Power Door Lock Installation

Installing power door locks is not a simple endeavor. Following basic instructions and planning your moves ahead of time, ensuring stable and damage-free connections, can make the endeavor far from daunting.

Instructions

1. Perform initial planning. Installing power locks is not a simple task, so laying out matters ahead of time is critical. It is important to understand where your components will be laid out in the car. The mounting of the main power lock module will be made when the lower driver side panel is taken off, and a location within that area must be decided upon, dependent upon the structure of the individual car. Also, with the door panel removed, the mounting spot for the actuator must be located.

2. Mount the main module. Make sure the location you picked for the main module is in a safe area, as this runs the entire power lock unit and it cannot be damaged or be subjected to any water damage. The actual mounting of the unit can be achieved either by strapping it to a harness near the dash, or any other support in the vicinity that is deemed stable and solid, such as the firewall.

3. Wire the components and attach the wiring harness. While the wiring harness itself is prewired, the actuator must be run through it. There are two five wire groups to deal with, and the shorter of these sides should be looped through the driver's side door, while the longer set set pass through the dash and ultimately into the passenger door. If you own a sedan as opposed to a sports car, the other two sets of wires go back to the rear door boots. The wires will ultimately go to the area in which the actuator is located.

4. Connect the last four wires. These are the four wires that are left when the wiring harness wires are connected above. There are brown, red, white, red and black wires, with the red and black acting as power and ground leads, and the white and brown acting as keyless entry inputs. The brown and white wires clearly attach to the keyless entry inputs, per their designation. The black wire will go to the Chassis Ground, while the red goes to 12Volts Constant.

5. Mount the actuator. There are two primary ways to perform this operation-directly or indirectly. It is possible to directly attach the actuator to the door skin, or indirectly mount it to a door strap, which in turn is connected to the skin. After this is achieved, locate the metal rod apparatus that should be included with your generic power lock kit, and hook it up per the instructions for your individual power lock set, and also make sure it is aligned with the lock/unlock mechanism in your door. Then connect the actuator rod to the door rod, and when tightened, this should match the position of the door lock.

6. Attach the actuator wires to the harness colors exactly, matching each color to its corresponding color.
