Price Handyman Jobs

Establishing the fee to charge for services is one of the most challenging duties for a small business operator doing handyman work. The business has fixed costs for operation that need to be met, and fees must cover the costs in a manner that makes the service competitive in the local marketplace. Customers want quality service for a fair price, so a rate schedule that meets both customer expectations and business costs is a delicate balance that requires some research.

Instructions

1. Make a list of the services to be provided. Be realistic about skills and list only the services that can be done well in a reasonable amount of time.

2. Determine the average amount of time required to complete the services on the list. Place this time next to each of the services.

3. Determine the average pay per hour for skilled professionals in the area. If the service is to be done by a union member, contact the professional association to determine the minimum fee schedule. If the handyman is not a member of a union, collect classified advertisements from local newspapers and free newspapers. Scan professional service advertisements for prices from online sources such as Craig's List and local newspaper websites.

4. Assess the job list and note work that requires an assistant or helper. Determine the amount to be paid for these services.

5. Determine the amount of pay to be billed for each hour of work. Be realistic, using the local economic conditions to assist in setting an hourly wage.

6. Design a price list that includes the services and the fee that will be charged. This should be laid out with a pleasing graphic design that can be used with clients.

7. Design a separate price list that includes the parts necessary to complete the services offered. Incorporate travel time and gasoline costs into the price of the parts and place the price of the required parts in a column next to the item.

Report At&T Dsl Outages

DSL Internet service relies on phone lines.

AT&T is a major communications company that provides many services, including DSL Internet service. DSL is an Internet service that provides a much faster network connection than a standard dial-up connection. However, even though DSL is significantly faster than dial-up, it still uses regular telephone lines to send data. Therefore, service interruptions can occur when telephone lines are damaged or broken. You can report DSL outages to AT&T so that AT&T can fix the outage as quickly as possible.

Instructions

1. Call AT&Ts DSL outage hotline. The phone number is 877-937-5288. This is a toll-free number.

2. Listen to the menu prompts. Press "3" on your phone's keypad to enter the "Technical Assistance" menu.

3. Allow the "Technical Assistance" to play. Press "2" to report an outage of DSL service.

4. Wait for the service to connect you to the correct customer support agent. The phone will ring when trying to connect you to a support agent.

5. Report the outage to the customer service agent. The agent will ask you for the zip code of the outage. Provide the agent with all information she requests.

Requirements For New Jersey Auto Inspection

New Jersey has strict vehicle emissions standards.

You live in New Jersey, and perhaps you have replaced your old clunker with a newer model automobile. By state law, you must have the car inspected every other year or you will be subject to a stiff fine or jail time. New Jersey has a number of inspection sites throughout the state as well as locations run by private contractors. The purpose of inspection is to make sure that the basics of your car are in working order.

Emissions

Because New Jersey is trying to meet compliance terms of the 1990 National Clear Air Act, the state has adopted the stringent motor vehicle emission standards of the State of California, a change that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2009. If your vehicle is new, regardless of whether you bought it in New Jersey or out-of-state, it will be issued a one-time four-year sticker if it passes the emissions as well as other tests. Otherwise, you must return to an inspection facility every two years. If it fails the emissions test, you must make the necessary repairs within 30 days, then return to the inspection station.

Windshield, Lights And Brakes

All of these must be in good working order for your vehicle to pass the New Jersey inspection. First, your windshield must not be cracked and it must be unobstructed. The windshield wipers must work and give you a clear view of the road. The state emphasizes the importance of the lights on your vehicle, so it won't pass muster unless the headlights work along with the high-beams, the turn indicators, parking and tail lights. Of particular importance is the light that illuminates the license plate, because police officers must be able to see it. Finally, your car's brakes and emergency brake must be in good working order for the vehicle to pass.

Other Considerations

The inspector looks for other things, as well. For instance, you license plate should be securely affixed to your car and the gas cap has to remain tight so that gasoline fumes do not foul the air. In addition, your car must have a working horn and the tires should not show excessive wear. If your automobile fails for any reason, you can return to the inspection station after you have seen to the repairs; and in most cases, you are not required to have the car totally reinspected. You'll simply need to show that the repairs have been made.

Timing

Motorists are responsible for knowing when to have their vehicles reinspected. The inspections must occur within two months of the due date on the inspection sticker attached to the car's windshield. Note that vehicle registration dates and inspection dates can differ.

Replace A Car Spring Loaded Seat Belt Retractor

Automobiles these days are equipped with a standard three-point shoulder/lap belt. These belts are made of materials or mechanical parts that can become worn. Normal wear and tear through everyday use or exposure to extreme temperatures can cause seat belt damage. If your seat belt is not operating correctly, it could be something as simple as a twist in the belt or the belt itself may be dirty. If, upon inspection, you find neither of these issues to be the case, the seat belt retractor could be broken and should be replaced. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

1. Extend the seat belt to check for twists or kinks.

2. Remove the bolts holding the seat and the seat itself for easier access to inspect the seat belt, if you need to.

3. Remove the interior panels.

4. Remove the bolt from beneath the retractor.

5. Pull the seat belt all the way out; hold the retractor straight up to move the belt out.

6. Push some of the belt out of the other side; use a screwdriver to pull out the loop, if one is present.

7. Remove the bar, if present, to release the seat belt from the retractor.

8. Thread the seat belt into the new retractor.

9. Reinstall the bar, if necessary; test the seat belt for correct operation.

10. Retract the belt fully if everything is working properly.

11. Reattach the panels and the bolts.

12. Replace any mounting bolts or other worn out parts that may be present.

13. Reinstall the seat, if necessary.

Replace Windows In A Mobile Home

If you own a mobile home, you can perform many repair projects yourself at low cost and replace worn out items with only a little time and effort. If you need to replace exterior windows on your manufactured home, follow this basic routine to ensure that your new windows fit as snugly as the old ones. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Check your mobile home windows to determine if you need to replace or repair them. If bad weather or general wear and tear have comprised the window to the point where it constantly lets rain and cold air inside, choose a replacement window instead of repair.

2. Take out the old window and measure it. Make sure that the window opening has a perfect square shape. If it's a little off, you can buy shims to ensure that the new window fits. Make the opening larger and buy a larger window if the space has changed size significantly since the first window installation, or downsize the opening and fit a smaller window.

3. Assemble your repair items. Use the correct size screws, putty, a screwdriver, sealant and a drill. Ask the salesperson at the home supply store about any special installation requirements for the window. Remove any siding around the window before you begin, being careful not to bend aluminum.

4. Remove the old mobile home window. Use a drill to take out the old screws, then carefully detach the frame and window. Scrub away old putty tape and put new tape around the frame. Putty tape covers gaps if you have vertical siding and you can use two rows of it for extra padding.

5. Place half the screws in the window frame, then check to see that it's square before continuing. Place and tighten the rest of the screws, then put sealant around the window top at the point where it touches the siding. Replace the siding you removed and you'll have a more comfortable, draft free mobile home.

