan to build your own handrail, or just want to learn the anatomy of a handrail, you will find the design fairly simplistic. Although handrails can differ in design and complexity, the most basic elements of a handrail are newel posts, spindles, battens and top caps. Does this Spark an idea?


Newel Posts


Newel posts provide most of the structural support for handrails. The newel posts are the only pieces of wood attached to both the handrail and the ground or support beam. Thus, the installer places the newel posts vertically at intervals along the handrail, where they hold the handrail system aloft.


Spindles


The spindles are the the vertical supports that span between the horizontal battens that run parallel to the rail. Spindles can come in a variety of shapes and designs. Indoor spindles in households are generally spun on a lathe to create a unique cylindrical design. Spindles provide secondary support and stability to the handrail.


Batten


Each segment of a handrail typically only includes two horizontal battens. The battens span between the newel posts and support the top cap of the handrail. The pair of battens provide structural integrity to the handrail.


Top Cap


The top cap is the portion of the handrail that comes in contact with one's hand. This horizontal piece of wood or metal, generally rounded for comfort when users grasp it, sits atop the highest batten.

Repair A Stihl Weed Eater

Keeping up the maintanence will reduce the need for most repairs.


Whether you're a homeowner or professional, if you own a Stihl weed eater, there will come a time when it breaks down. You have two options: take it to a repair shop, or fix it yourself. Most people don't like to pay someone else for repairs that can be accomplished with a few tools and a basic understanding of the mechanics of small engines. To start and run, these engines require only three basic things: spark, compression, and fuel. When making repairs, isolate the problem into one of these three components. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


Spark Repairs


1. Insert the flat-bladed tip of the screwdriver underneath the edge of the rubber boot covering the spark plug. Gently pop the rubber boot off the spark plug. Unscrew the spark plug and remove it from the engine.


2. Wearing a leather glove, put the new spark plug inside the rubber boot, holding it close to a metal point on the cylinder. Pull on the starter cord and check for a blue spark across the points. If there's no spark or it's a weak yellow, inspect the boot and wire for a loose connection.


3. Continue working back to the ignition module, looking for signs of a disconnected or damaged wire. Unscrew the cover over the "On/Off" switch. Disconnect the ground wire from the ignition switch. Repeat the spark plug test. If there's a spark, replace the ignition switch.


4. If there's still no spark, check the two lead wires and their connection with the switch and the starter. Replace any loose or damaged wires.


5. Unscrew the starter cover and remove it from the engine. Turn the flywheel by hand and inspect for any damage. Replace the flywheel if it's heavily worn or parts are sheared off. Take the trimmer to a mechanic for further ignition testing.


Compression Repairs


6. Set the choke to its closed position. Unhook the tab holding the air filter cover in place over the air filter. Remove the cover and pull out the air filter from its housing. With a rag, clean around the air filter housing and cover. Knock the air filter felt against a hard surface or replace if it's too dirty to clean.


7. Unscrew the muffler cover, which sits on the back right side of most Stihl trimmer engines, and pull out the spark arrester screen from inside the muffler. Scrub the screen clean with the brush and some soapy water. Replace the screen if it can't be cleaned well enough.


8. Inspect the exhaust port hole inside the muffler for any carbon clogs and heavy buildup. Inspect the muffler for any cracks or damage. Replace the muffler if it's damaged.


9. Unscrew the starter cover and remove it from the engine. Inspect the starter cord, pulley, and recoil spring for any damage. Replace these parts as necessary.


10. Take the engine to a mechanic to test it to see if it can hold compression.


Fuel Repairs


11. Drain the contents of the fuel tank into an approved fuel container. Wipe the inside of the tank with the brush and rag. Inspect the tank for any damage, holes or clogs.


12. Remove the air filter cover and air filter from the engine. With needle nose pliers, disconnect the main fuel line from the elbow connector on the carburetor. Pull the fuel filter and fuel line out through the hole in the gas tank. Throw both of them away.


13. Install the new fuel filter and fuel line, and fill the trimmer with fresh gas. If fuel problems still persist, take the engine to a mechanic to clean the carburetor.


Trimmer Head Repairs


14. Check the head and the shaft's connecting point to make sure there's no grass stopping the head from spinning. Depress the center knob and turn the cover in the direction of the arrow.


15. Remove the cover and inner spool from the trimmer head. Take off any remaining trimmer line. Wipe the cover and inner spool clean with the rag and inspect them for any cracks or damage. Replace as necessary.


16. Remove the inner spring from the spool head and make sure it still has tension. Clean inside the head and inspect for any loose bolts, cracks, or damage. Replace parts as necessary.

Prepare A Car Surface For Painting

Preparing the surface is the most important part of painting a car. From dent removal to rust repair, prep work must be done before you paint so your car will look as good as new. Here are some tips to help you prepare a car surface for painting.


Instructions


1. Fill in any dents first. If you can pull out the dent, try using a suction cup device like glass workers use. If you don't have access to that, lightly tap the dent from the backside to pop it out as much as possible. Fillers will be used to fill in the dents, and the smallest amount used is the best. Polyester filler is recommended over plastic filler. Fiberglass can be used to fill in larger dents. Apply the filler in thin coats, about 1/8 inch thick for each coat. Sand with very fine sandpaper before applying the next coat of filler. Examine the surface closely to look for any pinholes in the filler. If you see pinholes, add another coat of filler and sand the surface. Prep rust holes by sanding down to the bare metal and applying fiberglass filler. If the rust hole is too large, welding new metal to the surface is best. The metal prep work will take the longest, but is the most important part of painting your car.


2. Sand the prep work using long strokes and using increasingly finer sandpaper. Sand on an angle to prevent grooves in the car surface. Use a straight edge to judge the smoothness of the sanding and the curvature of the car. Continue to sand the prep work until the surface is totally smooth. If the rest of your car paint is in good condition, you don't need to sand it. However, if the paint job on your car is flaking or in bad shape, sand the rest of the car surface.


3. Apply a urethane primer that's considered "high build", sold at automotive specialty stores or online. High build primers don't shrink like other primers and will make your prep work and paint job look much more professional. High build primers also build up more, making it easier to sand and create even surfaces. Sand the primer after its hardened.


4. Use a sealer before painting the car. A sealer will help the new car paint adhere to the old paint and will keep the paint job looking smooth and uniform. If you're painting the whole car, apply the sealer to the whole car. Sealer can be found at automotive specialty stores or bought online.


5. Tape off all parts that you don't want to be painted and remove any decals. Tape off the glass, bumpers, door handles, etc. With the metal work done and the car prepped, you are now ready to paint.
