Use Accessory Feet For Janome Machines

Janome makes sewing machine feet for a variety of stitches and purposes.

The Janome company makes a variety of machines for the home sewer. While its sewing machines are excellent, you can increase their abilities with the variety of accessory presser feet that Janome offers. With more than 60 available feet, all affordable and easy to use, your sewing options are nearly endless. You can ruffle, gather, blind hem and attach buttonholes quickly and easily with Janome's accessory presser feet.

Instructions

1. Select the presser foot you need for your project. With more than 60 feet available, you can preselect the foot you need by visiting the Janome website (See References 1). Contact your Janome dealer to check availability and order your presser foot if necessary (See References 2).

2. Lift your presser foot by raising the black handle to the left of the presser foot bar (See References 3, page 14). Locate the small, round red button on the back of the presser foot bar. Remove the presser foot installed on the machine by pressing the red button. The presser foot will release and drop from the presser foot bar.

3. Gather the presser foot you want to install. There is a small horizontal bar located on the top of the presser foot. Place the presser foot below the presser foot bar with the horizontal bar lined up directly beneath the presser foot.

4. Lower the presser foot bar with the black handle. The top of the presser foot bar connects with the horizontal bar on the presser foot. If they connect correctly, they will click. If you do not hear the click, lift the presser foot up and then down again until you hear the click. You may need to reposition the presser foot.

5. Lift the presser foot up, and thread the machine according to Janome's instructions. Because Janome carries more than 60 different presser feet, directions for use can vary widely. Locate the manufacturer's directions for your newly installed presser foot and practice using it on a piece of scrap fabric until you are confident enough in its operation to start on your main project.

Repair A Bathroom Exhaust Fan

Mold and mildew can build up if you do not have a properly running exhaust fan in the bathroom. The room's design should allow the steam from showers and baths to be pulled up through the fan. While fixing the fan takes a little time and effort, it sure beats trying to clean up from the mildew and smell that accumulate without the fan. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Cut off the electricity to the bathroom before you begin touching the fan or doing any kind of work. Even if you aren't going inside the motor right away, you never know when the problem can turn out to be a design flaw or a loose wire.

2. Remove the cover of the exhaust fan, carefully saving the screws. If the cover has been painted over, loosen it carefully with a putty knife or screwdriver. Be careful not to pull the sheet rock out when you begin pulling.

3. Visually inspect the fan before you begin any further actions. Again, you might be able to see a loose wire and reconnect it, saving money on replacing parts, as well as further aggravation.

4. Unplug and pull out the exhaust fan if you cannot see any problem immediately. It should come loose with just a little pressure. Make sure all screws have been loosened. If there is a bulb in the fan housing, make sure bulb is cool before removing.

5. Bring the motor with you to the hardware store to make sure you get a replacement that will fit in your housing. If you find the correct size, if not the exact model, you can save the hassle of redesigning the bathroom to install a new fan-housing unit.

Do Plumbing With Pex Tubing

Last year my older home had a serious water leak that resulted in major damage. I didn't want to have to face those repairs again, so I decided to replace the plumbing. After receiving a couple of huge quotes, I decided to see if this was something I could do myself. I researched plumbing how-tos and found information on PEX tubing. It seemed simple enough. PEX is flexible, durable and joins easily. The hardest part of the job was getting certified --- in many areas you can't buy PEX without training and certification. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Replumb a Home with PEX Tubing

1. Obtain PEX certification if needed. Many areas require certification to purchase PEX and pass county inspection. The class for certification is short (usually about an hour) and covers apply fittings correctly and to properly use PEX tubing.

2. Planning the job is the most important and time-consuming part of the process. If you are doing a complete replumb, draw a basic outline house plan and determine where all plumbing fittings will be. Include the water heater, the cooling system if it uses water, bathrooms, the kitchen, laundry rooms and outside spigots (and any other areas that will need water). Note each fixture on your house plan.

3. After you decide on all fixtures, plan out the path the water will take. For most fixtures, you will need both hot and cold lines. Exceptions include the toilet, refrigerator water dispenser, and dishwasher if plumbed separately. Determine the path that uses the least number of fittings on your PEX tubing. Keep in mind that PEX is very flexible and does not need fittings to make a diagonal or angled run. Depending on how your floor plan is set up, you can go in one straight line, or you can tee off in different directions.

4. Once the path is set, begin measuring. Measure each run, making sure you include the run up to the fixture. Note the size of PEX tubing you wish to use for each fixture. Some bath faucets need a ¾" tube, while most bath sinks and toilets need ½". It helps to make a list of each measurement, with columns for each size you need. Once you have the measurements added, you know how much PEX tubing you need in each size. Some hardware and plumbing supply stores sell PEX by the foot, and some sell in 50- or 100-foot rolls. This is also the time to determine all the fittings you will need to join the Pex tubing.

5. Cut your PEX ahead of time if you are very sure of your measurements, or cut it as you go. Start at the water inlet, and proceed in the order determined by your house plan. Attach the PEX tubing to the inlet and unroll enough to get to your first fixture. Note: To save time, you can do hot and cold at the same time; just make sure you keep the hot on the left and the cold on the right.

6. If you are working in crawl space, attach support hangers as you run the PEX tubing. If you are working in an attic, tack PEX tubing to the rafters with support hangers.

7. When you get to each fixture, use the appropriate PEX fitting (90-degree, 90-degree reducer) to run the next tube into the wall where the fixture goes. You should already have holes drilled through the subfloor.

8. Once you have run PEX tubing to all your fixtures, make sure each one is closed off and perform a pressure test. Attach a pressure gauge, and introduce pressure into the lines with a compressor. The pressure should remain the same overnight.

9. If pressure holds, you may either call for inspection (if necessary) or introduce water into the system. If pressure does not hold you must find the leak(s). The easiest way to find leaks during a pressure test is to use a spray bottle with a soapy solution. Spray on each joint and if a particular joint has a leak it will create a lot of small bubbles.

10. Rough plumbing is complete at this point. If you have passed inspection, attach necessary fixtures, repair drywall as necessary and enjoy your newly plumbed home.

Repair A Water Damaged Ipod Touch

When your Apple iPod Touch becomes water damaged, whether due to full submersion or excess humidity -- such as when you leave it in the bathroom with you during a long shower, for example -- signs that a problem exists with the device may or may not appear immediately. Regardless of how slowly or quickly symptom show, take quick action to dry out the device to avoid a costly professional repair.

Instructions

1. Hold down the "Home" and "Lock" buttons at the same to turn the device off. Water damage is intensified if electricity flows through an iPod Touch when it has water inside it.

