Measuring a window to replace cracked or broken glass panes is not a difficult job and can be successfully undertaken by just about anyone with good eyesight, a steady hand and a few basic tools. The key to success is to carefully remove the old glass and clean up of the window frame before measuring. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Start by removing the existing glass from the window. Wear leather work gloves to protect your hands and safety goggles to protect your eyes. Apply masking tape in a crisscross pattern across the glass on the inside and outside of the window. This will help to keep the glass from shattering into too many pieces. Cover the glass with sheets of newspaper, taping them securely on to the window and sash. When you break the glass the newspaper will catch any of the small shatter pieces created.


2. Tap the glass firmly with your rubber hammer until it breaks. The tape will hold most of the glass together. Carefully remove the newspaper and fold it around the loose pieces. Remove the larger pieces that remain lodged in the frame. Work the remaining smaller pieces back and forth with your hands until they are loose enough to remove. Use the hammer to knock out any stubborn pieces. You may need to pry some of the pieces out with a putty knife.


3. Use a putty knife to remove any old glazing or putty. For an accurate measurement it will be important to have a nice clean window frame. Old glazing is easier to remove when heated. A heating gun will help with this step.


4. Take two inside edge width measurements, one at the top and one at the bottom of the window frame. Take two inside edge length measurements, one at the left side and one at the right side of the window frame.


5. Draw a rough sketch of the window shape on a piece of paper and write down the smallest width and smallest length measurements. Subtract 1/8 inch from each measurement. This will allow for any expansion and contraction of the window frame. Take this information to your local hardware store and have the glass cut to size.

Take A Window Screen Out

Window screens keep out bugs when you want to let in a breeze. They end up blocking one side of the window glass, though, making it impossible to clean. The simple solution is to remove the screen. The mechanism holding the screen to the window will vary by window style, but the different models are all quick to remove, and most don't require any tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions


Basic Slider


1. Open the window all the way.


2. Look for two tabs or grips on the bottom of the screen.


3. Pull the tabs or grips straight up until the bottom of the screen pops out of the track.


4. Pull the screen inside slightly, and grab the edges of the screen.


5. Pull the screen down and inside to remove it from the top track.


Crank-Controlled


6. Look for posts around the frame. These are likely screwed into the window frame and have a plastic or metal tab extending over the frame of the screen to hold it onto the window frame.


7. Move the tabs. If you can rotate them off the screen frame, you'll be able to take the screen off the window.


8. Unscrew tight screws just enough to allow you to move the tabs away freely. As you move more tabs off the screen, get ready to catch them because the tabs are the only things holding the screen up.


Plunger Pins


9. Look around the inside of the screens frame for objects that look like pushpins.


10. Pull the pins horizontally toward the center of the screen.


11. Move the screen away from you slightly while still holding the pins.


12. Pull down once the screen is out of the bottom track. Bring the screen in when you've gotten the entire screen frame out of the window frame.


Double-Hung


13. Move the top screen to one side. You may have a difficult time gripping the edge because all the screen is still in the track.


14. Get a better grip on the screen's side as it moves out of the side track. Begin pushing out.


15. Move the screen out and toward the side you just removed. For example, if you pushed out the lower right corner and it is out of the track, push it out and lead it to the right. The whole screen should come free from the window frame.


16. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the bottom screen, except move the screen up a bit. This automatically removes it from the bottom track. Pull up once you've pushed one side of the screen out the window frame.

If you took out a loan to pay for the home improvement, you can deduct the cost of interest you paid on the loan, but only if the total of your mortgages and loans for home improvement are less than $500,000 ($1 million if filing a joint return).


Deductible Home Improvements--Medically Necessary Improvements


Medically necessary home improvements can be deducted as a medical expense. These include ramps and handicap-accessible doorways and bathrooms and can even include such things as a medically necessary pool. Basically, these improvements must be ordered by a doctor or be medically necessary -- anything above and beyond necessity will not be deductible, though the amount up to a necessary home improvement will be. That is, if a doctor requires you to swim in a pool every day and there are no pools nearby, but you need to install only a small pool, you can only deduct the costs of what is minimally necessary -- anything above that gets added onto the basis (the initial cost) of your house.


Energy Efficiency Tax Credits


A tax credit is available for home improvements that increase the energy efficiency of your house. An example of such a project is installing solar panels. Quick Fix A Leaking Water Pipe

It's something no one wants to think about, but unfortunately it happens. One of your water pipes suddenly springs a leak and you've got water spurting all over the place-what do you do?