Repair A Projection Tv

Having a professional repair your projection TV can be a stressful and costly process. Many TV repair centers will charge you just for an estimate! If you're looking to save time and money, follow these steps to repair your projection TV.

Instructions

1. Consult your TV's troubleshooting guide. Follow its recommended steps. Most problems can be fixed by troubleshooting.

2. Diagnose what's wrong with your TV. There are many TV repair tip websites on the Internet you can consult, like the "Notes on the Troubleshooting and Repair of Television Sets" website (see Resources below). Or, try asking a TV repair question on an online message board like AllExperts.com (see Resources below). You can also find books on troubleshooting projection TV's. Check your local library or bookstore for a book like "Complete Projection TV Troubleshooting and Repair."

3. Get your TV's service manual to find a diagram of your TV's circuits. You can get a service manual through a retailer that sells your TV brand or through an online store like tvdiagrams.com (see Resources below).

4. Gather the necessary tools. For most projections TVs you'll need a Phillips head and a flathead screwdriver to remove the back shell. You may also need a digital multimeter to test the circuits.

5. Know the common problems and fixes for a projection TV. Below are a few common problems that people come across when a projection TV goes on the fritz.

• Blurred, snowy picture: Turn on your projection TV and wiggle the coax cable from your cable box or antenna where it connects to the TV. If the picture fluctuates, you know that you have a loose connection, or that the coax cable is bad.

• Blotches of color on the screen: Caused when your projection TV becomes magnetized. Use a strong magnetic coil and make circular motions around your projection TV screen starting on the upper left corner. Increase the size of the circles you're making until you've covered the entire screen. Slowly move away from the screen; continuing to make circular motions with the magnet. When the magnet loses contact, the color blotches should be gone.

• TV shuts off randomly: It's usually caused by overheating. Remove any heat-emitting objects or anything that may be insulating the TV and causing it to overheat.

• Speaker emits static: Follow the remaining steps to replace a speaker.

6. Unplug your TV's power cord from the electrical outlet and disconnect any peripheral devices like a DVD player or cable box. Place your television screen-down on a soft surface.

7. Remove the screws that connect the back shell to the rest of the TV. Then pull the shell up and off the TV carefully. Set it aside.

8. Consult your TV's service manual to find the part that you need to replace or repair.

9. Place the shell back on the TV once your repairs are finished. Replace each screw to secure the shell to the TV.

10. Plug your power cord back into the electrical outlet and test your TV. If your repairs weren't successful, it may be time to consult a professional.

Diy Delta Tub Faucet Repair

A Delta tub faucet will leak after prolonged use, and if you do not want to pay for a plumber to fix it, installing a new cartridge should solve the problem. Leaking faucets contribute to water stains and sometimes water damage if the surrounding wall board is affected by water. This leads to rot or mold, so fixing the problem is a priority. The skills required are basic, and the entire process takes about half an hour. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Turn off the incoming water supply by closing the main water valve to your home.

2. Take off the small cap on the faucet handle by prying it up with a knife or small screwdriver. Remove the screw on top of the faucet with either an Allen wrench or a Phillips head screwdriver. Some models have Allen head screws, while others use a Phillips head.

3. Slide the handle off the faucet stem. Remove the retainer clips around the cartridge on the faucet with needle-nose pliers, if clips are present. If the faucet does not have clips, remove the bonnet and dome cap by twisting them to the left with adjustable pliers. Not all Deltas have these parts, so it will depend on your model. You should be left with just the cartridge after this step.

4. Pull the cartridge out of the faucet, using the needle-nose pliers if necessary. Remove the seat gaskets inside the faucet with a small screwdriver. Replace the seat gaskets, then install a new cartridge into the faucet head by lining up the grooves on the side of the cartridge with those on the faucet head.

5. Replace the retainer clip or dome and bonnet cap, and tighten them by hand. Slide the handle back on the stem. Thread the screw into the handle, and tighten it to secure the handle to the stem.

Fix Stereo Speakers

All speakers are fragile, and will break when misused.

If you are having problems with your stereo's speakers, there are a number of reasons why the speaker might be misbehaving. Although each issue has a possible solution, be aware that there is a certain point where a broken speaker simply needs to be replaced, either because it is simply not possible to repair, or in some cases too expensive to fix. Before you spend two or three hundred dollars on a new set of speakers, however, here are a few diagnostic checks you can perform to see if your problem is repairable.

Instructions

Speaker Problems

1. Crossed polarities can affect sound quality, but won't cause the stereo to completely shut down.

Unscrew the back paneling that houses your speakers, exposing the ports where the speaker's wiring connects to the stereo. With each speaker, there should be two wire ports: one positive (labeled with a black "+"), and one negative (labeled with a red "-"). Make sure that the negative side of the speaker is connected via the speaker cable to the negative port of the stereo, and the positive side of the speaker is connected to the positive port of the stereo. A reversed polarity such as this can cause your speakers to lack the resonance and clarity that it should have.

2. Unscrew the front cage of the speaker which covers the speaker's face (these are typically designed with holes or vents to allow the sound through). Check to see if the cup of your speaker is torn by running your finger along the outer rim of the speaker. Particularly with cheap paper cupped speakers, it is possible for this rim to tear simply from turning the stereo up too loud. You can temporarily fix a tear such as this by covering the tear with duct tape or other strong adhesive tape, but it is best to simply replace the speaker if you find that its cup is blown, because any tear will cause excessive rattling when you use the stereo.

3. Traditional speakers are conically shaped, as seen here.

Remove the screws which hold the speaker in its housing (this shouldn't be too difficult if you have already removed the front and back paneling, as in steps one and two). From the back of the speaker, you should be able to see a conical shaped flexible cone made of durable paper or Kevlar. Check for any visible tears in the cone of the speaker. As with blown cups, it is possible to repair a tear in the cone with duct tape, but it is still best to simply replace the speaker once it is blown at the cup to prevent any excessive rattling when using your stereo.

Stereo Problems

4. Expose the back of your stereo by removing anything that might be blocking it from view, and locate all of the speaker wiring running from the stereo to your speakers. Check every pair of wires coming from each speaker to make sure that each speaker is connected to only one port (rather than a positive from one speaker connected to a positive for another speaker at the stereo's port). Crossing wires such as this is can cause your speakers to be completely nonfunctional, so be sure that the wiring is correct.

5. Exposed wires can cause the stereo to shut down entirely.

Check for any exposed wiring in the back of the stereo that could be shorting out your stereo. A loose speaker wire or power cable that is touching anything metal can cause the stereo to shut down entirely, and make it seem as if your stereo is completely broken, when in fact the solution is just one wire.

6. Remove the fuse from behind the stereo; the fuse should be a plastic colored tab, usually red, green, or yellow. Once you have removed the fuse, check to see if its connection is blown by looking for any fractures in the fuse. If you do have a blown fuse, you should replace the fuse with a replacement fuse of the appropriate power (usually clearly indicated on the old fuse). New fuses shouldn't cost more than two or three dollars at an electronics store.