2. Pour a zip-top bag approximately 50 percent full of uncooked white rice. Place the iPod Touch inside the bag, fill the bag with more rice until it's full, then seal it.

3. Leave the iPod Touch in the bag for at least 24 hours.

4. Remove the device from the bag and power it on. If it does not immediately power on, return it to the bag for 24 more hours, then repeat trying to turn it on.

Home Grants For Senior Citizens

Home Grants for Senior Citizens

The recent financial devastation resulting from the national recession and natural disasters has affected every American, especially America’s senior citizens. The Senior Job Bank’s statistics show that many of these seniors are looking for resources and grants to provide financial assistance during hard times because they depend heavily on their relatives and charities to provide the financial support necessary in maintaining their homes. In order to aid these seniors, many community action partnership agencies and non-profit organizations offer local, state and federal program information on various ways to apply for loans and grants that assist with mortgages, rent, refinancing and housing vouchers.

Home Buyer Training Classes

State community action partnership agencies offer monthly first-time home buyer education training for senior citizens. Depending on the program, a specific amount of credit hours from a home buyer training class may be required to be eligible for second mortgage financing or various down payment assistance programs. Home buyers, including seniors, without a mortgage for at least three years may be considered as first-time home buyers.

Section 8 Housing

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is the nation’s housing agency committed to increasing home ownership, particularly among minorities. It also creates affordable housing opportunities for low-income Americans by supporting the homeless, the elderly, people with disabilities and people living with AIDS. In 2005, HUD received $20 million in grants to provide funding for housing projects for the elderly in 38 states. Many local rental programs have open waiting lists for new Section 8 voucher applicants. Seniors can contact their local HUD office and their state community action partnership agency to apply online or by mail.

Housing Resource Expos

Many states host housing resource expos as a way to inform low-income individuals and seniors about housing programs and grants offered by FEMA, HUD and state community action partnership agencies. These expos assist and advise individuals and families who participate in a rental assistance program and housing voucher program, while providing information about other available assistance for transitioning into permanent housing solutions. Residents receiving disaster assistance in homes or trailers are encouraged to attend one of these informational events.

Affordable Home Modification Programs to Prevent Foreclosures

Senior citizen borrowers who have experienced documented hardships and are behind on their mortgage loans may qualify for a reduced mortgage loan by entering into a trial modification for a reduced payment amount. According to Safeguard Properties, Federal Housing Administration (FHA) lenders have been encouraged to contact borrowers who are delinquent, in default or in foreclosure status. If the mortgage was delinquent prior to January 2009 and the lender has not contacted you, please call your lender or loan provider. Eligibility requirements for the FHA Home Affordable Modification Program are in the HUD Mortgagee Letter (ML) 2009-23 called HUD ML 2009-23 Making Home Affordable Program: FHA’s Home Affordable Modification Loss Mitigation Option. The Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Conventional Loans Home Affordable Modification Program guidelines are in Treasury’s Supplemental Directive 09-04.

American Recovery Act Tax Credit

According to HUD, participants in the FHA first-time home buyer program may qualify for an $8,000 tax credit to purchase a home from qualifying banks. These borrowers are allowed to immediately apply the tax credit toward their down payment. For more information, contact your local FHA resource center. The credit applies to home sales that close after April 8, 2008 and before December 1, 2009. This credit will be applied when filing your 2009 taxes in this year.

Housing Counselors

Many state community action partnership agencies have certified housing counselors who provide free counseling to the elderly who have rental needs and who are in the process of transitional living. In addition, these counselors have applications for home repair programs and for furniture, appliances and other housing-related needs. These housing counselors will also assist seniors with preparing housing paperwork.

Mortgage Rescue Programs

Some states have received funds to help individuals and families who are in jeopardy of foreclosure. These homeowners may be eligible to refinance mortgage loans. Homeowners must be able to verify income, be employed for a minimum of two years, must have a debt to income ratio of less than 50 percent and must be in an adjustable-rate or another sub-prime loan. Conventional Fannie Mae homeowners who are in danger of foreclosure can find help at the United States Treasury's office.

Natural Disaster Assistance

Residents affected by natural disasters may qualify for financing or grants for their homes. Some states may offer The Road Home Elevation Incentive that provides grants for site-built homes and for mobile homes. In addition, some states may offer the Homeowners for the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). This award is separate from the Road Home Program. Qualified applicants may be eligible to receive a maximum grant of $20,000 to complete repair or construction of their homes, if they meet income and other guidelines.

Senior Reverse Mortgages Program

Many mortgage companies are offering senior citizens, ages 62 and above, the ability to use the equity for home repair and home rebuilding. Homeowners must prove home ownership and that no payment is due from the homeowner unless the home is unoccupied.

Home and Rental Vouchers

Due to the intervention of non-profit organizations, along with local, state and federal agencies, the opportunities for home ownership have increased. Many Section 8 voucher holders can purchase a home with their vouchers. In addition, the United Way Individual Development Account (IDA) Program is designed to help low-income families save to acquire a home. Program participants saving up to $2,000 will receive a match of up to $8,000 for a maximum total of $10,000 for a home. In addition, some states may offer bond assistance that will pay the down payment and/or closing costs on a home. Contact your local finance authority or community agency for more information on low interest down payment and closing costs assistance funds. Make sure to check with your state community action agency for support services for affordable housing and rental assistance vouchers. Assistance with furniture, food and psychiatric counseling may also be available for qualifying senior citizens.

Home Revitalization

Local affiliates of national nonprofit organizations have restored and revitalized more than 100,000 homes for low income families at no cost to the homeowner. The home rehabilitation programs target the populations most affected by natural disasters and low-income persons in urban communities.

Flat Vs Hourly Rates For Home Repairs

Choose a flat fee or hourly rate to keep costs low.

Depending on the scope of the project, a flat fee or an hourly rate may be more cost-effective for the homeowner. However, the choice must be fair to both the contractor and the owner. Does this Spark an idea?

Flat Fees

When the scope of work is well defined and there is a series of objectives to be met, a flat fee for home repairs is the best form of payment to a contractor.

Hourly Rate

If a home repair project cannot be delineated easily or the requirements are not known, then an hourly rate is best for the owner and contractor.

Comparisons

Both a flat fee and an hourly rate can provide adequate compensation to a contractor for work provided. The flat fee requires a quote for services, and the hourly rate must be provided with an estimate of the number of hours to complete the home repairs. The cost associated with both methods can be revised if there are changes to the scope of a project.

Contrasts

The flat fee requires a contractor to foresee how a project will be completed on budget, whereas an hourly rate allows flexibility when the budget or work required changes. Without revisions to the agreement, a flat fee can be unfair to a contractor if there are additions to the scope of work. However, the owner may be adversely affected if the contractor does not keep to a minimum the hours worked.