First, don't panic. Stop the water coming out of the hole by turning off your main water supply valve. (It's usually located where the municipal water supply enters your home, near your water meter).


Now that you've got the water stopped-here are some quick fixes you can use to get your water flowing-while you work on a permanent fix. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions


Do Quick Fix Number 1


1. Stick the point of a pencil (or the tip of a sharpened wooden dowel) into the hole and break it off.


2. Wrap the pipe two or three inches around the hole with electrical tape and spread "Plumber's Goop" over the tape to prevent water from working its way through.


3. Allow the Goop about 1 hour to set up, then turn your water back on.

4. Wrap the pipe with a piece of thin rubber and hold it in place with electrical tape.


5. Place thin pieces of wood on each side of the pipe covering the hole and use "C" clamps to hold them tightly in place.

7. Cut a 6-inch piece of garden hose lengthwise and place it over the hole.

Repair Loose Tape On Drywall

Loose tape on drywall is just plain ugly and it will drive you crazy until it's fixed. Luckily, it's not a hard repair job for the do-it-yourself handyman. Instructions


1. Remove the loose tape by slipping the blade of your utility knife under it and gently pull. If the loose tape doesn't pull easily, slide the blade of the knife along the edges. Remove the whole section of loose tape; make sure you remove only the tape and not the paper backing of the drywall.


2. Clean the repair area with the blade of the putty knife to remove old drywall mud.


3. Mix the drywall mud according to manufacturers instructions.


4. Pick up the drywall mud with the putty knife and spread the mud on the repair area.


5. Embed the mesh tape into the drywall mud; make sure the tape stays straight and doesn't double over.


6. Apply another layer of drywall mud onto the top of the mesh tape to cover it; apply the mud so it is wider than the tape making the repair less noticeable.


7. Feather the edges of the drywall repair until no line is visible; use light pressure on the putty knife to diminish lines.


8. Sand the drywall repair when it has dried; reapply mud if necessary and sand again. Finish the repair project by painting or matching the finish of the room.

File A Lien On A House In Georgia

The state of Georgia has laws governing the issuance of liens.


A house or property lien is a secure interest in the rights to a property by a creditor. The state of Georgia allows for liens to be placed against a person's property, including their home, in certain situations.


Instructions


1. Qualify for a mechanic's lien. Georgia allows a wide range of workers to file a mechanic's lien against real property. To qualify for mechanic's lien, Georgia law requires a person to have contributed work, supplies or anything of value that added to a property. This includes work done by construction workers, laborers, suppliers, contractors and subcontractors, architects and anyone else aiding in the construction or renovation of the home.


2. Prepare the lien documents. The mechanic's lien must state that kind of work provided, the person or organization who provided the work, the amount in dispute, the location of the property, and the date on which the claim became due.


3. File the lien within the required time period. Georgia law requires that a mechanic's lien be filed within three months from the last day of work provided by the filer. If the party filing the lien is a supplier of materials, they must file within 30 days from the last date in which supplies were delivered. The lien must be filed at the county courthouse in which the property is located.


4. Send a notice to the property owner. At the time of filing, the claimant must send a copy of the lien to the owner of the property or their agent. This can be done via registered or certified mail, or personal service.


5. Make amendments. Georgia law allows for lien filers to make amendments to their claim, but the amendments must be filed in the same time period as the original lien. In other words, any amendments made must be filed within 30 days from the last day of work on the property.

3. Click on System Restore and check the box in front of Restore my Computer to Previous Date, then press Next.


4. Select a date prior to the day the virus was contracted. Click next.


5. Restart your computer when you receive a message that prompts you to do so.


6. Install an antivirus software and run a scan to make sure that the virus is no longer on your computer. If it is, or any other problems are detected, follow the software instructions for removal.

Drywall Repair Cost

You'll save money if you do your own repairs.


One good thing about drywall is how quickly it installs to provide a smooth flat wall for painting or wallpapering. The downside to drywall, however, is how easily it cracks when the foundation settles or how it breaks upon impact. Made from tightly compressed particles of gypsum, drywall is the standard material used in the construction of interior walls. The cost to repair damaged drywall depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can do the repairs yourself. Does this Spark an idea?


