Housing Grants For Rehabilitation In Pennsylvania

Citiies and counties in Pennsylvania offer housing rehabilitation grants.


Structural and home system repairs are not cheap, and for low-income households, needed work may be unaffordable. Homeowners in Pennsylvania meeting income criteria may qualify for grants to rehabilitate their houses and keep them livable. Cities and counties in the commonwealth offer various grants for owner-occupied dwellings so residents can make the necessary repairs.


Philadelphia Housing Trust Fund


The Philadelphia Housing Trust Fund grants monies for four different housing rehabilitation programs in the city. The Basic Systems Repair Program provides grants for low-income residents for structural repairs and upgrading of electrical, heating and plumbing systems and roofs. The Targeted Housing Preservation Program funds to community organizations for residential system repairs and facade improvements in certain neighborhoods. The Homeownership Rehabilitation Program offer first-time home buyers meeting certain income requirements the opportunity to buy vacant houses needing moderate work . The Adaptive Modifications Program allows disabled homeowners or tenants to retrofit their dwellings for accessibility purposes.

Bradford County Community Planning and Grants


Bradford County's Housing Rehabilitation Program provides grants up to $20,000 for low-income, single-family homeowners for home improvements. Applicants must have their names on the property's deed or title, a homeowners insurance policy and occupy the dwelling. Property taxes must be paid to date. The county planning office also administers grant money for the rehabilitation of historic homes.

Dauphin County: Housing Rehabilitation Program


Dauphin County offers a housing rehabilitation program with grants up to $20,000 for eligible residents. However, those living in the state capital of Harrisburg cannot apply. Funding must be used to bring houses up to code and repair any hazardous or unsanitary conditions. Monies cannot be used to pay bills for previous home repairs. Applicants must own and live in their houses, and it must be their principal residence. Income limits apply. Should the house be sold within 10 years, the county Department of Community & Economic Development may be reimbursed for the grant.

Limestone Foundation Repair

4. Use a garden hose with the nozzle set to mist to wet the entire wall and joints thoroughly.


5. Mix mortar in a trough or large bucket according to the directions on the bag.


6. Wet the limestone wall and joints again, lightly, using the mist setting on the hose's nozzle. Wetting the wall prevents the dry limestone wall from pulling the moisture out of the wet mortar.


7. Fill a grout bag with wet mortar.


8. Place the tip of the grout bag into the empty space of the mortar joint and squeeze mortar in while moving along the joint line. Fill the mortar into the joint and slightly higher than the surface of the limestone.


9. Use the tip of a pointed trowel to press fresh mortar deeply into the mortar joints and even the mortar surface. Add more wet mortar to the joint with the mortar bag if necessary to build it up flush with the limestone surface.


10. Wet the wall surface lightly and cover with a heavyweight plastic tarp for three to four days while the mortar cures. Make sure the wall and mortar joints stay slightly wet during the curing process; mist lightly with the hose if walls dry. If they do not remain moist, the mortar will disintegrate and crumble.

This program operated by Entergy Texas serves 27 counties in Eastern Texas and more than 400,000 customers. LG refrigerator error codes can have very simple causes.


LG refrigerators with digital displays have an easy to read system for alerting owners of possible problems and to give repairmen the ability to quickly diagnose the causes of malfunctions. These LG refrigerator error codes often have fairly common causes that can be easily remedied by the user. However, some error codes will require the assistance of a professional repair service. Error Code 0 FF


Sometimes an LG refrigerator will display an error code of "0 FF." This is not an error code in the normal sense. This message simply indicates that the unit is in "demo mode." On a front display refrigerator, the problem can usually be resolved by pushing the "refrigerator" and "ice plus" buttons simultaneously for 5 to 10 seconds with the refrigerator door open. Top-mounted refrigerators have the same fix but only the light switch needs to be held and only for about 5 seconds.


Error Code Er IF


All of the codes that indicate malfunctions or similar problems will be shown with an "Er" on the digital display. The LG refrigerator "Er IF" error code is the "Icemaker Fan Error" message. As the name suggests, this error code indicates a problem with the fan that controls the unit's ice production. If this problem occurs because of ice buildup, unplugging the unit for 3 to 4 hours and allowing it to thaw may fix the issue. Customer service should be contacted if the problem persists.