Conclusion

Both a flat fee and an hourly rate are appropriate for home repairs. Both the owner and the contractor must agree upon the method chosen, and it must be appropriate for the scope of work. In either case, a written agreement should be made between the two parties.

Basic Heating Repair

Everyone ends up with a split fuse or malfunctioning heater once in a while. Calling the repairman can take days, can be a real hassle and definitely isn't cheap. Basic knowledge of heating repairs can save you time and money. Learning to repair heaters on your own is not that hard, but it's important that you go about it in a consistent and methodical manner to keep from damaging the heater or harming yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Safety Issues

Before you begin any heating repairs, unplug the heater from its electrical socket and make sure your hands are absolutely dry so that you do not get shocked. If you are going to touch a live wire, remember to always wear electrical gloves and rubber shoes. It is never a good idea to stop in the middle of repairing a malfunctioning heater. So before you begin, prepare any tools and accessories, such as screwdrivers, spare plugs and spare fuses.

Different Devices

Some electrical heating devices are easy to handle on your own; others are dangerous and require specialized training. For your safety do not attempt heating repairs on items such as microwaves or gas stoves. However, many malfunctioning heaters are easy to repair, including electric stoves, immersion heaters and space heaters.

Finding Problems

Locate the problem. Search around the entire heater to determine what's wrong. In a malfunctioning heater, for instance, search for disconnected wires, blown fuses, damaged heating filament and damages to the wire that connects the heater to the electrical dashboard.

Fixing Problems

Things you may need to do fix your heater include finding a blown fuse and replacing it with a new one or replacing a worn extension wire with a new one. Open up the heater and reconnect old wires with plugs and bolts, or take apart the thermostat knob and reconnect any loose wires. Purchase a new heating filament to replace a worn one.

Types Of Conveyors

Conveyors and conveyor systems are mechanical equipment that is responsible for transporting materials from one location to another. They provide quick and easy transportation and are particularly useful in moving heavy materials. There are many different types of conveyors depending on the needs of the industry in which they are used. Does this Spark an idea?

History

The conveyor industry began around 1900 in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area when a group of men were unloading wood shingles from rail cars. Part of the group relocated to Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, and started the Mathews Gravity Conveyor Company with Rufus P. Mathews as president. The rest stayed behind and started the Standard Conveyor Company, according to flostor.com. Both original companies focused on the package conveyor business and material handling engineering.

Gravity Conveyors

Gravity conveyors move materials using gravity. In other words, they can move boxes up, down and horizontal on a moving belt using gravity. Gravity allows the conveyor to move certain types of packages, using their own weight on a bed of wheels or rollers.

Features

Gravity conveyors can move anything from light bulbs to bagged cement and can carry materials from 2 feet to 100 feet. The two primary variations of the gravity conveyor are the roller and the wheel conveyor. According to flostor.com, roller conveyors are not recommended for soft bottom materials, such as coffee bean bags, and wheel conveyors should be used instead.

Belt Conveyors

Belt conveyors are used for more controlled movement of materials. They are powered and can be used to move regular and irregular shaped products. They have a wide range of capabilities and can transport light, heavy, fragile packages on an incline, a decline and horizontal surfaces.

More Types

Powered belt conveyors typically have two types of beds. A slider bed utilizes a smooth surface bed, often steel, and a roller bed utilizes rollers as the surface supporters of the belt. Horizontal belt conveyors are flat with either one or two pulleys and the bed section is either slider or roller. Incline and decline conveyors are similar to the horizontal except that they are an angle. The brake belt conveyor is used as a stop at the end of the roller conveyor and a meter belt conveyor is used as the speed up belt, according to flostor.com. Metal Piano Hinge conveyor has a steel belt ideal for carrying hot and oily machinery. The wire mesh belt conveyor allows for free flow of air and is primarily used for transporting materials too cold or too hot for standard conveyors. Finally, a portable conveyor is one that can be rolled from one position to another on caster wheels.

Jack Up Your House To Repair The Foundation

Foundation repairs sometimes require raising the building. This creates a work space for the foundation repairs, and also allows the home to be permanently raised by building a higher foundation before lowering the home. The process involves multiple pieces of heavy equipment and large steel or wood beams. The task is commonly contracted to licensed builders with experience in the field. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Disconnect the home from all utilities. This includes water and sewer pipes and electrical service. Any utility structure that connects the house to the ground needs to be disconnected.

2. Remove any nuts on the anchor bolts between the foundation and the home. Check for any other structures that connect the house to the foundation.

3. Place steel or heavy wood beams under the floor joists of the home. This often involves creating holes through the foundation walls. Place the steel beams perpendicular to the floor joists. Place a beam about every 10 to 20 feet depending on the width of the house.

4. Set a hydraulic jack under the end of each beam. Raise the jacks so the beam is tight against the floor joists.

5. Raise the jacks all at the same time. This requires a little teamwork. Raise the house about an inch and check the beams to make sure everything is in place and the house is not slipping.

6. Pile blocks of wood beams under the end of each beam. Lower the jacks to allow the beams to rest on the blocks. Place additional blocks under the jack and continue to raise the house as needed.

Tv Repair Questions

Televisions often use advanced circuitry that is difficult to repair.

Televisions are central to home theaters and living rooms around the world. They employ different technologies, including traditional vacuum tubes and more modern liquid crystal arrays, to produce picture and sound that increase in quality with each new generation of models. Every type of television is subject to breaking down eventually, and do-it-yourself repairs may be able to keep the set running.

Is It Dangerous?

Repairing a television can be dangerous, depending on the type of set. Older CRT, or cathode-ray tube, televisions include a high voltage circuit that can deliver a powerful electric shock, even when the television has been unplugged for several days or weeks. This only exists in older, non-flat-screen televisions, as modern flat-screen televisions have no use for the high voltage circuit.

With the television case open, it's easy to identify the high voltage circuit. It is an enclosed assembly in the television with a long, thick red wire leading out of it. The wire leads to an anode cap on the back of the television tube, which is the large, pyramid-shaped component that connects the screen and electron gun. Avoiding the high voltage circuit, or wearing insulated gloves, will make it safe to proceed with the repair job.

How Do I Diagnose Problems?

Troubleshooting a television to diagnose problems is the first step in the repair process. It is largely a matter of isolating the problem through the process of elimination. Poor picture or sound quality can have many causes, including loose or wet cables and a problem at the broadcast source. If the problem shows up on multiple televisions in the home, it's likely not a problem with the television itself. Replacing cables and remote batteries can also help isolate problems to the television. Television owners manuals often include a section on troubleshooting, which may include instructions for resetting the television to its original specifications.

What Are the Easiest Fixes?