Small Cracks


Small hairline cracks in drywall are common, and they usually appear above doors and windows where the wall framing is the weakest. If the crack is less than 1/4-inch wide, you can repair it with minimal expense. You'll need a small plastic putty knife, spackling and a drywall-sanding pad to smooth the spackle into the crack and sand the drywall when dry. Materials and supplies to fix a small crack will run around or under $15 as of 2011. Paint will be an extra expense.


Larger Cracks and Holes


Larger cracks and holes are more expensive to repair because you'll have to remove the section of damaged drywall and install a new piece. Drywall panels sell in 4-by-8-foot sheets and in varying thicknesses. As of 2011, a 1/2-inch thick drywall panel costs approximately $7. You'll also need drywall nails or screws, joint compound, drywall-taping knife and joint compound.


Water Damage


Water damage to drywall creates a brownish stain that can bleed through paint to discolor the wall. The first thing to do is fix the water leak and then assess the extent of the damage. If the drywall is still flat, showing no bulging, you can apply one or more coats of stain blocking sealer and then repaint the wall. A typical gallon of sealer costs around $21. If the surface of the wall isn't smooth, however, treat the damage in the same manner you would a large crack or hole, by cutting out and replacing the damaged section.


Labor


Labor charges are the biggest cost when repairing drywall. Always ask for an estimate before hiring a contractor to fix the damage. Unlike some construction repairs, a drywall contractor may have to make three or more trips to your home during the repair process, which adds substantially to the cost of repairs. The contractor will apply joint compound to the seams surrounding the new section of drywall, but the compound must dry completely before the contractor can sand it and apply two or more thin coats to the seams. If your contractor charges a set fee every time he visits your home and then an hourly fee afterward, the cost can add up quickly. Labor charges vary widely depending upon the skill of the contractor and the demand for contractors in your area.

Repair Spalling Concrete Block Basement Walls

Spalling is a surface damage on concrete or concrete block structures. It can be caused by fire damage, freezing and thawing cycles or moisture-damaged rebar. Spalling walls may be flaky or chipping, and may even have minor holes or voids on the surface. Fortunately, spalling is primarily associated with cosmetic damage, and is not a sign of structural problems within the wall. 1. Remove loose or flaking concrete. Brush the spalling area with a stiff wire brush to help remove some loose material. Scrape away any additional loose concrete using a paint scraper, or hammer it out with a chisel.


2. Repair holes or voids. Mix epoxy concrete filler according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use the epoxy to fill holes or voids in the wall, then smooth them with a trowel so they are even with the rest of the surface. Allow the patched area to dry for 2 to 3 hours before proceeding.


3. Use a lime-based mortar mix to cover the walls. The mortar will be applied like plaster to give the block a smooth finish, and is commonly known as "parging." It will also help prevent future spalling. Lime-based mortar is fairly permeable, and will allow the block to breathe. Traditional cement mortar is not permeable, and will trap water in the concrete. This will cause future damage that can lead to structural problems with your block wall.


4. Blend your mortar mix with water according to the directions on the package. Use a drill with a paddle bit to stir the mixture thoroughly in a bucket or wheelbarrow.


5. Apply the mortar to the block wall using a trowel. Keep the application about 3/8" thick, but don't worry about texture or appearance at this point. Wait until the mortar starts to harden, then use a stucco or plasterer's rake to scratch lines in the surface of the mortar. These grooves will help hold the final coat of mortar in place.


6. Mix and apply a second coat of lime-based mortar. This coat should be roughly 1/4" thick. You can create a smooth or textured finish using your trowel and a putty knife, though it may take a bit of experimenting to get the wall truly smooth.

3. Install the sheetrock. First, place the sheetrock into position, then attach it with drywall screws. If your home has wood studs, use coarse-threaded drywall screws. If your home has metal studs, use fine-threaded drywall screws. Use a screw gun to install the screws every six to eight inches along the length of every stud.


4. Use joint compound and paper drywall tape to finish the patch. Apply joint compound and a piece of tape over each seam. Wipe each joint smooth with a six-inch drywall knife. Also, coat over the heads of the drywall screws to fill them.


5. Use a 12-inch drywall knife to cover the patch with joint compound. Apply a generous amount over the entire area, then wipe some of it away. The goal is to wipe off just enough to leave the area smooth.