What Do To Sell My House Faster

Selling a home can be a long process if your home is not appealing to potential buyers. Although your home may be a perfect fit, the buyer can see small mistakes that will turn them off. A house that needs to be sold quickly should always be neat and clean, as well as neutralized to appeal to a variety of buyers. Neutralizing a room also means painting over brightly painted walls, as not everyone wants flashy colors or decor.

Finish All Repairs

A home that requires repairs and small fixes can turn off a potential buyer because those are seen as extra maintenance that the new owner has to worry about. Complete all necessary and overdue repairs, such as leaking water pipes, dripping faucets, squeaky doors and damaged trim.

Get a Pre-sale Inspection

A pre-sale inspection can be done by a licensed home inspector, and notifies you of any structural damage, termite infestation or other major problems that would turn off buyers. Display the inspection report on the kitchen counter during showings so interested buyers see that the home has nothing to hide. It will appeal to interested buyers that all issues are taken care of and that the home has no major problems that would worry them or cost additional money to repair.

Clean Up Clutter

Every room of the house should be ready to show, even guest rooms and other spaces that are not used in your daily life. The house should be clean for every showing, ashtrays emptied and the kitchen area cleaned of dishes and food. Each room should be staged with a purpose, such as having a desk and a bookshelf in the home office. Unnecessary items such as stacks of documents and papers should be taken out of the office, as it may appear that the room is too small to be functional.

Neutralizing Space

Making the house's decor neutral helps buyers imagine their furniture and belongings in the space. Remove family photographs, kids' artwork posted on the refrigerator, bold artwork or collections, and tone down home accents. The potential buyer may not be interested in the same type of home decor, so replacing bold pieces with functional ones helps them imagine how his family could use each room in the house.

Get A Grant To Buy Foreclosed Houses

The federal department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides tens of millions of dollars in funding to state and local departments of housing to provide grants for the purchase and rehabilitation of foreclosed homes. These grants are made through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. The purpose of the program, according to HUD, is to "prevent or eliminate slums and blight" and "address urgent community development needs" objectives.

Instructions

1. Determine if the home you would like to purchase is eligible for a grant under the Neighborhood Stabilization Program in your state. You will need to spend at least 25% of the total grant to purchase a foreclosed home (also known as Real Estate Owned or REO). Exact participant requirements differ depending on local and state regulations. Contact your state department of housing for more information about participation in the program. Not every community has access to the NSP. Only neighborhoods that have been judged by HUD to be significantly affected by foreclosures, abandonments and blight are eligible to participate in the program.

2. Find out if you can realistically afford to purchase a home with the assistance of a grant from the NSP. Review price listings of REO properties in the community in which you are applying for an NSP grant. No community evaluates grant applicants based on income or credit score, but if you are awarded the grant, you'll be obligated to spend at least 25% of the grant on a down payment on the home with the rest of it going to renovation and other home-related costs. Many NSP grants are made in excess of $100,000. HUD does not publicly explain how it evaluates grant requests, but make sure you have sufficient funds and a strong enough credit score to qualify for an affordable mortgage or are capable of covering the rest of the home purchase in cash.

3. Apply for a grant through your local Neighborhood Stabilization Program. In most areas, the grants are time-limited for up to a few years. The grants often have further requirements. For example, if the home is to be redeveloped into a rental, the new owner may be required to adhere to the HUD Affirmative Fair Housing Marketing Plan, which places guidelines and limitations on how the apartments are marketed and priced. The number of grants available are limited. The exact requirements for grants differ depending on the community, but all mandate that you fill out a W9 form containing your social security number, home address and other relevant contact information. All communities also require that you complete the HUD Request for Release of Funds

and Certification form when applying for the grant which asks detailed questions about your intentions for purchasing, renovating and managing the property you're applying for a grant to purchase.

4. Use 25% or more of your grant money for a down payment on a foreclosed property. You may also be eligible for Federal Housing Administration (FHA) subsidized mortgages to finance the home purchase. FHA mortgages place many additional requirements on homeowners and it can take months to gain approval.

5. Comply with all regulations regarding the use of your Neighborhood Stabilization Program grant. The grants can also be used to demolish foreclosed properties and redevelop them afterward. You may be subject to penalties, fees and even criminal fraud charges if you misrepresent your intentions for spending the grant money.

Foundation Repair Options

Sometimes foundation problems lead to wall repairs.

Damage to the foundation of a home can have devastating consequences. Sunken concrete slabs, shifting walls, cracked masonry and more are all side effects of a faulty foundation. Essentially, part of the earth beneath your home is unstable or the materials used are changing in a way that is giving your home an unwanted facelift. When these problems arise, it is important to know your options for repairing the foundation before the damage gets worse. Does this Spark an idea?

Slabjacking

Slabjacking is a repair method used when unstable ground beneath a structure is causing the concrete foundation to sink. This may be caused by pockets of water or air between the foundation and the stable bedrock beneath. The result can be vertical and horizontal movement of the house, which will do major damage to floors, walls, driveways, sidewalks, doorways and windows.

Slabjacking means exactly what it sounds like---jacking up the slab. While it's not usually possible to actually put a jack beneath the slab, filling in the ground beneath it will accomplish the same feat. Shooting concrete slurry under the sunken area using high-pressure equipment will fill the void and cause the sinking area to rise. The concrete can be lifted up to the proper grade and it will divert problematic water from flowing under the damaged area.

Underpinning

For serious foundation problems, underpinning is usually the best solution for reliable repair. When the foundation is sinking and uneven, the damage to the home can range from inability to close doors completely to large cracks in the walls or brick separation and breakage that runs floor to ceiling. Even the slightest shift in foundation in one spot can do significant damage to the home.

Underpinning works by extending the support system of the foundation deep into the ground using pins that reach stable soil or rock far below the surface. These pins are wedged between the stable surface and the bottom of the foundation to hold it in place and prevent further sinking. The process can also level the already sunken area.

Some soil is better suited for building than others, and underpinning levels the playing field a bit by going deeper than the surface to support the load of the structure. This will make a foundation less susceptible to damage caused by changing weather, moisture and soil conditions.

Epoxy and Sealers

Sometimes foundation problems are most aesthetic and exist merely because of "shrinkage cracks." Shrinkage cracks happen to newer concrete as a result of the drying process. As the concrete particles move closer together and moisture evaporates, sometimes the slabs will crack. This is not a structural problem, but it can lead to problems if water or other liquids penetrate the cracks and freeze or remain for extended periods of time. Using epoxy and water sealing agents directly on the cracked surfaces will reduce any further damage from shrinkage cracking.

Replace The Fuse In A Panasonic Microwave

Your Panasonic microwave has suddenly died, and you are debating whether you want to purchase a new one or have the old one repaired. Before you do either, you should try replacing the fuse to see if that is the culprit. Panasonic microwaves are infamous for blown fuses. Fuses are a relatively inexpensive investment and pretty simple to replace, even for the electronics novice. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Unplug your microwave. Insert the size 15 Security Torx bit into your multi-bit screwdriver and remove the screws from the back panel. Take off the back panel.