If the problem appears to be with the television rather than the cables or service, it's best to start by looking for the easiest fixes. Opening the television's casing with a screwdriver and heat gun will reveal any frayed or corroded wires, which should be replaced before proceeding. If the problem only affects the audio, installing new speakers may be a relatively easy and inexpensive fix. For a picture that shows static or displays unusual color tints, running a degaussing wand over the screen can help to dispel magnetic buildup on the picture tube and restore the picture to a normal state.

Is It Worth It?

As televisions that use older technology continue to decline in price, and new models incorporate digital technology, there are fewer and fewer options for do-it-yourself repair. Modern flat-screen televisions are often difficult to open, let alone service, without special tools and expertise. Short of making a simple repair on an older set, buying a new model may actually be a more cost-effective solution. Electronic repair technicians may be able to advise television owners on whether or not repairs are worth the effort, or are likely to solve the problem at all. A long-term manufacturer's warranty may be the best way to ensure that a new television will continue to function properly for many years.

File An Insurance Claim For Roof Hail Damage

Hail can cause significant roof damage.

If you live in an area that receives large hail that can cause damage to your home and personal property, it is helpful to know the claims process and what to expect. When your area has experienced a hail storm, inspect your personal property to see if any damage occurred to your vehicles, siding, shutters or wood fences. This can help you determine if roof damage may have happened. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Write down the date of the hail storm and take pictures of the hail that resulted from this storm. If you were unable to capture pictures, do a quick search online in your location to find news pictures of the hail that fell in your area. Save this information so you can show your insurance agent.

2. Obtain written estimates from several roofing companies and have them confirm the damage is from hail. When the roofing company puts together the estimate, ensure they differentiate which damage is from wear and tear and which damage is from the recent hail storm. Also advise them to inspect other items on your property that may have been damaged from the hail such as AC units, tools, windows and screens. Choose a local contractor with a good reputation in the event the company needs to return for additional work that needs to be completed. Ask if they are willing to be present when the insurance adjuster comes out to your home.

3. Investigate the specific policy and your state regulations to ensure that your insurance company does not drop you for filing a claim for this damage. It is prohibited in most states for an insurance company to cancel your policy due to severe weather-related events that lead to damages.

4. File the claim with your insurance company. When you call and speak with a representative, give them the date the damage occurred and offer to send over the pictures you have as well as the estimates from the roofing companies. The insurance company will still send someone out, but it helps that you are offering this information up front.

5. Meet with the adjuster at the scheduled time. After you have filed the claim, you will be contacted about meeting with the adjuster. If possible, have a representative from one of the roofing companies come out to meet with the adjuster so they can compare notes. Once the adjuster has spoken with the contractor, they will provide you with the settlement amount at that time, or they may have to review the notes further.

6. Complete the work as soon as possible after your claim has been approved. If you are approved for the full amount, your insurance company will send you a check for that amount, less the deductible, so you can get the work done. Sometimes the insurance company may not approve the full amount and in this case, the contractor will need to dispute the settlement.

7. Cash in on any rewards or benefits the contractor is offering you. This could range from an advertising fee to place a yard sign on your property, or you could receive a referral fee from sending the company additional customers. It is vital that you understand the difference between working directly with the contractor for these benefits and receiving rebates and kickbacks. It is illegal to receive rebates and kickbacks.

Repair A Basement Floor

Concrete floor repair and refinishing

A basement is an added bonus to any home, not only adding square footage to the home, but also providing space for storage or entertainment. Unfinished basements typically have concrete floors. Sometimes the concrete can become cracked. Repairing a crack in a concrete floor requires little home improvement knowledge or experience, and few supplies or tools. You can patch the floor with a concrete crack filler. Use hydraulic cement in areas prone to water or moisture. Patching these basement cracks and sealing out water will prevent excess moisture and the growth of mold or mildew. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Power wash the basement floors and walls with hot water. Remove the water reservoir tank and fill with hot water. Replace the tank and attach the 3,000 PSI nozzle tip to the power washer wand. Turn on the power washer. Standing about 3 or 4 feet away, clean the walls first, spraying slowly back and forth until you have washed the entire wall. Then, starting in the farthest corner of the basement, spray the floor to remove any buildup of dirt or debris. Continue washing the floor with the same back and forth motion towards the exit until the floor is completely clean.

2. Let the floor dry for at least 24 hours. Concrete is a porous material; if it is not completely dry before you apply the filling compound, the concrete filler will not bond to the cement.

3. Use a putty knife to apply the concrete filler to any cracks. Push the filler into the cracks as much as possible until the crack's surface is once again level with the rest of the floor.

4. Allow the filling compound to cure for at least 48 hours. Sand the floor for a smoother, more even finish, if desired.

5. Finish the basement floor as desired. You can polish, stain, or engrave concrete basement floors. Depending on the floor's finish, it's best to paint the floors and walls with a water sealer before painting or covering with carpet or other material, in order to "lock" out water.

Start A Lawnmower Repair Business

A lawnmower repair business can serve as a part-time sideline for talented mechanics or can be used to provide a lucrative full-time income. With a few mechanical abilities and the desire to succeed, anyone can start a lawnmower repair business. While each brand of lawnmower may have its peculiarities, the majority of the machines follow a standard mechanical template. Basically, you need to understand how gas and electric engines operate, sharpen (and replace) blades and find customers. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Consider how you will attract and retain business. A complete business plan includes a marketing strategy and a realistic budget. It should provide measures to handle seasonal ups and downs. A business plan must be put into writing after your initial consideration.

2. Get a garage or building where you can work. Check with your municipality to find out what kinds of permits and regulations must be purchased and followed to operate out of your home garage to save money on commercial rent. Zoning rules are typically kept by the city or county clerk's office. They are available in the local library or online at a town's Website. A county attorney or adviser from the planning department also can provide information about running a lawn repair business from a home garage.

3. Purchase the necessary tools you'll need to perform the repairs. In addition to wrenches and screwdrivers, you might consider buying electrical testing equipment and commercial blade sharpening tools. Find updated copies of the most popular manuals so that you'll be prepared to work on any kind of machine.

4. Find a supplier of wholesale parts and materials such as Mowpart.com or K&T. Lawn mower service manuals and parts also can be purchased through "Team Wholesale" on eBay. Many lawnmower manufacturers offer special rates to professional repair companies. Look for a supplier that will give you discounts so that you can build a profit into the resale of the parts.

5. Set your rates. After working on a few of your own lawn mowers you should have a good idea of how long it takes to perform each task. Build in time for snags and difficult repair jobs. Most repair companies charge by the job instead of the hour. Tell your customers that you will call them if a job looks like it will be more involved than the original quote will cover.