6. Sand the patch with drywall sanding paper after the joint compound dries. Use 100-grit drywall sandpaper. If the repairs look rough, repeat the coating process.


7. Paint the repair area when the patch is smooth. Use drywall primer first. Then apply several coats of interior paint.

Mechanical Control


Band trees with commercially available sticky traps designed to catch female cankerworm moths. Place traps according to package directions. The female becomes entangled as she climbs the tree seeking a mate.The female cankerworm moth is flightless, so the band can eliminate the breeding population entirely over a period of time.


Biological Control


In the window of time between the hatching of cankerworm eggs and when they reach 1 inch in length, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is an effective control method applied using a pressurized sprayer. For continual control, egg parasites are effective. Egg parasite Telenomus alsophilae and the wasps Trichogramma minutum and Euplectrus mellipes consume eggs of the cankerworm. Hang cards containing egg parasite eggs near where infestations have been seen. Repeat every seven to 10 days until infestations begin to subside.


Horticultural Oil


A 2 to 3 percent dormant oil is effective against spring cankerworm eggs. Apply it to eggs before they hatch using a horticultural sprayer, being especially careful if the trees are active. A thorough drenching is necessary to eliminate all eggs, as some could be wedged in small crevasses.


Insecticide


Several insecticides can be used against cankerworms, but they also destroy any natural predators. Insecticides are considered a treatment of last resort since a decrease in natural predation can have long-term effects on cankerworm populations. Apply insecticide once all the eggs have hatched and cankerworms are visible. Broad-spectrum insecticides such as carbaryl and spinosad are both effective and readily available.

Repair Small Drywall Holes

Repairing Nail-sized Drywall Holes


1. Lightly tap the drywall surrounding the small hole with the butt end of a 6-inch spackling blade to create an indentation.


2. Apply a thin layer of joint compound to the recess created in Step 1 with a 6-inch spackling blade. Feather the wet joint compound into the surrounding drywall to reduce both the amount of finish sanding required and the chances of cracks forming in the applied compound.


3. Allow the joint compound to dry until solid white (roughly 24 hours).


4. Sand the dried joint compound with a sanding pad until smooth and well blended with the drywall surrounding the repair area.


Repairing Small Drywall Holes


5. Cut a square hole around the small hole with a keyhole saw. Make sure any loose paper surrounding the small hole is removed.


6. Draw a square hole, slightly larger than the repair hole, on a small piece of drywall with a pencil.


7. Cut along the pencil lines with the blade of a utility knife to score the paper covering the drywall.


8. Pull the scored square from the small piece of drywall. Pry one corner of the paper away from the gypsum with the blade of a utility knife if the paper is difficult to remove.


9. Trim the rough cut paper to a size slightly smaller than the square hole cut in the wall with a pair of scissors.


10. Apply a thick layer of joint compound to the hole cut in the drywall and the backside of the paper square with a 6-inch spackling blade.


11. Press the joint compound coated side of the paper into the drywall hole. Do not use excess pressure or the paper will fall into the hole.


12. Drag the 6-inch spackling blade over the paper to remove excess joint compound from the repair. Allow the repair to dry for 24 hours.


13. Lightly sand the dried repair with a sanding pad.


14. Apply joint compound to the repair area with a 10-inch spackling blade. The thinner the coating the less work required to complete the repair.


15. Allow the joint compound to dry to a white material before continuing to the next step.


16. Sand the repair area with a sanding pad to blend the repair to the finished wall and complete the repairing of the small drywall hole.

4. Put in the tidbits. The important features, relevant information, stuff your customer would want to know. This should be smaller, but still readable, and still adhering to the rule of conciseness. Bullet points and lists are always a good bet, while paragraphs are not. And if you ever find yourself using semicolons, alarm bells should go off immediately.


5. End with specific instructions on how the customer should respond to the ad, e.g., "call this number" or "click here to order now!" You don't want your carefully crafted advertising strategy to go to waste just because your customer couldn't figure out respond.


6. Revise. Test. Truth is, you can never really know whether or not something will work for sure until you try it. So give things a shot, and if they don't seem to be working out, go back and revamp your advertising technique!

Senior Caregiver Grants

The federal government administers several grant programs to inform and counsel senior caregivers. Funds are disbursed, not to individuals, but through state and local agencies and other organizations. A community foundation dispenses grants to eligible organizations as well. Categories range from programs that give temporary respite for caregivers who need a break from their responsibilities to those that teach caregivers cope with seniors who need to stop driving due to dementia.


