Michigan Lowincome Assistance Programs

Michigan's Department of Public Health has a variety of programs available to assist low-income families with cash, food, child care and medical services. All of Michigan's programs have income eligibility guidelines. Some programs are only for children.

Family Independence Program

Michigan has programs to assist with heating costs.

The Family Independence Program provides cash assistance to families with dependent children or pregnant women. The temporary assistance is to be used for living expenses including rent, food, utilities, clothing and personal care items.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program

Michigan has three energy assistance programs. One program provides assistance with heating costs. Another program provides emergency payment assistance with a utility bill or for home repairs relating to utilities. The third program provides assistance with the cost of weatherizing a home.

Food Assistance Programs

The Food Assistance Program provides families with assistance buying food. Foods ineligible for purchase include alcoholic beverages, tobacco products and foods made for immediate consumption. The Women, Infant, and Children's assistance program provides food assistance to young children and pregnant women.

Child Care Services

Child care cost assistance is available. To qualify the child care must be needed for employment, high school completion, or treatment activity for social or health conditions. Child care services must be provided by eligible providers such as licensed day care facilities, registered home day care providers, registered home visit adult day care aids, or adult relative care providers (such as grandparents) approved by the Department of Health.

Medical Services

Medical programs are available to the disabled, elderly and family caretakers. Programs for pregnant women, children and families are also available.