6. Advertise in the local papers and magazines that are read by homeowners in your area. Talk to your friends and neighbors as well as members of any community groups in which you participate. Word of mouth is always the best form of advertising.

7. Build a relationship with local lawn care companies and garden centers. By sending them referrals, you can ask for referrals in return. Leave your cards with any businesses that may be in touch with homeowners and commercial lawn care companies.

3. Look for state grant programs specific to the state in which you live. For example, residents of Maine can apply to the Financial Authority of Maine for financial assistance under a variety of grants.

4. Visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture for grants for housing and home repairs. If you are over 62 years old and live in a rural area, you can apply for the USDA's Section 504 grant program for funds to do home improvements. Use this money for repairs to make the home safe and sanitary, such as damp proofing, heating and wiring.

5. Contact the United Health Care Children's Foundation (uhccf.org) for information on medical grants for children. The 501 (c) 3 charity provides funds for treatment not covered by commercial health benefits. If you have a child under 16 years old who needs medical care, you may qualify for financial assistance under this program.

6. Download the grant application package for the Self-Help Home Ownership Program from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's website. Introduced in 2011, this program helps nonprofit and community groups purchase land and build homes for their members.

7. Gather the documentation that you need for the applications. This may include proof of income or unemployment status, proof of identity, your monthly budget and written quotations for the home repairs, medical treatment or education for which you need funding.

8. Complete the applications for the grants to which you are applying. Make sure you describe your situation clearly in the application, and check your spelling and grammar to be certain it is understandable.

9. Submit the application. Most forms can be completed and submitted online, although you may have to scan or fax your supporting documentation to send with it. If necessary, take your documentation to the local office of the organization to which you are applying and submit it in person.

10. Wait for the response. This may take some time and you will need to be patient, so apply well in advance for the grants you want.

Deal With Insurance & Mechanics After An Accident

Insurance companies and mechanics should help you recover from an accident.

Dealing with insurance and mechanics should not add trauma to the shock of a car accident. To avoid expensive misunderstandings, follow instructions from your insurance claims adjuster or agent. Reputable repair shops have experience dealing with insurance companies and are familiar with the claims process. You can usually choose your own mechanic but might receive faster service or other benefits if you use a repair shop recommended by your insurance company.

Instructions

Call Your Insurance Company

1. Obtain insurance and contact information from other parties involved in the accident. Write down names and telephone numbers of witnesses. File a police report and ask obtain a copy of the official accident report. Write your own account of the accident as soon as possible and take photos if you can.

2. Call your insurance company immediately. Call your insurance agent or the claims department. Give details of the accident, injuries and physical damage to your vehicle. Be honest and frank but do not admit or assign fault.

3. Review the coverages and deductibles on your policy. Verify whether your policy covers damage to your vehicle, towing or the expense of a rental vehicle while your car is being repaired. Make sure you understand what is and is not covered and the total amounts you will be reimbursed.

4. When the claims adjuster calls you, write down her name, direct telephone number and the claim number. Ask how many estimates you must obtain and whether you must take your car to a specified repair shop. Tell your insurance agent if you do not hear from the claims adjuster within one day or if you need helping sending documents or photos to the claims adjuster.

Repairs

5. Take your car to an automotive shop for a repair estimate. Keep a copy of all estimates. Send the estimates and photos to your claims representative if the repair shop does not send them directly.

6. Wait for authorization from your claims adjuster before you tell the repair shop to proceed with repairs. Find out exactly what the insurance company will pay for and what you will be responsible to pay. Ask the claims adjuster to explain any differences between the estimate and what the insurance company will pay.

7. Ask the claims adjuster whether the insurance company will pay the repair shop directly or reimburse you. Find out what evidence of repairs is needed for the insurance payment to be released. Make sure the repair shop submits documents and photos as soon as the repair work is complete.

Final Considerations

8. Pay any policy premiums due during the claims process. Ask your agent whether to expect a premium increase on your next renewal.

9. Pick up your car after repairs are complete. Ask to see parts that were replaced and make sure you are satisfied with the quality of repair work. Verify the insurance company has closed the claim.

10. Review coverages and the premium when your policy renews. If repairs were costly, your premium might increase but your current insurance company might still give you a better rate than a new company would.

Liability Insurance For A Home Repair Worker

When you hire a contractor to work in your home, you could be taking on a risk without even knowing it. To limit this risk, it's important to hire a repair worker who has the proper type of liability insurance coverage. Without this type of insurance, the financial liability shifts over to you and your insurance.

Liability Insurance Coverage

Contractors who work in customers' homes are typically required to carry some type of liability insurance coverage. This type of coverage helps cover any accidents that occur as a result of the work that's done. For example, if the worker drops a tool from the roof and hits someone walking by your house, his liability insurance coverage covers this damage. This way, you don't have to worry about filing a claim with your homeowner's insurance if something happens.

Liability Coverage Limits

When a contractor begins working, he must purchase a minimum amount of liability insurance coverage. For example, your state might have a limit of $50,000 in property damage and $200,000 in general public liability. If the contractor doesn't have this amount of coverage, he's in violation of your state's rules. Although this minimum amount of coverage may not cover all of the damage caused by the contractor, it at least provides some payment for damages, and you can file lawsuits for any additional costs.

Getting a Copy

When you hire a home repair worker to come to your house, get a copy of the liability insurance coverage that he carries. Legitimate contractors should be willing to give you a copy of this information. This way, if an accident happens on your property, you can simply contact the contractor's insurance company to make sure that the claim is being handled. Without this information, you have to rely on the contractor's word that it's being handled.

Considerations

Besides asking for a copy of the general liability insurance policy, you should also find out if the individual has workers' compensation insurance. This type of insurance protects you if the contractor or a member of her crew is injured while on the job. If the contractor doesn't have this type of insurance, she may sue you for damages. In that case, you would have to file a claim with your homeowner's insurance or pay any judgments out of your own pocket.

Renegotiate A House Offer After An Inspection

After a price has been negotiated for a home and both parties have agreed to the terms and conditions of the sale, there's still work to be done. An independent property inspector will be dispatched to evaluate every aspect of the home. His assessment will be used by the purchaser and his lenders to ensure that the property is in decent condition. Once a property inspection has taken place, it's within the buyer's rights to try to renegotiate their offer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Compile the results of your home inspection. Make a list of all the problematic issues and decide which issues you want addressed before the purchase is finalized.

2. Discuss these issues with your real estate agent. Together, you can decide whether the homeowner should rectify these issues or if you should handle the repairs yourself and adjust your purchase offer to reflect those expenses.

3. Formulate a new offer for the house. Estimate how much it will cost you to make any repairs and deduct that amount from your offer. You may want to contact a contractor or construction expert to get a firm idea of how much these renovations will cost.