National Family Caregiver Support Program


The National Family Caregiver Support Program gives grants to 640 local agencies on aging nationwide to offer families who are taking care of the elderly training counseling, information, referrals and respite care.


Lifespan Respite Care Program


This program is designed to provide support to caregivers of disabled family members of any age covers short-term placement of senior citizens in suitable facilities or home care so that family members can engage in family activities or take a break from their care-giving duties.


Home and Community Based Services Program


This Health and Human Services-administered program funnels funding through local agencies on aging for transportation services, participation in adult day programs and home care.


National Highway Transportation Safety Administration


This agency announced in February 2010 that it would disburse funding to organizations to educate caregivers' awareness of the dangers elderly people with dementia pose as drivers, to develop and promote tools they can use to address the issue. Nonprofit organizations, private higher education institutions and organizations that can do national outreach and are not connected to for-profit entities are eligible to apply.


Weinberg Administration


This nonprofit foundation provides grants to support direct service organizations located, for the most part, in Maryland, Hawaii, northeastern Pennsylvania, New York and Israel and the former Soviet Union. Grants are made to support residential care, community-based facilities, general operating programs, housing construction and informal care-giving support, the Weinberg Foundation Web site explains

Sewing is one of the oldest human art forms. In the past, humans stitched together animal skins for clothing in order to protect themselves from harsh weather and to cover themselves. Today, a seamstress is a woman who sews garments, such as costumes, or mends clothing in order to make them wearable again. Starting your own seamstress business can be done with the proper experience, materials and skills.

1. Realize what a seamstress business requires. A successful seamstress business requires someone who is passionate about and enjoys sewing. As a seamstress, you need to know hem pants, skirts and dresses, and fix buttons, zippers, snaps and waistbands. Consider the cost of materials and the time you will spend on a product when discussing prices with customers.


9. Market your services. Network with companies such as clothing stores in order to have your business recommended by a company to its clients. Place advertisements in phone books, online, in newspapers or in magazines if possible.

Repair Septic System Problems

Drain lines that are buried in the yard can become plugged


Homes that are not connected to city sewers will have septic tanks that are buried in a backyard in order to dispose of waste water. Proper maintenance ensures that septic systems work properly. This includes troubleshooting when issues or problems arise. Problems with a plumbing and septic tank include backup of sewage and house drains that do not work. Does this Spark an idea?

1. Check the pumps for the septic system, and verify that they are working correctly. If a pump has failed, sewage can back up into the house.


2. Determine if tree roots have gotten into the drain lines and plugged or clogged the pipes. Dig up the drain pipe where it runs into the drainage field with a shovel. Examine the drain line, and see if there are any roots penetrating the pipe.


3. Dig up the section of yard, with a shovel, where the septic tank is located to expose the tank lid. Open the lid and see if the septic tank is full. Clean the septic tank to allow sewage to flow out of the house.


4. Stop using the garbage disposal, if one is connected to the sink. Debris from the garbage disposal can add to a plugged drain line and compound a drain problem.


5. Check the vent stack that is on the roof to make sure it is not blocked with debris, which can prevent air from coming into the system. Remove any blockage from the vent stack to correct the problem.


6. Examine the drain pipes that are running out of the house for leaking connections. You may also need to dig up the drain tile running to the drain field and see if the pipe has collapsed. Replace any section of bad pipe to correct the problem.

Repair Septic Systems

Standing water in yard is a sign of a problem in the septic system.


Residential septic systems operate on the same principal as municipal sewer systems, just on a smaller scale. It is best to properly maintain your system to avoid any costly and potentially nasty repairs. Fortunately, when problems do develop, there are only a limited number of areas to check for repairs or corrections. Your system consists of three components: the septic tank, the distribution box and the field lines. When trouble arises, it will be in one of these components. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Pump out the septic tank. If you are getting sewage back-up into your home or have standing water in the area of the tank, it is most probably full of sludge. On average, a septic tank will need to be pumped out every three to five years and will cost between $350 and $500. If the tank interior is 30 percent or more filled with sludge, it will need to be emptied.