Error Code Er FF


This code is not to be confused with the O FF or demo mode error message. The "Er FF" error code indicates a problem with the unit's freezer fan. The freezer fan controls the temperature in the freezer. The source of this error is most likely ice buildup. As with the Er IF error, allowing the unit to thaw should resolve the issue. Contact customer service if the error code continues to be displayed after having thawed the unit.

The "Er FS," or Freezer Sensor Error, is most likely caused by a short or a cut somewhere in the unit's circuitry. Sometimes unplugging the unit for a few minutes will reset the system and remove the error code. Customer service should be contacted if the problem persists.


Error Code Er rS


A Refrigerator Sensor error, or "Er rS," is another error code that may be caused by a cut or short somewhere. A temporary solution would be to unplug the unit for a few moments while the system is reset. Customer service should be called if the error message persists.


Error Code Er ds


The LG refrigerator will display an "Er ds" error code if it detects a problem with the defrost sensor. Again, this error message probably denotes a cut or short somewhere in the system. Attempting to reset the system by unplugging the unit may fix the problem. If the problem persists, customer service should be contacted.


Error Code Er dH


The "Er dH," also known as the Defrost Heater Error message, is displayed when the unit fails to reach 46º F within 2 hours of beginning its defrost cycle. This may be an indication of the defrost heater having broken or the temperature fuse having been pulled out of its slot. Contact customer service if the problem persists after having attempted a system reset.


Error Code Er CF


The unit will receive signals from the BLDC fan motor in the freezer compartment during normal operation. If more than 65 seconds pass without a signal from the fan motor, an "Er CF" error message will be displayed. The Cooling Motor Error is usually an indication of a faulty fan motor or loose leads. Customer service should be contacted immediately.


Error Code Er CO


The LG refrigerator may display a Communications Error message ("Er CO") in the event of a short or other malfunction associated with communication between the main circuit board and the display. While attempting a system reset is an option, customer service will most likely need to be contacted in order to provide a permanent solution.

Painting the walls of your home may add to its beauty, but does not usually qualify as a tax deduction.


A home is the largest single purchase most Americans will ever make, so it makes sense to keep your home in good repair. Even new homes need regular maintenance to keep them in top shape. There are a number of expenses associated with buying a new home that may be deductible on your federal income taxes. Repairs to your new home are typically not among them, unless you use your home for business purposes.


Deductible Expenses


The Internal Revenue Service recognizes four primary categories of deductible expenses associated with the purchase of a new home. You may deduct certain real estate taxes, provided the taxes are imposed on you by a state or local taxing authority and the taxes are based on the assessed value of your home. You may deduct the mortgage interest from a loan that is secured by your first or second home. You may elect to deduct your sales taxes, including the sales taxes on your new home, instead of deducting your state income taxes. You may deduct mortgage insurance that is required by your lender. Repairs to your new home are not among the categories of deductible expenses allowed by the IRS.


Improvements


You may include certain expenses associated with improving your new home to the cost basis of your home. The increased coat basis of your home -- the money you put into improvements -- means you would have a lower taxable gain when you decide to sell your home. This would lower your capital gains tax obligation, but this is not the same thing as a tax deduction on your income taxes. The Internal Revenue Service considers things that significantly prolong your home's useful life, significantly add to your home's value, or adapts a portion of your home to a new use to be improvements. Paving your driveway, rewiring your home, replacing the roof or adding a bathroom are examples of improvements, according to the IRS. Expenses for improvements to your new home are not deductible on your income taxes.


Repairs


The Internal Revenue Service makes a distinction between improvements and repairs. Repairs are physical things you do to maintain your home in an ordinary, efficient operating condition, such as painting the exterior or patching the roof. Since repairs don't prolong your home's life and do not add to your home's value, the IRS does not consider a repair to be an improvement. You may not deduct the cost of repairs to your new home when you file your taxes. You cannot add repairs to the basis of your home unless they are performed as part of a major restoration or remodeling job.