4. Formally enter your counter offer with the sellers. Allow them time to consider your offer and any concerns you may have about the condition of the property.

5. Refuse the seller's offer to address the house repairs on his own. It will be in the seller's interest to make repairs as quickly and cheaply as he can. That might not be in your best interest as a buyer.

6. Stay near your phone, as the seller's response could come quickly. It may be in her interest to renegotiate the sale as quickly as possible so she can close the deal and get her money.

Troubleshooting A Sears Water Softener

Water softeners remove minerals like calcium and magnesium, which makes your water "hard." Hard water requires more soap to clean dishes and clothes. It also leaves residue on your sinks, tubs and in your toilet. A Sears water softener removes the hard minerals from your water and replaces them with sodium.

If your Sears water softener doesn't seem to be operating correctly, it may be time to have it serviced. Before you call a professional, however, there are a few things you can do to troubleshoot your Sears water softener. Does this Spark an idea?

No Soft Water

If your water is not soft, it could be for several reasons. First, make sure that you have salt in the tank. Replace salt, as necessary, and start the regeneration system. If the salt level was fine, make sure you do not have a salt "bridge." To remove a salt bridge, use a broom handle and break up the salt in several places. If there was a bridge, be sure to run a regeneration cycle.

If neither of these were the issue, check the nozzle and venturi. Make sure they are clean, and that there are no obstructions. Locate these parts with the help of you owner's manual. Clean them with a soft toothbrush with a soap and water mixture. Rinse them thoroughly before reinstalling.

Water Is Harder

Make sure that the water hardness selector is set correctly. If it seems too hard, adjust it to a softer level. Check again for salt "bridges" in your tank. Sometimes bridges will form and it will appear that you have more salt than you actually do. Use the handle of a broom to break bridges down.

Using hot water while the softener is in the regeneration mode will cause your water to be harder. If your water heater is filling up while the regeneration is going, it is filling with hard water. This is why most people set the regeneration timer for early in the morning while they are still asleep.

Tank Full Of Water

Make sure that the drain line is not plugged up anywhere. Follow the line from the tank to the outside of the house. During the winter, if part of your drain line is exposed outside, cover it with old blankets, or attach pipe insulating foam around it to keep water from freezing.

Check the nozzle and venturi just as you would if the water is not soft. If these parts are obstructed, it will cause the tank to fill with water and not drain properly.

Government Grants For The Elderly To Fix Up A Home In Mobile Alabama

Grants are available to help elderly homeowners in Mobile repair their properties

Elderly homeowners living in Mobile, Alabama who need funds for home repair can apply for grants from several government sources to cover renovation costs that include labor and administrative expenses and equipment purchases. Generally these grants do not have to to be repaid by the recipients, but some programs will recoup the funds if the terms of the grant agreements have not been met.

Mobile County Government

The county government of Mobile, Alabama makes several grant programs available for elderly homeowners needing to make home repairs. The county government receives federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and also the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA). HUD awards its grants from its Community Development Block Grant funds, and ADECA provides awards from its Neighborhood Stabilization Program.

Weatherization Assistance Program

The U.S. Department of Energy funds a Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) to help low-income homeowners, including the elderly, save money on their utilities. This program covers weatherization services such as replacing windows, heating, cooling and electrical systems, adding weatherstripping to doors and insulating walls and ceilings. These services are provided free of charge. The program limits project costs to $6,500 per home.

The Very Low-Income Housing Repair Program

Elderly homeowners in rural areas of Mobile County, Alabama can apply for home-repair grants through their state's office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). If they sell their homes within that time period, the grant program may recoup the funds.

Housing Preservation Grant Program

Troubleshooting American Harvest Pellet Stoves

Troubleshooting American Harvest Pellet Stoves

American Harvest Error Codes

"Err1" means the high limit switch tripped. Check for adequate ventilation, then check that the fan is working and that nothing is blocking the exhaust. "Err2" means you are out of fuel. If you have fuel in the hopper, either the auger has jammed or the fire wasn't burning hot enough and went out. You'll get an "Err3" when the stove doesn't get hot enough fast enough, and the causes are the same as the "Err2." Make sure the auger is working and get a hot fire going. "Err4" is for power failure--check your service panel and the stove wiring. "Err5" through "Err8" happen when a fuse blows in (respectively) the auger, the agitator, the draft fan or the room fan. If a fuse blows, it means the device has either jammed or failed.

Whistling

If your stove starts to whistle when it gets very hot, call American Harvest Customer Service at (800) 750-2723 and they will send you something to eliminate the noise.

Loose or Jammed Auger

When the auger is loose, it has slipped too far forward. Turn the auger while pushing it back---you'll feel it slide in place and you won't be able to turn the auger anymore. When the auger jams, take it out and clean it. Frequent auger jams are caused by poor quality fuel---high-quality pellets allow your stove to operate as efficiently as possible.

Lazy Flame and Fuel Buildup

When you see lazy orange flames and the fuel building up rather than burning off, you need to shut down the stove and clean out the burnpot and burnpot housing. Tap the firebox walls and clean behind the lower access plates. Check the exhaust system next to make sure the fan is moving the air, and clean out the system if necessary. When you run the stove, make sure the door is completely sealed and that nothing is blocking the intake or exhaust.

Window Gets Black

A black, sooty window is caused by one of two things. When you run the stove, be sure to open the damper enough so that the fuel burns completely. If you have your damper open and the fuel still isn't burning, it means that the fuel is too wet. Keep a week's supply of fuel in your house at all times during the heating season so it has a chance to dry out before you use it.

Unit Cycles Up and Down

This usually happens when the stove is about to overheat. Turning the temperature setting down will solve the problem.

Volunteer Activities For The Elderly Handicapped

Disabilities and handicaps provide opportunities for employees and volunteers to be creative.

Elderly, handicapped individuals are often unfairly discriminated against in American and global society. Many have disabilities that fall within certain categories, such as cognitive, sensory, emotional, physical and neurological. While the handicapped senior may be unable to participate in specific tasks, she can serve in many types of volunteer roles that work around the specific disability.

Quiet Activities

Hospitals contain chronically and terminally ill children and adults who welcome opportunities to interact with different people. An elderly, handicapped volunteer can read to a child or color and make sketches. Volunteers can also play card or board games with adult patients, or provide cordial conversation.

Light-duty Work

Elderly, disabled volunteers with slight physical limitations can perform clerical tasks such as answering phones and filing papers. Other duties might include greeting clients, providing them with directions or dispensing information about the company. Many office tasks can be relegated to a seated position, so these job functions are generally not demanding.

