Install The Pane In An Aluminum Window Frame

Install the Pane in an Aluminum Window Frame

A broken or badly set pane of glass can be a danger both to heating efficiency of a home and to the well-being of its inhabitants. No matter the extent of the damage, change a bad pane as soon as possible. An aluminum window frame makes changing a single pane of glass simple compared to the process for an older wooden frame. You can quickly remove the old pane and place the new one with a few common tools, and little experience at home repair. When completed, your window will be as good as new, with no evidence of the replacement. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the window panel from the aluminum window frame. Lift a sliding panel upward in the window frame until the bottom of the panel rises above the top level of the tracks at the sides of the panel that hold the panel in place. Tilt the bottom of the panel toward you until it clears the tracks and slide the panel downward, out of the frame. Remove the screws at the top and bottom of fixed window panels with a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove them from the frame. Pull the panel directly from the frame.

2. Measure the opening in the aluminum window frame for the glass, as well as the depth of the frame for the glass. The manufacturer of the aluminum frame may have produced the frame in a standard size, so a pre-cut pane likely is available.

3. Remove the screws at the top right and lower left of the panel to disassemble the panel for window pane installation, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the two L-shaped panel halves apart. If the panel sticks, tap the panel pieces gently with a rubber mallet to loosen it and then pull the panel apart. Remove the rubber gasket located within the sides of the panel.

4. Place the rubber gasket around the pane of glass, and place the pane into one of the L-shaped panel halves. Place the second panel half against the edge of the pane and press the halves together. Replace the two screws to secure the glass pane in place.

5. Place the panel back into the window frame, sliding the sliding panel into the tracks, or replacing the fixed panel screws as necessary.