2. Locate the fuse. It should be near where the electrical cord comes into the microwave. The fuse is a small white bar with metal caps on either end. Carefully remove the fuse. Avoid touching the transformer or other parts inside the microwave.

3. Purchase a new fuse. Most Panasonic microwave ovens use an 18 amp ceramic fuse. Consult your owner's manual to find out what kind of fuse is used, or take the old fuse into the store to find the exact match.

4. Replace the fuse. Put the cover back on and see if your microwave works. If it does, replace the screws. If it does not, try a different fuse. If the microwave still does not turn on, you may have to have it replaced of professionally repaired.

Replace The Fuses On A Central Air Conditioning Unit

During the blistering summer months, there is no place like home--as long as the air conditioning is pumping! Nothing makes your eyes and mouth open in wide surprise as the moment you hear the air conditioning take a dive. The house becomes eerily hushed and the temperature slowly begins to climb. Your home is turning into a sweat box! It may just be that your overworked air conditioning unit blew a fuse. Here is replace the fuses on a central air conditioning unit so you can get back to what is really important--relaxing in your lounger with a tall, cool lemonade and chuckling as your neighbor is soaking wet, cutting his grass. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. At the beginning of the summer months, it is a good idea to pick up some replacement fuses to have on hand just in case you need them. They are relatively inexpensive and when the temperature is in the 90s, you do not want to wait too long before you get the central air conditioning back up and cooling. The fuses can be purchased at your local hardware store.

2. Before you pick up your new fuses you have to have an idea of what kind you will need. In most central air conditioning installations there should be a disconnect switch located near the compressor outside. This is where the fuses are located. Before you open up the door on the disconnect switch, turn OFF the circuit breaker delivering power to it. It will usually be a two-pole, 30-amp breaker in your electrical panel, but not always, so be sure to check. In addition, turn OFF your thermostat before you begin troubleshooting your air conditioning unit.

3. With the circuit breaker and the thermostat OFF, head over to the disconnect switch, turn the switch OFF and open the door. Inside you will see two cartridge fuses with wires connected to terminals above and below them. Take your voltage tester and probe the two wires coming into the disconnect switch which are connected above the fuses (touch one probe to one terminal and the other probe to the other terminal). If you get no reading, probe the bottom wires as well. If you get no voltage readings on any of the wires, then it is safe to proceed.

4. Use the fuse pullers to pull out the cartridge fuses. There should be an amperage listed on the fuse (typically 30-amp). You will also want to know whether your unit requires standard, fast or delay-rated fuses. For easiest replacing, take one of your fuses to the hardware store and choose one with the exact specifications.

5. Now that you have your new fuses in tow, test the existing fuses for continuity (see link in Resources below for test a fuse). It is possible that only one fuse may be bad, but even if that is the case, I would replace both fuses so you are not in the same position next week.

6. If the fuses are in fact the problem, then install the replacement fuses. You should use the fuse pullers to insert the new fuses into their clamps. Make sure that the fuses are fully seated into their clamps. Close the door on the disconnect switch and turn the switch back on.

7. Turn the circuit breaker back on, and lastly, turn the thermostat back on. Dial down your thermostat and you should hear the wonderful click and hum of the central air conditioning kicking on. Ah, the sound of heaven.

Repair Ford Explorer Window Motors

Ford Explorer window motors can be removed without removing the window regulator from the door frame. The window regulators are bolted into the window regulator. Each window motor is specific to the location in the vehicle as to what side and what door, front or rear, left or right. Make sure to correctly identify the location from the standpoint of sitting in the vehicle.

Instructions

1. Remove the Phillips screws from the armrest using the Phillips screwdriver. There will be two screws in this area. Remove the screw in front of the door handle and then remove any screws on the bottom of the door panel (if there are any). Whether there are screws on the bottom of the door panel depends on the year.

2. Remove the window master switch using the small common screwdriver by inserting it in the rear of the window switch and prying the rear of the switch up, lifting the switch out and removing the electrical connector.

3. Lift the door panel up by grabbing the bottom of the door panel and raising it to remove the hooks on the back of the door panel from the recesses in the door. Rotate the bottom of the door panel outward to release the top curved part of the panel from the horizontal rail on the door, and remove the panel.

4. Remove the plastic water guard from the door. The plastic water guard conceals the window motor. Remove the electrical connector from the window motor.

5. Remove the 10 mm bolts from the window motor. These hold the window motor to the window regulator. Hold the window regulator in hand and face the gear upward. Remove the two screws in the cover around the gear and remove the cover. The motor uses a large plastic gear with plastic cylindrical buffers around the center of the gear to protect the main gear. These will be broken into pieces. Use the small screwdriver to lift the large white or yellowish gear out of the motor. Clean this gear of all pieces and then clean all the broken material out of the motor around the gear.

6. Insert the large gear back into the motor and install new plastic buffers in the obvious cavities. Use plenty of grease on the buffers. If the plastic buffers are not available, 10 mm nuts do just as well in these spaces. Install the cover over the gear, install the two screws and tighten. Replace the motor and panel in reverse order of removal.

Recycle Fluorescent Bulbs In Cincinnati

Fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, so recycle them to avoid hurting the environment.

The State Of Ohio Environmental Protection Agency recommends that all fluorescent bulbs and lamps be recycled. Although there is no law requiring households to recycle the bulbs, each bulb contains a small amount of mercury. When placed in the regular landfill, they may be crushed and the mercury can seep into the ground. In Cincinnati, there are a few companies that can help you recycle your used fluorescent lamps and bulbs. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Navigate to the State Of Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's Computer, Fluorescent Lamp and Ballast Recycler List.

2. Scroll through the list to navigate to Ohio. Locate a recycler in Ohio who recycles ML, or mercury-containing lamps.

3. Contact the recycling center that is most convenient to your home. Make arrangements for dropping off your bulbs.

4. Wrap the bulbs in a towel or blanket during transportation, so they don't break. Bring the bulb to the recycling facility during the time specified by the recycler.

Replace The Diverter Valve In A Bathtub

Regardless of which valve cartridge is in your faucet, the removal and installation process is the same.

If your bathtub diverter handle won't turn, water leaks out of the tub spout when you shower, the hot water won't flow or the diverter handle is stuck, the problem is a faulty valve cartridge. Faucets may look different, but they have the same basic internal parts. Depending on the manufacturer of the faucet, the valve cartridge is either one or two separate parts. Regardless of which valve cartridge is in your faucet, the removal and installation process is the same. Disassembling the faucet may vary slightly, because one faucet may have more parts than another faucet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Shut off the water to the residence. Turn the faucet on in the tub to drain water in the lines. Cover the surface of the bathtub with towels to protect it from damage. Keep parts from rolling into the drain by covering it with a towel.

