There is grant money available to make changes to an older home or to return a historic dwelling to its original condition. These grants can be found through nonprofit organizations such as community action agencies, the National Preservation Trust and others that offer assistance. Very Low-Income Housing Repair Program
This program offers loans and grants for lower-income homeowners to make improvements. The focus is to reduce any problems that endanger the health and safe living of the family. The grants are offered only to people who are aged 62 or older who are unable to afford a "Section 504" loan. Grants are given up $7,500. Weatherization Assistance Program
Grants through this program are given to organizations that assist low-income individuals with renovating their home to improve energy efficiency. The dwelling is examined for energy use and identifies problem areas. Examples of renovation projects include putting in a new air conditioning system and installing insulation in the home. Cynthia Woods Mitchell Fund for Historic Interiors
The focus of this fund is to give a matching grant for the renovation of historical building interiors. The grants are available to a public agency or nonprofit organization. National Trust for Historic Preservation
This program gives out funding, including grants, to both organizations and individuals who are preserving and renovating historical homes. The program gives out over $4 million each year in a variety of grants, loans and other awards.
