Hiring a professional electrician to rewire your house is a wise decision. Not only is rewiring a home potentially dangerous, but it's also a somewhat complicated procedure, particularly if you're rewiring an old rather than a new home. Furthermore, a professional electrician will be familiar with national and local electrical codes, making sure your house is up to date. Because every house is different, there is no set figure for the cost of rewiring. Luckily, however, you can estimate the approximate cost yourself, if you take several issues into consideration. 1. Walk through your house and count the number of fixtures, outlets and switches that you have, plus any additional ones that you want your electrician to install. Write your total number down. Most electricians charge $70 to $120 per switch, fixture and outlet.
2. Multiply your total number of switches, outlets and fixtures by $70 to figure out the low-end estimate. Multiply your total number of switches, outlets and fixtures by $120 to figure out the high-end estimate.
3. Add in the cost of upgrading to a 100 to 200 amp electrical panel. It can range from $800 to $3,000 to do this. Add $800 to your low-end figure and $3,000 to your high-end estimate.
4. Examine the outside and inside of your house and determine if your house is small, medium or large. A small or medium sized house will typically range from $3,500 to $8,000. A large house can cost from $8,500 to $20,000. Add the appropriate figure to your high- and low-end estimates, depending on the size of the house.
5. Measure your crawlspace. If you have less than 18 inches, the electrician is going to have cut holes in the plaster or drywall for access. You'll need to factor in at least $1,000 for repair of these holes after the electrician is done rewiring. Add this figure to your high- and low-end estimates, if relevant.
6. Contact local electricians, and ask them how much a rewiring permit would cost in your local area. Add this figure to your final high- and low-end amounts. You now have two estimates which approximate the total costs of rewiring your home, estimating conservatively and dramatically.