2. Remove the handle from the diverter by loosening the screw under the handle with an Allen wrench. Use a screwdriver to pry off the decorative button covering the screw on an acrylic handle. Use pliers to unscrew a threaded button on an older metal handle. Use a screwdriver to remove the handle screw and then take off the handle.

3. Take off the escutcheon (wall plate). Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the face of the escutcheon and then remove it from the wall. An escutcheon without screws is held on by a threaded sleeve. Unscrew the threaded sleeve counterclockwise by hand to remove it and the escutcheon.

4. Remove the retaining clip, ring or gasket that secures the valve assembly to the faucet. Remove the retaining clip (Moen) from the top front of the valve by grabbing the metal lip with needle-nose pliers and pulling straight out. Unscrew the retaining ring counterclockwise by hand or with an adjustable wrench, depending on the model of faucet. Use a screwdriver to remove the four screws from the gasket on a Kohler valve. Pull the valve assembly and cartridge out of the faucet. Be prepared with a towel to catch the water as the valve assembly comes out. Remove any corrosion from the area with a wire brush or toothbrush.

5. Position the replacement cartridge in the faucet and push it all the way in. Insert the replacement valve, making sure the mark on the valve is upright so the hot and cold will not be reversed. Secure the valve with the retaining clip, ring or gasket screws. Reassemble the faucet by reversing the steps. Remove the towels from the bathtub. Turn the water supply to the residence back on and test the faucet.

Grants & Loans For People With Bad Credit

There are relatively few loan and grant options for those with bad credit. The cause of bad credit will ultimately determine which loans are available. If you have bad credit because you are socially disadvantaged and have a short credit history, there will be more options than if your credit suffers because of poor financial planning.

SBA Loans for Socially Disadvantaged Business Owners

If you are a small business owner or looking to start a small business, the Small Business Administration may be a good resource for financing. You should note that there are minimum credit requirements for these loans. However, if your lack of good credit is a result of a socially disadvantaged background, you may qualify for the 8(a) Business Development Program. You will be judged more on your character and chance of success than on your previous financial history for this opportunity.

FHA Down Payment Grants

First time home buyers needing assistance meeting down payment requirements to secure a mortgage may look to the Federal Housing Administration for grants. These grants never need to be paid back, and they are made accessible to low credit borrowers. You will be required to attend training sessions and meet other criteria, but there are a host of grants available if you are willing to go through these programs.

High Risk Loans

You may have low credit as a result of poor planning instead of social disadvantage. If this is the case, most government loan programs will be out of your reach. High risk lenders specialize in extending financing to those who would not otherwise qualify. Many high risk lenders operate online, and you can find high risk lenders in your area with an Internet search.

Secured Loans

Your credit score is assurance against default. Without a good score, you need to provide additional assurance. This can be done using collateral to gain a secured loan. Nearly any asset can be used as collateral including automobiles, home equity, stock certificates, savings accounts and personal assets. Secured loans are riskier for you, the borrower, but they are more accessible than unsecured loans if you have bad credit.

Co-Signed Loans

You can borrow the credit of a co-signer if other options are not working for you. Unfortunately, using a co-signer means the loan will not help build your credit to a significant degree if you pay it on time. Despite this short coming, co-signed loans are a good option if you are routinely denied financing due to your credit score.

Group Homes Disabled Definition

There are many different types of group homes. Some homes are licensed to serve foster children, some adolescents on probation, some are designed to assist recovering addicts and some are created to assist individuals with developmental or physical disabilities.

Group Homes

Group homes are privately run homes housing two or more individuals with similar needs in the same dwelling. Though the individual requirements vary state to state, group homes must be licensed. The type of license granted will determine who is eligible to receive services from the home.

Disabilities

Individuals with disabilities sometimes live in group homes when they are unable to live independently or with family. Some individuals also may live in a group home by choice. The types of disabilities treated in residential settings include mental retardation, cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy and similar conditions.

Funding

Individuals living in group homes generally receive Social Security Insurance. A large portion of the SSI goes to the care provider, with a small amount allotted for personal and incidental expenses. Group home operators will usually also receive supplemental funding from an outside agency such as Medi-Cal, the Regional Center or other state-funded institutions. While Medi-Cal and the Regional Center are state entities specific California, every state has its own agency set up to fund and oversee the care of the disabled. In Michigan and Tennessee, it is the Department of Human Services. Although they share the same name, they are different institutions. To locate the funding agency in your state, contact the institution that oversees health and human services and ask them for the contact information of the regulating body over state-licensed group homes.

Grow Avocados In Arizona

A group of avocados.

A Mexican avocado hybrid, called Winter Mexican, is the best type of avocado to grow in Arizona. The Winter Mexican avocado is hardier than other types of avocados being able to withstand temperatures in Arizona as high as 115 degrees F, and as low as 18 degrees F without sustaining damage. Giving the avocado tree plenty of shade and water will allow this fruit to thrive in Arizona weather. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose a site well shaded from the sun, such as on the side of the house or a large tree in the yard. Soil must be fast draining to avoid over saturation of the avocado tree roots causing root rot.

2. Dig a hole for the avocado tree 1 foot deep and two to three times the diameter of the rootball. Use the shovel to break up the soil in the bottom of the hole so it's loose instead of compact.

3. Use your hose to fill the hole with water approximately half way. Allow the water to seep into the soil. Take your knife or shears and cut the plastic pot away from the root ball of the avocado tree. Place the tree into the empty hole.

4. Mix compost into the soil you removed to make the hole. The mixture should be equal parts compost and soil. Make sure the compost is thoroughly mixed with the soil.

5. Fill in the hole with the compost and soil mixture. Stop filling the hole when it's 1 to 2 inches from the top. This recess forms a basin for water that will push salt in the water away from the roots of the young tree. Salt will burn the avocado's roots and kill it.

6. Water a young avocado tree two to three times a week, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between watering. Place hose near base of tree and allow water to trickle out of the hose for a few hours, a process known as deep watering. For established trees, lay a hose at the outer perimeter of the tree's leaves to water.

7. Check for dryness of the soil in high temperatures during the summer and increase water accordingly. Decrease watering during the winter and rainy season.

Profit From Home Foreclosure Sales

If you are an investor or just someone looking for the right investment, you may want to consider foreclosures. You can purchase foreclosure properties and make a sizable profit when they are resold. There are certain strategies you can utilize when dealing with foreclosures. During the foreclosure process, you can purchase a home at various stages. When you decide to purchase the home may decide how profitable your purchase turns out to be.

Instructions

1. Find foreclosures at all stages of the process. There are some websites that identify what stage a foreclosure is in. You can visit the website and key in the ZIP code of the area you are interested in and a listing will be available to identify all foreclosures in that area along with their stages. A foreclosure can be in the pre-foreclosure stage, auction stage or the bank-owned stage.

2. One of the stages is the pre-foreclosure stage. This is the stage when a lender issues a notice of default to the borrower stating he is past due. It files this notice with the county courthouse. This starts the foreclosure process. You may be able to make a deal with an anxious borrower who does not want to see his home foreclosed upon. There are pre-foreclosure listings that provide all of the information such as the address and balance for the account. If you purchase a property at a substantial discount, you can sell the property for a profit.