Fundraising Initiatives

Many elderly, disabled persons were once vital members of organizations and could offer substantive, creative suggestions for fundraisers and other special events. Allowing volunteer opportunities to be extended to the elderly and handicapped is a great way to boost self-esteem and restore a sense of self-worth. Volunteers can help distribute promotional information about the company's fundraising initiatives and events.

Replace A Concrete Driveway

Replacing a concrete driveway involves removal of the old materials, grading the area and installing the new surface. For a driveway that will last a long time, prepare the ground properly by including a gravel bed and metal supports, apply the correct depth of concrete and include isolation joints to prevent cracks. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Building the Driveway

1. Remove the old driveway. The concrete needs to be broken with a jackhammer or a small bulldozer that smashes the concrete and lifts it into a dump truck or dumpster that will be hauled away.

2. Determine specifications for the new driveway. Decide if it will fit into the same footprint as the old driveway, or if it needs to be longer or wider. Driveways for one-car garages should be at least 10 feet wide. A two-car driveway should be 16 to 24 feet.

3. Prepare the ground. After creating the width and depth (see Steps 4 and 5), smooth the soil surface. The best way to do this is with a hand controlled roller barrel or a driver-controlled rolling machine.

4. Create water runoff. The land should slope gently away from the garage. Slope at least one-quarter inch per foot. A rise greater than one and three-quarter inches per foot will cause most cars to hit the bottom of the rear bumper on the driveway. If the slope is higher at the street and lower at the garage, a drain and drainage channel needs to be installed in front of the garage to divert water.

5. Install the gravel bed and support metal. For six-inch thick slabs, the depth should be at least eight inches (six to eight inches for four-inch thick slabs) to accommodate a four-inch gravel bed and raising the slab two inches above the grade. The gravel improves drainage. A metal mesh frame or individual steel rods can be installed at this point to add additional support to the concrete that will be poured and cured.

6. Design the slabs. To prevent water from flowing into a garage, the slabs butting against the garage floor should be about one inch below that of the garage floor. Slabs should be at least four inches thick for cars and at least six inches for heavy trucks. If the soil is soft or drainage is poor, add another one or two inches.

7. Create the forms in which to pour the concrete. For six-inch slabs, use 2 x 6 borders to create the forms. Pour the individual concrete slabs and smooth the concrete with a wood float.

8. Control cracks. Set isolation joints where the drive meets the garage, walkways, the street and other slabs. The joints should be no more than 10 feet apart. A longitudinal control joint should be included down the middle of the driveway. Cut joints at least one-quarter of slab depth.

Trampoline Specs

Endless fun while jumping on a trampoline.

Trampolines, those iconic bastions of childhood, evoke memories of warm happy summers and split-second weightlessness. Modern times have evolved the trampoline even further into a tool for weight loss and an official Olympic sport. Whether the springs of a trampoline are rebounding an 8-year-old or an Olympian into mid-air, enjoyment can be had.

History

Trampolines, in various forms, have long withstood the test of time in many cultures. USA Gymnastics notes, "Trampoline and tumbling can be traced to archaeological drawings in ancient China, Egypt and Persia." There is photographic evidence of Eskimo cultures in later time periods using skins to bounce people in the air for celebration and entertainment. In the 1930s, George Nissen, with the help of Larry Griswold, created what we know as the modern portable trampoline. Trampolines were utilized in World War II for troop training, and after that for the training of astronauts. Trampoline competitions began in the late 1940s and trampolining became an Olympic sport in 2000.

Recreational Design

Basic trampolines are constructed of a metal frame, with canvas or another similar material held in the frame by a number of springs. This design is placed on metal legs, and surrounded by padding or a net-like enclosure. Some trampolines have an upright bar included to hold onto when jumping. Recreational or backyard trampoline frames, legs and springs are generally constructed of light metals that include steel for strength. Their jumping mats can be waterproof. Round, octagonal and rectangle are common backyard trampoline shapes, that range in size from 6 to 16 feet in diameter. Some modern recreational trampolines do not use springs, but rather fiberglass rods that are placed underneath the jumping mat. These trampolines are purported to be safer than the traditional trampoline.

Competition Design

The most expensive, safely designed, and strongest trampolines are made for the Olympic sport, and also for divers, circus performers, and skiers to use as training tools. Olympic or competition trampoline jumping mats are made from the most porous material, to allow for air flow that increases bounce. They also are made with thicker side padding than regular trampolines to provide extra safety. Competition trampolines are most always rectangular, a shape that encourages the most rebound, and 14 to 17 feet in length. Competition trampolines have the most springs of any of the trampoline designs to provide the most bounce.

Exercise Design

The mini trampoline is most often used for exercise. Mini trampolines are characterized by a small frame that can be taken apart and stored if needed. They most often have an upright bar to hang onto when exercising. Mini trampolines generally range from 35 inches to 50 inches in diameter. Increased balance and low impact are benefits of working out on a mini trampoline.

Safety

While trampolines are fun and an excellent source of exercise, they also can be dangerous. If not used properly and with supervision, trampolines can cause serious injuries, including damage to the spine or head and broken bones. Trampoline injuries are common. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission "estimates that in 2001 there were 91,870 hospital emergency room-treated injuries associated with trampolines". Install a safety fence, allow only one person to jump at a time, inspect your trampoline regularly for loose or weak parts and always supervise trampoline use to reduce the risk for injuries.

Put Block Skirting Around A Manufactured Home

A manufactured home is sturdy and relatively easy to maintain, but if the underside of the home is not protected by a curtain wall (i.e., skirted), then you may have problems. Pets and animals can damage insulation under your home, pipes can freeze, wind-blown debris can build up, and children can be tempted into dangerous places. There are many materials available to skirt your manufactured home, but a cinder block wall is the sturdiest and most permanent. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Check your homeowners ordinances and insurance. Skirting is prohibited in some communities, while in others it is required or limited to certain choices of materials.

2. Determine whether you want the sturdiness of a cinder block skirt, or just the look. If your concerns are only aesthetic, investigate panels designed to look like block or brick, often made of resin, foam or pumice. Two prominant brand names are Nailite and Pumcrete.

3. Pour a concrete footing for your skirt wall directly under your manufactured home's perimeter. The footing should be twice the width of the blocks you intend to use (i.e., 16 inches wide for 8-inch blocks) and deeper than the frost line where you live. Stake footings from 2x4s and allow for drainage and utility lines.

4. Build your wall on your concrete footers. Since a skirt wall is not intended to be load-bearing, dry blocks can be stacked a few levels high, or you can lay courses of block using mortar similar to building a concrete wall.