Business Use of Home


You may be able to deduct a portion of the expenses associated with repairs to your new home if you use part of your home regularly and exclusively as your principal place of business. The amount of the repairs that you may deduct depends on whether the repairs were directly related, indirectly related or unrelated to your business. If the repair was directly related to the part of your home that you use for business, such as repairing an electrical outlet in your home office, the repair would be 100 percent deductible. A repair that was needed for the operation of the entire home, such as replacing a circuit breaker on your central air conditioning system, is an indirect expense. You may only deduct the percentage of these repair expenses that correspond to the business use percentage, which is determined by dividing the number of square feet in the home that you use for business purposes by the total square feet in your home. Repairs that only apply to parts of your home that don't relate to your business, such as replacing the light fixture in your bedroom, are not related to your business and are not deductible at all. 1. First, we have to know there are two different types of toilet valves; one is "float cup fill valve", and the other, "ballcock fill valve" types. The ballcock uses a "ball", usually black or gray in color, that floats on the water's surface in the toilet tank. On the other hand, the float cup operates vertically on the fill tube.

Tar paper, used as a base material underneath the shingles, comes in large rolls; consult the packaging to determine how many rolls you'll need (usually two rolls are enough to complete most roof sizes).


4. Purchase additional materials such as metal drip flashing, shingle caps and vents as well as a box of roofing nails (1000 count is recommended). Make sure you have enough hammers to go around, or chose to rent a nail-gun if you don't have one. This will make the job of attaching the squares faster and easier.


5. Rent a portable dumpster unit to be delivered on the morning of the job and set it a couple of yards from the roof. This will allow you to toss the roofing material into the dumpster as they're removed. Once it's full, the company will come and remove the dumpster for you and dispose of the old materials.


6. Remove as much as possible from the immediate area surrounding the roof (cars, children's toys, etc.) on the morning of the job. Make sure there's enough safety gear to go around for everyone: work gloves, boots and eye goggles. Also have sun block on hand as well as plenty of water if the work is to be performed on hot days.

1. Turn off the circuit breaker, remove the fuse or turn off the main power supply to the house before undertaking any electrical work. If you have an old fuse box, each fuse represents a different circuit. In newer electrical systems, fuse boxes are replaced with breakers, which serve the same purpose but can be switched on and off rather than replaced.


2. Replace outdated outlets that lack grounds by removing them from the walls. You can tell these outlets because they have two elongated holes but no round hole between them. The round hole accommodates the ground prong in a grounded plug. All outlets now have three holes in them. Remove the plate, pull the old outlet out of the wall and disconnect it from its wires.


3. Feed new, grounded wire from the fuse box or breaker box to the outlet that is being replaced. In a finished house, this is often the most difficult part of a job because you have to get the wire through the wall. This can involve either fishing the wire from the basement up into a wall using a special hooking tool, or cutting pieces out of the walls to get the wiring through.


4. Feed the wire through the opening for the outlet and attach a new outlet to the wires with needle-nose pliers. Attach the black (live) wire to the gold screw on the side of the outlet, the white (neutral) wire to the silver screw on the side of the outlet and the bare (ground) wire to the screw on the bottom of the outlet.

1. Check the power. If your Whirlpool dryer does not operate you may need to replace defective fuses. That includes the thermal fuse located inside the back cover panel. Look for open contacts in the timer. Verify that the door switch and the door switch activator are operational and that the circuit breaker hasn't been tripped.


2. Examine the coils. If your dryer isn't producing any heat the gas valve coils may be defective. This prohibits the valve from opening and the gas from igniting. The electric igniter and the terminal bracket that secures it may need to be replaced. Also check to see if the thermal fuse is blown, if both volt circuits are on and the thermostats are functional.


3. Test the drive belt. If your dryer does not tumble a broken drive belt and/or idler pulley may need to be replaced. Test for a burned out motor. If the motor is stiff, does not rotate manually and the blower fan housing is obstruction-free, the motor needs replacing. Also check for a defective door switch.


