Minnesota Home Improvement Grants

Minnesota homeowners can apply for grants to remodel their homes.

Residents of Minnesota who want to perform home improvement projects or energy efficiency upgrades can do so at no cost using currently available government programs. Interested homeowners must apply for these grants and must meet the program's guidelines.

Rural Housing Home Improvement Loan and Grant Program

This is a grant program for low-income residents making 50 percent or less than the average household for that particular county. Grants are offered to those age 62 or older, and loans to those who are younger than 62. The current loan rate is 1 percent of the project cost over a 20-year period.

Weatherization Assistance Program

The WAP is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy to provide energy-saving home improvement measures free of charge. This, in turn, lowers utility bills and makes homes more energy-efficient. This program is available statewide for low-income residents who are natural gas customers.

Renewable Energy Equipment Grant

The Renewable Energy Equipment Grant program funds the installation of equipment using renewable energy sources in residential low-income families. The maximum grant is $4,700 and must be used for solar-air or bio-fuel heating systems. Recipients must meet Energy Assistance Program guidelines to qualify. This grant incorporates weatherization efforts as well to maximize energy savings. The systems must meet a payback standard of at most 15 years to qualify for this grant program.