2. Check the distribution box. Standing water in the area of a single branch of the field line, or around the distribution box is an indication of a clog or other problem. This box has a single intake from the septic tank, and an outlet to each of the field lines. If the box is clogged or unlevel, the waste water will not be evenly distributed to all the field lines and will overwhelm a single line or stop working entirely. Clear any clogs and re-level the box if needed.


3. Clear the pipes of roots and/or clogs. Roots are the enemy of your septic system. Never plant or allow trees or shrubs to grow over any portion of your system. If roots infiltrate your piping, you will need to use a sewer router to remove them. This device has a set of blades attached to a long spinning cable. Open the access port in order to insert the cable into the piping. Slowly feed the router cable into the pipe and allow it to cut through the roots or clog.


4. Add an access port. If your system does not have an access port, you will need to dig down to the pipe and cut into the pipe itself. If this is the case, it is highly recommended you take this opportunity to install an access port for future needs. Install the access port so the 50-foot cable on the router can reach the entire system. For example, if you have a 100-foot stretch of pipe, the access should be at the 50-foot mark. If you have more than 100 feet of pipe, you will need multiple access ports.


5. Restart your system. If your septic system has stopped processing waste materials, it is possible the bacteria in the tank have died. A common cause of this is allowing chemicals such as gasoline, paint thinner or drain opener to enter the system. If this is the case, have the tank pumped out. The waste material entering the tank naturally contains the bacteria needed to break it down. These bacteria will flourish and grow in the low-oxygen environment of the septic tank once the chemicals are removed.

1. Measure the length and width of the mobile home with a tape measure. If necessary, write the measurements down so you don't forget them.


2. Multiply the length and width together to get the total area of the mobile home. For example, if the mobile home is 15 feet wide and 80 feet long, multiply 15 by 80 to get 1,200. This means the total area of a mobile home of this size is 1,200 square feet.


3. Compare the square footage to the Energy Star central air unit BTU chart to determine the best size for your mobile home. Some mobile home sizes may fit into two different air conditioner BTU categories; for example, a 1,000-square-foot home can use either an 18,000 or 21,000 BTU air unit. In such cases, consider other factors, such as the amount of sunlight that hits the mobile home throughout the day, to determine which size is best. For example, if the mobile home is heavily shaded, the necessary BTUs can be decreased by 10 percent, so the smaller size would be the better choice.

Repair Sears Riding Lawn Mower Brakes

Repair the brakes on your Sears rider.


When you are driving your Sears riding lawn mower and you suddenly see an obstruction in your path and need to stop, you need to have dependable brakes. Sears riding lawn mower brakes are supposed to be able to stop the lawn mower within one full length of the rider. The brakes work on the rear axle like a hand grabbing a rotating shaft. Over time the brake can become loose and not be as responsive, but you can repair it with a few tools yourself. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Park your Sears riding lawn mower on a level spot. Shut off the rider. Push in the brake pedal all the way and engage the parking brake handle.


2. Lay under the rear axle of the Sears rider. Find the braking system near the center of the axle. The braking arm has a cable leading to it from the brake pedal. The braking arm has a "jam nut" on the end of the 2-inch brake rod on the end of the braking arm.


3. Use the tape measure to check the distance between the brake arm and the jam nut. Over time it may loosen to the full 2 inches of the brake rod, but it needs to be near 1 9/16 of an inch to properly stop the rider.


4. Rotate the jam nut tighter with the proper sized wrench until it is set to the proper distance of 1 9/16 inches.

Replace Caulking On The Outside Of Your House

Caulk and other sealants safeguard your house against rain and snow at vulnerable points such as cracks and open joints, wherever flashing and other approaches can't do the job. Sealing joints around windows and doors


1. Scrape out old caulk using a painter's five-in-one tool, a stiff putty knife or another similar tool.


2. Use a putty knife to scrape off any caulk that remains on the surface or walls of the joint.


3. For very dry, stubborn caulk, use a caulk softening and removal chemical, such as 3M Caulk Remover, as directed by the manufacturer.


4. Allow the cleaned joint to dry for a day or more unless the product is approved for wet applications.


5. Press an open-cell foam backer rod into joints wider than 1/4 inch (6 mm) or deeper than 1/2 inch (12 mm) so the joint is about half as deep as it is wide. Never fill a deep joint. Doing so wastes caulk and makes a good, permanent bond less likely.


6. To avoid getting caulk on adjacent surfaces, apply painter's masking tape. While this may not be practical for large areas, it's an option for highly visible areas or for surfaces that caulk might ruin.