4. Check the vent. If a load takes longer than one hour to dry clear the vent duct of any obstructions. Determine if the heating element is partially burned out. Unclog the internal ductwork by removing the lint filter and inspecting inside the duct. Verify the cycling thermostat is working properly. In gas dryers a defective flame sensor may be responsible.


5. Inspect the motor. If your Whirlpool dryer is making too much noise it is most likely due to a defective motor. Worn rollers (or wheels), idler pulley, plastic glides, rear drum bearing or blower wheel may also be to blame. In most instances replacing the worn part will solve the problem.


6. Check the thermostat. If your appliance overheats replacing a defective cycling thermostat or unclogging a vent system generally will alleviate the problem.


7. Replace worn rollers. If your clothes are being damaged you may need to replace the rollers that support the clothes drum, rear and/or front drum seals and/or front glides.

Home Electrical Requirements

Electrical work can be dangerous; make sure that power is disabled before starting a project.


In the United States there exists the National Electric Code (NEC). This code is the basis for most local electrical portions of local building codes. However, if you are planning a major electric project, get from the local building department its electric code for the area where the project will be located. Common Code Requirements


The use of plastic electrical boxes is very common in the United States, but some localities do require metal boxes. Check this with your local building department. All new receptacles, fixtures and appliances must be grounded. Most building departments allow the use of nonmetallic (NM) cables. If it is acceptable to use it, this is the easiest cable to work with. However, if there is exposed cable, not located behind drywall or plaster walls, the local building code may insist that the cable be of the armored type or run in a conduit. Residential circuits are usually 120 volts and 15-amp. Lighting must be connected to 15-amp circuits, but in laundry rooms and kitchens, 20-amp circuits can be the requirement. The use of 14-gauge wire is the recommendation for 15-amp circuits, while 12-gauge wire is preferable for 20-amp circuits. If the changes being made do not call for a new circuit, your existing fuse box or circuit breaker panel most likely will suffice for the project. But, if additional circuits need to be added, the panel may need upgrading or require a subpanel.


Bathroom Requirements


Because so many appliances are used in bathrooms, like hair curlers, hair dryers, electric razors, lighting, fans, and perhaps auxiliary heat, the bathroom electricity should be on a 20-amp circuit. While it is a good idea to have a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) on every bathroom outlet, the NEC requires only that any outlet within 6 feet of a water source be a GFCI. The GFCI is a protective device that senses change in the flow of electricity. If a circuit becomes wet, the GFCI will react in 1/30th of a second and shut down the outlet, protecting the user from electric shock.


Kitchen Requirements


Each kitchen appliance with a motor must have its own 240-volt circuit. These appliances include the refrigerator, stove and cooktop, garbage disposal and microwave. In addition, the NEC requires a minimum of two outlets above the counter top. Here too, if within 6 feet of a water source, there must be GFCI outlets installed.


Living Room and Bedroom Requirements


The living room and bedrooms are to have a wall switch right next to the entrance, to light the room before entry. The wall switch can control an outlet with a lamp plugged into it, a wall sconce, or an overhead fixture. Overhead fixtures may not be controlled by a pull chain. Outlets on the room perimeters should be spaced 12 feet apart. If there is a dining room, NEC requires one 20-amp outlet as part of the perimeter configuration of an outlet every 12 feet.


Stairways. Hallways and Closets


Stairways must have three-way switches at the top and the bottom to allow for lighting the stairway from entry points at each end. Stairways with landings should have a light on the landing(s) on the same three-way circuit to make sure the landing(s) is well-lit. Hallways more than 10 feet long must have at least one regular outlet for utility purposes. In addition, each end of the hallway requires a three-way switch. The NEC requires closets to have one globe-covered light connected to a wall switch.


Laundry and Garage


The laundry room needs its own 20-amp receptacle. Also, if the dryer is electric, it must be connected to a separate 240-volt circuit.

Help For Veterans Facing Foreclosure

Service members on average have received $95,444 per household through the military Homeowners Assistance Program.


The government has initiated programs to assists veterans and service members facing foreclosure. President Obama and previous presidents, in cooperation with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, and the Department of Defense, or DOD, jump-started these financial aid and counseling programs for distressed homeowners. Programs that have been implemented benefit veterans as well as the general population. Other initiatives include amending laws and providing free legal services to benefit service members. The veteran must still meet certain eligibility requirements to receive assistance.