3. Review the auction stage. When a home is foreclosed upon, it has to be sold at an auction, if the borrower does not find another method to remedy his foreclosure. You can attend the auction and bid on the home. The minimum bid usually starts at an amount equal to the principal balance, interest, costs, plus attorney fees. When you bid, you may be required to have a cashier's check for 10 percent of the amount you are bidding (if you win the bid). In most cases, you will be given 30 days to obtain financing for the remaining balance. When a home goes to a sheriff's auction, you will not have access to the inside of the home.

4. Contact banks regarding the bank-owned stage. Sometimes a home will go to an auction and no one will bid on it. When this happens, the lender will then become the owner and the mortgage will be wiped out. The bank will then try to sell the home for as much as possible. Banks usually try to sell these homes in their current condition without doing any repairs. According to Realestateabc.com, some banks have entire departments that they utilize to handle their real estate owned (REO) properties. You may have to do some negotiating to get the best price possible.

5. Experiment with all three process. You may have to purchase foreclosures at all three stages to see which process or stage allows you to make the most money with the least amount of headaches. All of the processes have pros and cons. If you take your time and evaluate each process, you should be able to make a profit from the re-sale of these properties. No matter which stage you use, try to keep your expenses as low as possible.

Seal A Concrete Driveway'S Cracks

Cracks are a common occurrence in cement driveways.

Many homeowners have witnessed their attractive cement driveways become riddled with cracks. The cracks are not only unsightly, but can be dangerous if they are large; therefore, fixing and sealing the deformities is essential. A variety of issues, including weather and abuse, can contribute to driveway cracks. Fortunately, you don't have to dig up and repair your entire driveway to fix the issues; you can cover and seal the cracks with the help of a few tools and materials. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Insert a container of concrete-patching compound into a caulk gun, if the crack is less than ¼ inch wide. Point the tip of the gun into the crack and push on the gun to release the compound into the blemish. Smooth any excess compound coming through the crack with a trowel. Move the trowel along the compound until it is level with the driveway. Pour enough water on the compound to make it moist. Continue to apply the water during the week. Keeping the compound moist will help the compound to dry slowly and set effectively.

2. Enlarge cracks bigger than 1/4-inch wide with a cold chisel and hammer. Place the chisel on the side of the crack and hit its top with a hammer to make the crack at least 1 inch deep and 1 inch thick. Use a hose to wash away any rubble and dust. This process ensures the crack will be filled with enough compound to support the weight of objects that move over the driveway.

3. Apply concrete adhesive to the newly cut areas of the driveway with a paintbrush. The adhesive will help the repair compound seal the crack.

4. Pour premixed gravel concrete into a large bucket. Pour enough water over the mix for it to become damp and easily movable. Use a trowel to push the mixture down inside of the crack. When it starts to set, smooth it down with a trowel.

5. Cover the area with plastic sheeting or boards once it is dry, which usually takes about two hours. Keep the area covered for about five days. Lift the covering each day and apply enough water to moisten the concrete. This process allows the concrete to cure. Avoid stepping or driving on the patch for three to five days.

6. Clean the driveway and clear it totally of any dirt or debris once the patches are dry. Pour sealer onto the driveway to finish the sealing process. Sealing your entire driveway will help to secure the patches and prevent new cracks from occurring. Start by pouring about a quarter of the container of sealer onto one end of the driveway. Use a paint roller to move the sealant from side to side and work your way down to the other end of the driveway. Use a paintbrush to apply sealant to tight corners and edges. Pour more sealant as needed. Take care to apply the sealant as evenly as possible -- you want to leave a milky-white finish on the driveway, but not any puddles. Allow the sealant to dry for at least four hours before walking on it, although 24 hours is better.

Donate Furniture In Nyc

Many NYC charities accept furniture donations.

"Home" is a constantly changing concept, when your once-prized end table and lamp have lost their oomph. Instead of pining over the short lifespan of great design schemes, however, use your time deciding which nonprofit organization in New York City you're going to donate them to. Housing Works specializes in helping homeless people with HIV/AIDS, while the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul provides a gamut of services to anyone in need. There are a variety of local charities to choose from, some of whom even pick up. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a digital camera to photograph the old furniture and upload the pictures to your computer. Contact your favorite community nonprofit to see if they're in need of a donation. If so, email the pictures to the interested party and ask them to get back to you so you can arrange for a pickup or drop-off. If they're not interested, expand your search.

2. Using either the phone book or online version of your New York City phone directory, search under "charities in NYC," or "furniture donations." If you need to have your furniture donations picked up, contact only charities who provide this service.

3. If you need your furniture donations to be picked up, contact only charities who provide this service.

If you're referred to a website to fill out an online form to schedule a pickup, contact the charity by phone first, to be sure you're getting the most up-to-date information. You can also ask if your donation is tax deductible, as well as find out if the charity offers guidelines about value donations when filing taxes.

4. Agree on a time to have your furniture picked up, then provide your address and contact information. If possible, arrange to be home that day so you can get a receipt. If not, ask the charity to leave your receipt with a doorman or in your mailbox.

Repair A Home Telephone Line

To get your phone working again, you may need to conduct a few tests.

Home telephone wiring is not very complicated, despite the collection of wires in a bundled cable. It takes just two wires to make a connection, so if your phone isn't working, you just need to trace along these wires to find where the connection is broken. The wires are color-coded, which makes finding problems easier. A test phone is a good tool to have when you are looking for problems in your phone line. Because it doesn't need to be plugged into a wall outlet, you can use it to check for a dial tone at any jack. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Open the door to the network interface device (NID) with a Phillips screwdriver. It is located on the side of your house just below where the phone company lines drop down. There are a series of modules inside, each supplying one phone line. Each line is identified by the telephone number on the door of the module.

2. Remove the plug from the jack just under the module for the phone line that isn't working and plug in a test phone. Listen for a dial tone. If you don't hear one, or it is weak or scratchy, call the phone company. The problem is in their lines, and it is their responsibility to fix it.

3. Unscrew the green and red terminals inside the module, take off the attached wires and inspect the ends to make sure at least 1/2 inch of bare wire is exposed. Strip off more insulation with a utility knife if there is less than this.

4. Note the colors of the wires connected to each terminal. If you have only one phone line, the phone company standard is to use the red/green pair, or the pair with blue and white stripes. If it's a second phone line, the standard is to use the yellow/black pair, or the pair with orange and white stripes. The red or yellow wire, or the one that has a solid color with white stripes, should be connected to the red terminal. The green or black wire, or the one that is white with solid stripes, should be connected to the green terminal. Follow this standard to avoid confusion when checking the connections in the jacks in your house.