7. Cut about 3/8 inch (1 cm) off the caulking cartridge's nozzle at a 45-degree angle with a utility knife. The goal is to get a hole 3/16 inch (5 mm) across to produce a bead of that diameter.


8. Press the caulk into the joint, adjusting both the rate of application and the amount of pressure to apply enough caulk so you slightly overfill the joint. Some experts say it's better to push rather than pull, but you can achieve excellent results either way.


9. Smooth the joint with a wetted fingertip or smoothing tool.


Sealing joints in other locations


10. For masonry chimney and siding joints, always use backer rods and choose a caulk that is designed to adhere to masonry and that matches the color of the cement grout. Mask the chimney; caulk won't easily come off porous surfaces.


11. For horizontal joints between a house and concrete slabs, such as those in a patio, walk or driveway, always use a backer rod. Self-leveling polyurethane sealants, although very messy to work with, offer superior protection.


12. For joints between a foundation and the wall above it, use expanding foam. The gap here is often too difficult to access with the tip of a caulking tube. The foam expands to fill the gap and better seal against air infiltration and pests.


Caulking tips


13. If you plan to paint, use paintable caulk. Paint does not bond well to silicone caulk.


14. Caulk may not adhere to paint or stain that contains wax, stearate, silicone, or paraffin-based oil. Verify the compatibility of your caulk and paint.


15. Caulk bonds best when gaps are between 3/16 inch (5 mm) and 1/2 inch (12 mm) wide, when they are as half as deep as they are wide, and when the caulk adheres only to the joint walls (not to the bottom or rear surface).


16. Do not caulk the joints between aluminum or plastic siding and windows or doors. The channels provide the necessary seal.


17.Clear silicone caulk does not bond well with unfinished cedar siding, shingles and trim. Use a copolymer rubber-based clear sealant, such as Lexel (available from Sashco Sealants, www.sashcosealants.com).


18. The primary purpose of exterior caulk is to keep water out. Caulking for energy efficiency also requires that you seal wall penetrations indoors.


19. Caulking guns with a thumb-activated quick-release trigger are easier and less messy to use.


20. Caulking guns with an open frame are easier to keep clean than the partially enclosed type.


21. Ideally, the hole in the tip of the caulk tube should be as wide as the gap you're filling. A smaller hole is OK but slower; a larger one makes a mess.


22. Wrap the end of a partially used caulking tube in plastic and secure it with a rubber band to prevent caulk from drying out in the nozzle.

Illinois Home Grants

The State of Illinois Offers Many Opportunities for Homebuyers


Whether you're buying a home or already own one, government financial assistance is often appreciated. People with lower incomes may find it difficult to purchase or repair their homes without financial assistance beyond loans. Residents of Illinois have a few options available. Some assistance is offered in the form of grants that can be used for first time home purchases or targeted home improvements.


Illinois Housing Development Authority Grants


Grants can help fund the dream of homeownership by offsetting down payment and closing costs.


Illinois Housing Development Authority Grants is the primary provider of housing grants within the state. Although the grants are issues by the IHDA, they must be applied for through the local Community Housing Development Organizations (ChoDOS). The grants that are available are for amounts of up to $5,000. They are meant to help with down payments or to defray some of the closing costs of the purchase. A list of ChoDOs can be found on the Housing Authority website, along with details about apply for the program. The IHDA also has two other primary programs for home buyers. These are the I-LOAN Mortgage program and the I-LOAN Certificate.


Single Family Rural Housing Grants


There are a few different grant options that are designed specifically for those who live in rural areas of the state. These grants are available through the USDA's program, which is called Home Improvement Repair Loans and Grants. This is primarily a loan program, but grants are available for those with financial need. If improvements must be made to a home for safety reasons or to help accommodate a disability, people over the age of 62 and unable to pay back a loan with 1 percent interest may be eligible for the grant program.


Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Grants


Weatherization can mean lower utility bills.


This is a program that was put into place to assist people in low income households in paying for home improvements that will reduce their utility costs. Income eligibility is set on a sliding scale according to the size of the household. These grants allow qualified homeowners to undertake home improvements that will significantly reduce heat and energy loss, such as improving insulation in walls and attics, repairing and replacing furnaces, and sealing air leaks. The amount of funding available is based on the type of home, with grants up to $7,500 available in some cases.