Servicemembers Civil Relief Act


In 2003, President Bush signed the Servicemembers' Civil Relief Act into law. The act provides various options to ease the financial burdens of a service member ordered for active duty. These relief efforts include an automatic 90-day stay for any civil proceedings, as active-duty members can't be physically present in court. The law also protects service members from eviction, and caps interest rates at 6 percent for any debt.


Military Homeowners Assistance Program


The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 expanded Homeowners Assistance Program, or HAP, benefits to include service members who have been adversely affected by a housing-market downturn. Eligible service members who have been ordered to relocate and need to sell their house receive a reimbursement if the home has experienced a 10 percent decrease in equity and if it was purchased prior to June 30, 2006. HAP benefits also include financial aid for the costs associated with a foreclosure and assistance with the resale of the home. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, or USACE, administers HAP.


Making Home Affordable Programs


The Obama Administration implemented the Making Home Affordable program to provide homeowners with alternatives to foreclosure. This program can assist veterans who are facing foreclosure to obtain a loan modification, loan refinance or, if they're currently unemployed, forbearance on mortgage payments. To be eligible for a loan modification or a forbearance, the homeowner's unpaid principal balance can be no more than $729,750; this figure is current as of December 2010. The homeowner must be able to demonstrate financial hardship, and the monthly mortgage payment must exceed 31 percent of total household income.

The Legal Services Corporation has provided funding to assist active-duty military members, veterans and military households with foreclosure counseling. 2. Tear pieces of fiberglass mat to replace the rusted metal that was removed. Use as many layers as it takes and tear each one 1/4 inch bigger than the last.


3. Mix a batch of resin in a small bucket adding two to three percent catalyst. Stir the catalyst into the resin using the stir stick until it's completely mixed in.


4. Wet the surface of the repair area with the resin using a 4-inch felt roller. Apply the smallest layer of mat first in the center of the repair and saturate it with resin using the felt roller. Roll the layer flat and remove all the trapped air from underneath it with an air roller. Apply the next smallest layer and repeat the same process. Continue following the same procedure for each layer until the repaired area is built back up level with the surrounding metal. Let the fiberglass cure and harden for at least an hour.


5. Put a respirator on and sand the repair completely level with the surrounding metal using a palm sander with 220grit sandpaper. After it is sanded with the 220, re-sand it with 600 -grit to get it completely smooth.

Fix An Overflowing Septic Tank

An overflowing septic tank usually means that your leach lines are saturated and clogged and you need to lay new lines in a fresh part of the yard. This will be a costly plumbing repair, and you may not have the resources to get the job done by a professional plumbing company. One "quick fix" is to have the septic tank drained by a mobile sewerage disposal company; this will eliminate sewerage backup for as long as it takes for the septic tank to refill with waste. This is only a temporary fix and will not last indefinitely; action must be taken to remedy the situation, moving toward a more permanent solution. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions


1. Rent a backhoe for the day, which should be plenty of time to get the job of digging new lines for your septic tank. Hire someone qualified to drive the backhoe so you don't spend half the day learning operate heavy machinery.


2. Decide where to dig new leach lines. They must be located on undisturbed earth away from the old saturated leach lines. A slope of 1/8 inch per foot is adequate for leaching purposes and ideal for new leach lines.


3. Position the backhoe and begin digging a trench at least 4 feet deep. Repeat the process for the second trench.


4. Place a 4-inch layer of cinders along each leach line. Place the leach lines on the cinder layers. Cover each leach line with a layer of black sheathing.


5. Fill the trenches with the dirt you first removed and tamp down gently. Avoid walking on this part of the yard as the area tends to be softer than the rest of the earth; damage may be done to the actual leach lines, severely compromising the efficacy of the septic tank.

Buy Basic Automotive Tools

Every car owner should have basic tools at home for keeping a car running or for doing minor repairs. Tools should have insulated grips (rubber or plastic-coated) for extra protection. Keep tools in a box where they can stay dry, and clean off grease, dirt and especially water after using them. You'll find many of these tools at hardware stores and auto supply stores.