5. Plug the test phone into the jack in which your phone is plugged. You may have resolved the problem by tightening connections at the NID. If not, unscrew the cover of the jack, remove it and check the wiring. The wire connected to the green terminal in the NID should be connected to either the green terminal in the jack, or the one with a "T," for "tip." The wire connected to the red terminal should be connected to the red terminal, or the one that says "R" for "ring."

6. Connect the wires to the two central terminals, if the jack has room for more than one line, and you only have one phone. Make sure the wires are sufficiently stripped, and that the connections are tight.

7. Test the line again with the test phone. If the problem persists, trace along the phone line from the jack to the NID, looking for signs of damage. Mice and rodents sometimes chew through telephone cables. If you find damage, screw a wiring block, which is a junction box for phone wiring, to a nearby stud, cut the wires and attach each end to the terminals on the block, keeping in mind the color code you are using.

8. Check the wiring between jacks if the dial tone is good in one phone, but scratchy in another.

Septic Tank Repairs & Maintenance

Septic tanks are the primary resource for waste removal in houses where public sewers are not offered. Septic tank systems require regular maintenance to ensure a long life and proper drainage. Failure of a septic system due to lack of regular maintenance can result in an expensive repair or replacement. Does this Spark an idea?

Size

Septic tanks come in different sizes to accommodate the amount of waste water produced from the household. Septic systems must be of appropriate size to reduce problems and repairs. 500-gallon tanks are the smallest, and sizes range up to several thousand gallons. State laws often dictate the minimum size allowable by a residence. Size needed is determined by amount of people using system.

Misconceptions

Septic tank cleaners that claim to boost bacteria and enzymes to help further reduce waste don't usually work. They don't significantly reduce any need for regular pumping. They also might contain ingredients that could harm drinking water and vegetation.

Prevention

The best way to prevent repairs to a septic system is regular pumping. This reduces the amount of solids that get into the drain field. Regular pumping will help maintain a healthy balance of solids to liquids in the tank reducing the risk of clogs. Smaller systems require more frequent pumping, as do systems that more then average use.

Repair

Repair of septic systems should be left to professionals. Repairs often include collapses, damage caused by roots, and basic clogs. Since raw sewage will be involved, you will more than likely need to call the health department in case of a spill or leak. Roots often grow into the system, either clogging the pores or breaking pipes or walls causing a failure. Clogs are caused by solids built up and can often be fixed by pumping the system.

Warning

There are some items that should never be put down a drain due to its effects on a septic system. Cooking grease, oil and fats harden when coming in contact with cool water and can clog the pores of a septic. Harsh chemicals such as pain, pain thinners, solvents and poisons harm the microorganisms that purify the waste. Also, anything entered into a septic gets put back into the ground. Chemicals put down a household drain will go through a septic system and contaminate the drinking water.

Help With Paying Rent & Utilities

Ask your power company about assistance programs available.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) help low-income individuals and families have access safe housing that is affordable. The programs offered through HUD help with rent payments and assist those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The U.S. Department of Energy can offer assistance with utility bills. An individual can access rental and utility bill help through a local housing authority office or community agency.

Utility Bill Help

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps low-income households pay for utility bills. Also offered is energy crisis assistance to households that received a power shut-off notice. In addition to utility help, LIHEAP provides programs that teach households to warm themselves safely when it is cold without using items that may pose a danger to the home, such as grills and ovens. Many utility companies provide information about accessing energy assistance in the paperwork they send with the monthly bill.

Public Housing

Community housing agencies, such as housing authority offices, that manage qualified rental properties receive federal funds from HUD. These funds allow the community housing agency to offer low-income tenants affordable rent prices in a safe environment. Those who are disabled and the elderly may also qualify to live in public housing rental units. According to HUD, 1.2 million households in the U.S. access public housing services through about 3,300 community housing agencies. Public housing options can range from apartments to single-family homes.

Section 8 Housing

HUD offers Section 8 housing through the Housing Choice Voucher program, which offers help with rental payments. This program allows qualified individuals and families to live in a rental property of their choice, regardless if the property is privately owned or part of a public housing program. Qualified privately owned rental properties are those that have proprietors that accept Section 8 vouchers. In the Housing Choice Voucher program, the tenant must pay 30 percent of her monthly income towards rent and utilities, and the program will pay the remaining balance. If the rental price does not meet the fair-market rent rate, the tenant must also pay the difference between the rental rate and the market rate.

Homeless Rental Assistance

The Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) is part of a federal stimulus program that helps families and individuals who need rent assistance because they are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The HPRP awards funds to nonprofit organizations and charities that help this population so they can assist with homeless prevention services, rental payments, back rent, security deposits or eviction prevention. An organization can also use HPRP funds to help those who are homeless find independent, stable housing.

Replace Shower Faucets In A Mobile Home

Replace Shower Faucets in a Mobile Home

Mobile home shower faucets can be removed only by accessing the back of the faucet. The way to get to the back of the faucet is through the wall behind the shower. There may not be an access panel available. If you have to cut a wall open to replace your shower faucet, take the opportunity to install an easy access panel for the next time you need access to the faucet. It will cost little, is easy to install, and will save you time and trouble in the long run. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Turn off the main water supply valve that brings water into the mobile home. Open the hot and cold taps in the faucet and drain the water lines. If you forget this step you will be cleaning up water on the floor.

2. Locate the access panel in the wall behind your shower faucet and use a drill to remove the screws. The access panel may be glued on. Use a pry bar to gently pry the panel off. If the access panel has been painted over, use a utility knife around the outer edges to cut through the layers of paint before prying. In the event there is no access panel, use a straight edge and utility knife to cut through drywall. If you are installing an easy access panel, cut the wall the same size as the panel with the top edge 4 inches above the mounting of the faucet.

3. Cover your work area with plastic and a towel to catch any water. Unscrew the water lines counterclockwise. Unscrew the plastic mounting nuts, which should be hand tight. Use a wrench gently if you can't unscrew the nuts by hand. Plastic mounting nuts can be easily damaged by tools. Pull the faucet out of the shower wall from the front.

4. Install the new faucet by inserting it through the shower wall. Replace the mounting nuts by turning them clockwise and hand tighten. Screw the water lines on the connectors and hand tighten.

5. Turn the main water supply valve on and check your faucet for leaks. If you find a leak in your connections tighten them until the leak stops. Replace the access panel using a drill and screws or construction adhesive. If you are installing an easy access panel follow the manufacturer's instructions for the installation.

Fixing Car Dents

Depending on the size and depth of the dent you want to remove, there are two different ways that you may want to approach making your car look better again. The simplest method of dent repair, and one which works surprisingly well for many dents, involves the use a common hair dryer and a spray can of air--the type used for cleaning computer keyboards. The second method, which will also be touched upon here, involves the use of the old stand-by--the car dent-pulling tool and lots of body filler.

Instructions

1. Wash the dented area with warm water and dish soap. Rinse and pat dry.

2. Warm the dent with a hand-held hairdryer for a full minute.

3. Turn your can of compressed air up-side-down and spray the super-cold CO2 propellant onto the entire surface of the heated dent. A layer of ice will form over the dented area. Wait. The super-cold ice will cause the metal in the dent to contract, causing the dent to pop back out. Do not touch the area until all ice has disappeared. Once ice has disappeared, wipe area with a soft, clean cloth.

