Replace Old Mobile Home Windows

Save money by replacing your own mobile home windows.

Mobile home windows require replacement if their thin aluminum frames bend or break, leaving a gap between the wall and the window frame. When this happens drafts, insects and moisture can all come into the mobile home. Replacing these windows requires only a few basic tools and a few hours. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Climb to the top of a stepladder so you are even with the top edge of the window frame. Attach a screw head bit for the size of screws on the frame onto a power drill and push the "Back" or "Reverse Direction" button. Insert the drill head into the screws that hold on the aluminum window frame and remove.

2. Hold onto the window as you remove the last screw so the window will not fall out on its own--you may need a friend to help you with this step. Carefully remove the entire window and the aluminum frame from its slot.

3. Cut excess putty tape away from the window frame opening with a utility knife. Scrape away remaining putty tape adhesive with a putty knife.

4. Apply new putty tape to the window frame opening according to package directions. Place an extra layer of putty tape at the top of the window opening to guard against moisture.

5. Grab one side of the new replacement window and have a helper hold the other side. Insert the window into the frame. Place one screw into the middle of each side of the window frame. Use a power drill with the corresponding screw head to screw these into the window's aluminum frame. Do not screw the screws all the way into the window frame. Continue to screw half of the remaining screws into the aluminum frame with the power drill.

6. Test the window by opening it and closing it after half the screws are in the frame. Make sure the window glides up and down easily before screwing the remaining screws into the window frame.

7. Screw the remaining screws into the aluminum window frame, and tighten them with the power drill.

8. Place a line of clear silicone sealant along the top of the aluminum window frame, between the frame and siding.