Instructions


1. Figure out the extent of your capability. There's no need buying a slew of auto-repair tools if your maintenance knowledge is limited. However, that doesn't mean a novice can't repair minor damage.


2. Start simple. Buy a set of adjustable wrenches and a lug wrench, funnels, a jack and jumper cables. Stock up on some cleaning supplies and auto-only towels and rags to deal with oil spills and greasy hands.

How Long Does A Person Have To File A Homeowner'S Insurance Claim

The time limit for filing a homeowners insurance claim differs from company to company and state to state. Successful claim filing must be done quickly to ensure the necessary information and evidence is available. Since it is your responsibility to prove that damage was done at a specific time and date, filing the claim quickly helps you keep the facts straight and the claim complete.


Insurance is Regulated by State


Insurance is regulated by individual states, but most states, including Kansas, do not set time limits on when a home insurance claim can be filed. The Kansas Insurance Commissioner points out that not filing a claim right away could result in the claim being denied, due to loss of evidence or additional damage emerging that overturns the responsibility of the insurance company.


Insurance Company Time Limits


Insurance companies, according to the Homeowners Insurance Guide, set their own time limits for filing a claim. Some companies may set the limit as low as 30 days after the incident, but most companies will give you as much as one year. The time limits set by your insurance company should be clearly stated in your policy, but if you are having trouble finding out where it is listed you can call your insurance agent for more information. Insurance companies may issue an extension for some cases, such as a home that cannot be evaluated for some time after a major storm or catastrophe. If a recent storm has caused widespread damage, insurance companies may extend the time limit to give their appraisers more time to visit customer homes.


Burden of Proof


The burden of proof is your responsibility. If a recent rainstorm damaged your roof, it is your own best interest to get the claim filed as soon as possible so that the storm is fresh in memory, and before the damage has time to escalate into further damage which could be denied coverage under your policy's negligence clause. If an appraiser finds damage that could have been prevented by filing the claim sooner, you could be held responsible for paying the additional repairs out of pocket.


Time is Important


Once you have filed a home insurance claim, the insurance company will have up to 30 days to investigate the initial claim. If problems with settling the claim are found, the insurance company can postpone the settlement for an indefinite period of time, as long as you are notified at least every 60 days that the claim is still under investigation. For insurance companies, time is critical to establishing the cause and minimizing potential damage, especially in situations where the homeowner needs to make repairs quickly to protect the structure of the home from additional damage.

Replace The Headlight Bulb Of A 1997 Ford Aerostar

The 1997 Ford Aerostar was designed with a composite headlight system, which means you only need to replace the bulb when a headlight burns out instead of the entire headlight assembly. Unlike many other composite headlight systems, the headlights on the 1997 Ford Aerostar are removed like a sealed beam headlight system, which requires you to replace the entire headlight assembly. Change your headlight bulb immediately after it burns out to ensure your safety while driving at night or in inclement weather.


Instructions


1. Park the Aerostar on a flat surface and engage the parking brake. Ensure the headlight switch is in the "Off" position.


2. Remove the four screws from the headlight trim using the Phillips screwdriver and pull the trim off of the headlight. Two of the screws are on the top of the trim and two are on the bottom.


3. Unscrew headlight lens retaining screws located on the top and the bottom of the headlight lens and pull the lens out of the front of the vehicle. Do not pull too hard or you may damage the electrical connector.


4. Pull the electrical connector off of the bulb in the headlight lens. You will notice a retaining wire sitting over the back of the bulb, which is used to secure it in the headlight lens.


5. Remove the retaining wire by sliding a flat-head screwdriver underneath it and pulling up.


6. Twist the bulb and pull it straight out of the lens. Discard the old bulb.


7. Insert the new bulb into the headlight lens by lining up the tabs on the bulb with the slots on the headlight lens. Do not touch the glass part of the bulb with your hands. The oils on your skin will shorten the life of the bulb.


8. Push the retaining wire onto the back of the bulb to secure the bulb and plug the electrical connector into the back of the bulb.