5. Finish your block skirt with stucco, brick veneer, plastic stone or outdoor paint.

Disconnect the mattress from the air hose and cap it (caps come with your purchase). Allow the mattress to remain untouched for 48 hours, then lay down on it to see how it feels. If it feels softer than your usual setting, you may have a problem with your air chamber. To test a dual-chamber bed, inflate both chambers to a Sleep Number setting of 100; then, press the "L" or "R" button followed by the "Up" arrow button to launch the system's diagnostic test (you'll know this has worked because you'll see the number "20" on the remote's display). Wait about 20 minutes until the diagnostic test has finished, then record the results. If the display reads "No" following this test, your air chambers are not leaking air. If the display reads "LL" (as in, "Loss Left") or "LR" (for "Loss Right"), then the air chamber indicated is leaking. Contact customer service for a replacement air chamber at 1-888-580-9237.

Reinstalling Your New or Repaired Part

5. Reinstall an air chamber into your Select Comfort Sleep Number bed by first removing the mattress's foam pad and mattress cover (the cover will unzip; the pad can be lifted off the air chambers). Place the air chamber into the appropriate slot (left or right if you have a dual-chamber bed); the hose connector on the chamber should face the head of the bed. Insert the hose for the firmness control system into the chamber. Press the "Up" arrow on your remote to gradually increase the amount of air flowing into the chamber.

6. Reinsert the air hose into the base of the mattress at the head of your bed. If you had the right hose replaced, slide it into the hole marked "R", for the left hose, slide it into the "L" hole. Reconnect it to the appropriate air chamber by inserting the hose into the chamber and gradually beginning the inflation process.

7. Plug the firmness control system's power cord into a working electrical outlet. Connect the system to the hose (or hoses) by sliding them into the appropriate slot until they are tight and do not wiggle. Turn the unit on, and begin re-inflating the mattress.

8. Place the new O-ring in the location where the damaged one was (the base of the head of the bed, where the air hose exited the mattress). Remove the air hose. Remove the adhesive backing from the O-ring and stick it into place. Hold it there for several minutes in order for it to adhere completely. Reinsert the air hose and re-inflate the mattress.

Create A Home Repair Estimate

Creating a home repair estimate involves going through a home and trying to calculate the cost that it would take to perform general repairs. This figure needs to take into consideration both the cost of replacement parts and materials plus labor. The labor cost involves the fee the homeowner will be paying to a contractor hired to do the repair job, if a contractor is needed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Find out the materials needed to complete your home repair job. If you're replacing a damaged floor with new tile, for example, you'll need the tile itself as well as any required materials to install the title (which will change based on the nature of the job). To fix the insulation around the windows in your home, you will need new insulation material like caulking. Write down all your required materials.

2. Go through the list of materials from Step 1 and find prices for everything you wrote down. If you need new tile, for example, go to a hardware store and price out the tile you'll need. You can also find this information online for materials and tools that are sold over the Internet. If you have to rent or buy a specific tool to complete your home repair job, write down the cost of renting or buying the tool in question. If you're not sure what you need to do a specific job, ask an expert.

3. Factor in man-hours. If you're creating an estimate for someone else on work you will be completing, look over the job and try to determine how long it will take you to complete. Then, multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours it will take you to finish your work. If you're hiring your own contractor, multiply their hourly rate by the number of hours it will take them to complete the job. In both situations, it may also be possible to negotiate a flat fee for service (which means there is one price, no matter how long it takes), but that will depend on the contractor or your own preferences (if you are the contractor).

4. Add up your cost of materials and your cost for labor. The price you are left with is a reasonable, ballpark estimate for how much it will take to finish a home repair job.

Repair The Surround On A 5 1 Stereo

You can correct your own surround sound system.

Surround sound speaker systems use anywhere from five to seven speakers (plus an additional subwoofer) to create a fully surround audio experience. When using a 5.1 surround sound system you may encounter occasional problems, ranging from some speakers not working to the direction of the audio being off. All of these problems can be corrected by first inspecting the system itself.

Instructions

1. Look over the wires running from the speakers into the "In" ports on the surround sound receiver. Make sure the wires are completely inserted into the connection ports. If not, the speakers are not going to receive the audio signal.

2. Make sure you have the speakers connected to the correct speaker ports on the receiver. Each speaker has a specific position in a 5.1 surround sound. There is one center channel, a front left, front right, rear left and rear right. If the speaker is connected to the wrong audio connection port (such as the center channel being connected to the front left audio port) the audio from the surround sound receiver is played through the wrong speaker, which throws off the entire surround sound experience.

3. Turn down the audio. If the audio is too high the speakers are going to crackle and play distorted audio.

4. Replace the fuse in the rear of the surround sound receiver. When too much power is generated in the receiver the fuse blows out. The exact fuse required is stated in the receiver's user manual. You may purchase the replacement at most audio/video stores and the location you purchased the equipment from.

Save On The Gas Bill In A Mobile Home

Mobile home owners can lower the cost of heating with natural gas.

Mobile homes are the most likely of all types of home to heat with natural gas, according to the Energy Kids website. Because they are not as air-tight as many single-dwelling homes, this can be a drain on the family budget. Mobile-home occupants often rent and do not want to spend a lot of money on expensive improvements that help lower the gas bill. Many ways exist to help trailer-park occupants use less natural gas in keeping the home warm and cozy, thus reducing this expense. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Turn down your thermostat at night and during the day as well if all the occupants are at work or school. Don't set it above 68 degrees Fahrenheit in the daytime. Use extra blankets on your beds at night and use cozy throws to snuggle under while watching TV.

2. Open the drapes on your south-facing windows during the daytime. This allows sunlight to warm the mobile home, and because the the homes are generally not large, it does an effective job. Trim shrubs that block the southern exposures to allow the sunlight to enter the home.

3. Check the weather stripping around all your windows and doors. If it is non-existent or worn, replace it with new weather stripping. This simple method is inexpensive, only takes a few minutes of time and effectively lowers your heating bill by keeping warm air inside the home and preventing cold-air drafts.

4. Seal your windows and any glass on your doors with heavy, clear plastic sheeting. You can find this at hardware, discount or home supply stores. Tape it snugly to the inside of your window frames to prevent cool drafts from entering your mobile home.

5. Check the water temperature of your water heater in your mobile home. It only needs to be at 120 degrees Fahrenheit to do an effective cleaning job in your washing machine or dishwasher. Hold your hand under the hot water running from the faucet. If you are unable to keep it there, the water is too hot.

6. Insulate your water heater with a water heater blanket. These are inexpensive and save you money on your gas bill.

7. Use the exhaust fans in your bathroom and kitchen only when you see condensation forming on your windows. They remove excess moisture in the air from cooking and showering, but they also remove warm air from the room.
