Change Verizon Cell Phones Online (And Keep The Same Number)

Keep an old phone on hand as a spare for unexpected situations.

Most cell phones compatible with the Verizon Wireless mobile network do not have a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card that can be moved from an old phone to a new one, so swapping Verizon phones means that you must either call Verizon or use Verizon's online phone-activation service. Online activation is convenient and does not require long wait times or the assistance of a Verizon associate. Log in to your Verizon account and use the online activation Web pages to quickly swap phones when desired.

Instructions

1. Power down your current Verizon phone as well as the new phone you want to activate.

2. Open a Web browser on your computer and connect to the Verizon website. Click the "My Verizon" link near the top of the Verizon homepage. Type your Verizon username and password for your current phone and click the "Sign In" button.

3. Click "Activate a new device" under the "I Want To…" area on the Web page. Click the "Select a Line" drop-down box and find the current phone number that you wish to deactivate from the list displayed. Click on the phone number and then click the "Next" button.

4. Remove the battery cover and battery from the new phone that you wish to activate. Locate the "MEID," "ESN" or "IMEI" number in the battery compartment. Type the number into the "New Device ID" field.

5. Click the "Submit" button and wait 10 minutes. Insert the battery back into the new phone you are activating and power up the phone.

6. Dial "*228" on the phone you wish to activate. Press "1" when prompted and wait one minute for programming to complete the activation process.