9. Slide the headlight lens into the car frame and attach the four lens screws.


10. Reattach the headlight lens trim and attach the four trim screws.


11. Repeat Steps 2 through 10 with the other headlight.

Grants For Home Repairs For Veterans

After serving with honor, many disabled veterans receive needed and deserved home improvement assistance.


After serving the country, many disabled veterans and service members face certain housing and home care challenges, such as difficulty accessing the home or the lavatory. The federal government's Department of Veteran Affairs offers home improvement grants to veterans to help ease some of these challenges.


HISA Grants


The Veterans Administration issues Home Improvement and Structural Alterations grants to veterans with disabilities that require them to install rehabilitative equipment, therapeutic devices and other medical treatment equipment in their homes. HISA Grants provide up to $2,500 for veterans with a disability connected with their service and $600 for veterans with disabilities from other causes.


SAH and SHA Grants


Veterans with debilitating conditions such as paralysis can apply for Specially Adapting Housing grants of up to $50,000. SAH grants are most often used to add wheelchair accessibility to the home. Veterans with slightly less extreme disabilities, such as the loss of both hands or blindness in both eyes, may apply for Special Housing Adaptation grants of up to $10,000 to assist with mobility throughout the home.


TRA Grants


Congress created Temporary Residence Application grants for service members and veterans who do not own their home but instead are staying with family. To qualify, the stay or intended stay must be considered temporary. Those qualifying under SAH grant terms receive up to $14,000, and those qualifying under SHA grant terms receive up to $2,000.

Build Outdoor Concrete Steps

Pouring your own concrete steps is not an easy do-it-yourself project. In most cases, you should leave a project like this to a contractor or handyman to ensure the steps meet city code for rise and run. Preformed wooden stair stringers can make this project possible for the handy homeowner. The stringers come in a variety of sizes and allow you to set out a mold before pouring the concrete. Instructions


1. Level the spot where you intend to put your steps. Dig out excess dirt to level the area and compact firmly with the back of the shovel. Lay the stringers out in their intended location. Slide shims into the ground on either side of the stringers to support them and secure in an upright position.


2. Measure the distance across each step. Cut 2-by-8 lumber to fit across the stringer to form the front of each step. Attach the 2-by-8 piece of wood to the stringer tightly using deck screws. Spread cooking oil across the inside of the stair mold. Greasing will make it easier to remove the boards once the stairs have cured.


3. Purchase premixed concrete from your local home improvement or hardware store. Premixed concrete is a blend of cement, sand and gravel and is a good choice for small home improvement projects like stairs.


4. Shovel the concrete into the mold overfilling slightly. Tamp down the concrete and eliminate bubbles and air pockets with a shovel. Smooth the top of each stair with a trowel. Allow the concrete to cure for 24 to 48 hours. Remove the forms.


5. Coat the steps with a sealer to protect the concrete from moisture. You can find concrete sealer in the paint section of your hardware store. Roll the sealer on the steps with a quarter-inch nap roller.

Prioritize Your Spending


If you're living on a bare bones budget, or trying to make ends meet, a prioritized spending plan is essential. Prioritizing your spending will ensure that your necessary bills are paid in order of importance. The basic human necessities should always be paid first. If you can maintain shelter, food, and utilities, you can live to fight another day and have the strength to tackle the rest. Although creditors breathing down your back is annoying and stressful, they should always be paid after your essential needs are met.


Instructions


1. On a sheet of paper, list all of your monthly expenses (rent, food, utilities, car payments, phone bill, etc).


2. Number in order of importance, the priority of each bill. In other words, if you only have the money to do one thing, what should it be? Hint #1: rent or mortgage is always first.


3. Ask yourself, if I can only do one more thing, what would it be? Hint #2: food is always second.


4. Repeat Step 3 until you've ordered (or prioritized) your entire list.


5. Rewrite your list in numerical order. (Example: 1, 2, 3)

9. If you end up with money left, save it to build an emergency fund. If you end up with a negative number, that means you have a shortfall.


10. In case of a shortfall, look for ways to cut your expenses or increase your income by getting a second job or a new job.
