Cleaning CD scratches without buying cleaning products is possible using common items found around the house. The CD must first be cleaned thoroughly, and then the scratches can be buffed out as long as they aren't too deep. Instructions
1. Dampen a clean cotton ball, and gently rub it across the CD to help remove any dirt or grime that may mar the performance of the CD. Move the cotton ball carefully from the center of the CD to its rim. Pat dry with a clean cloth.
2. Spray the CD scratches with glass cleaner, and gently rub with a soft, clean cloth as an alternative method for cleaning. Dip a cloth in water, and wipe the surface to rinse. Pat dry with a dry cloth, and once the CD is clean, proceed to buffing out CD scratches.
3. Use toothpaste to gently buff out CD scratches. Apply a small amount of paste to the affected area, and use a clean, soft rag to buff. Move in a circular motion from the center outward, and continue for several minutes. Remove the toothpaste with a clean cloth. Test the CD, and if it still doesn't play, repeat.
4. Use baking soda to buff out CD scratches. Combine enough water with a tablespoon of baking soda to form a thick paste. Apply to the affected area, and buff using a clean, soft cloth, moving in a circular motion from the center outward. Wipe the baking soda mixture from the CD using a clean cloth, and test the CD. Repeat this procedure if necessary.
5. Use Brasso to clean CD scratches or gently buff them away. Apply a small amount to the CD, and rub from the center of the CD to its rim on the scratch only. Avoid rubbing over any unnecessary areas. Wipe off the Brasso, and test the CD. Repeat if necessary.