4. Repeat the hair dryer and compressed air step if the dent is not fully repaired. If necessary, touch up tiny remaining imperfections with body filler. Allow filler to dry thoroughly (as per manufacturer's instructions) and then lightly sand smooth with 350-grit paper, finishing with 1,000-grit paper and finally wiping smooth with 00000-grade steel wool.

5. Mask areas around body filler and spray filler with primer. Allow to to dry and spray again. Repeat until you have at minimum of five coats of primer. Wipe with 0000 steel wool. You are now prepared to paint.

6. To repair dents that do not respond to the first method, drill a small hole in the center of the dent and attach a dent puller. Follow the simple manufacturer's instructions to pull the dent out flush with the car. If necessary, use a hammer to pound the dent slightly until it is flush with the car.

7. Use body filler to smooth out the dented area until it blends perfectly into the body of the car. Sand with 350-grit paper and then lightly sand with 1,000-grit paper until the dented area is perfectly shaped and smooth. Wipe with 0000 steel wool for a final polish.

8. Mask area with filler and apply a minimum of five coats of spray primer, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly before the next coat is applied. Wipe the final coat of primer with 0000 steel wool until it is perfectly smooth and then apply paint.

Fix The Accessory Power Outlet In A Car

Fix the Accessory Power Outlet in a Car

Most modern vehicles contain at least one accessory power outlet. Commonly known as cigarette lighters, these outlets supply 12 volts of DC, Direct Current, power and can be used to power multiple accessories and electronic devices.

Although power outlets occasionally fail, the repairs are often simple and can be competed with a minimum of expertise and tools. Depending on your vehicle, the outlet may or may not be live when the ignition is turned off.

Instructions

Check for Blown Fuse

1. Locate the fuse panel on your vehicle.

This panel is usually located under the dash on either side of the vehicle and may be covered by an access panel. Consult your owner's manual if you have difficulty locating this panel.

2. Remove the access panel.

3. Examine the fuse panel, and look for a fuse marked "accessory", "lighter" or any label that would indicate a fuse is associated with the power accessory jack.

On vehicles with multiple power outlets, there may be more than one accessory outlet fuse.

4. Use a fuse puller to remove the appropriate fuse from the panel. Hold the fuse up to light, and examine the fusible link inside the fuse. If the link appears broken, replace the fuse with one of similar type and current rating.

Fuse pullers are available at any automotive parts supplier and are often sold in packages with an assortment of fuses.

5. Replace the panel and verify the power plug functions correctly.

Check for Damaged Outlet Plug

6. Expose the rear of the outlet plug.

You may need to disassemble some sections of the dashboard to expose the outlet plug.

7. Remove the electrical connector from the rear of the outlet plug.

8. Turn the vehicle on, and use a volt meter to verify that there are 12 volts DC present at the two terminals in the electrical connector.

If this voltage is present, the outlet plug is defective.

If the voltage is not present, the problem is likely inside the dash wiring. Refer this problem to a qualified mechanic.

9. Procure a new outlet plug, which should be available from any auto parts supplier.

Remove the existing outlet and replace with the new one. Attach the electrical connector to the new outlet plug.

North Carolina Housing Grants

North Carolina offers funding to communities for housing renovation projects.

Individual homeowners cannot receive housing grants directly from the state. The municipality your home is located in will determine which properties are eligible to receive assistance. Communities that develop projects designed to build new housing, or improve homes that already exist, apply for grant funding as it becomes available through the state Department of Commerce.

Housing Development

Your county or city government can use funds from Housing Development Grants to build or renovate single-family homes and rental units. To qualify you must have low-to-moderate income. Counties with programs to promote home ownership and rental property development receive the grants. Certain cities located within designated development zones are eligible for funding as well. Municipalities may receive as much as $18,000 for each qualified home in need of repair, and up to $250,000 for construction of new rental housing units in your community. Housing Development Grants are also given to upgrade streets, sidewalks, and sewer and water systems in neighborhoods receiving assistance for home repair or construction.

Scattered Site Housing

Scattered Site Housing grants may be used by your local government to renovate your home if it is a manufactured type, modular design or custom built. In extreme cases, your family can be moved to a new home if your current residence is unable to be repaired. To qualify you must be the legal owner and your household income must be equal to or less than 50 percent of the average in your community. The state awards money to clusters of counties on a rotating schedule every three years if they develop programs with all cities and towns to improve living conditions for eligible citizens. Each county receives $400,000 from the grant program. A municipality located in a county not participating in the program can apply for Scattered Site Housing funds separately.

Community Revitalization

Your city and county may apply for Community Revitalization grant funding to manage the rehabilitation of impoverished neighborhoods. The project must include a variety of improvements to your neighborhood, but focus on housing as a priority. Replace Putty On Windows

Sometimes the putty on your windows wears out, even though the glass is still perfectly good. The glazer's putty is what creates an air and water tight seal between the window pane and the window frame. If the putty deteriorates, the seal is no longer functional. You can replace the putty on your windows with just a few simple tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Scrape away the old putty. Use a putty knife to break the putty into small pieces for removal. This helps avoid splitting the wood frame. Soften stubborn putty with a heat gun or hair dryer. Work on a small portion at a time. Make sure to remove all small bits of the old putty.

2. Remove the glass. If the glass is intact, carefully press from the opposite side to remove it from the frame. Set it aside.

3. Scrape away any remaining hunks of putty. Use the putty knife to remove any traces of the old putty that remain after you remove the glass.

4. Apply linseed oil to wood to help keep the putty from drying out too fast. Use an old cloth and wipe the part of the frame where the window glass rests, and where you removed the old putty.

5. Knead the putty until it is soft and pliable. Apply a 1/16-inch layer of putty around the frame in the slot where you removed the window pane.

6. Re-insert glass on top of putty. Press down firmly on glass, using even pressure.

7. Insert a glazer's point every 4 to 5 inches around the frame. These hold the glass firmly in place in the window frame. Lay glazer's point flat on the glass with the "point" towards the frame. Tap gently with a putty knife to get it started into the wood. Use the glazing tool to finish driving the glazer's points into the frame.

8. Knead more putty if necessary. Make putty "rope" by rolling between palms. Lay putty rope into slot where window pane rests, directly on top of the glazer's points. Use a putty knife to push the putty into the slot and create a seal between the window glass and wood frame. Don't put it on too thickly.

9. Smooth the putty with the glazing tool. Hold the tool at a 45-degree angle and use smooth, even strokes to spread the putty out. Don't let the putty extend more than ¼-inch onto the glass. You shouldn't be able to see the putty from the other side of the window.

10. Paint the putty to seal out the weather. Some brands can be painted immediately; other brands of putty require a curing period before painting. Read and follow manufacturer's instructions.
