Mobile Home Repair Tips

Mobile homes require special repair procedures.

Mobile homes can be tricky to repair because they are similar enough to other homes that there are few people who specialize in repairing mobile homes and different enough that they have different problems and repair procedures. There are a few tips and tricks that can help save you time and money during mobile home repairs and help you avoid some of the common mobile home maintenance issues. Does this Spark an idea?

Fix Rather than Buy

One of the difficulties with replacing broken items in your mobile home is finding the right size. Because mobile homes tend to be smaller than other homes, it is often difficult to find replacement doors, screens, locks, counters, or curtains that are the correct size. Because of this, repair items whenever possible rather than replacing them. The time spent fixing a broken item might be less than the cost and hassle of finding the right size item.

Keep Records

Keep all of your records and manuals for your mobile home in one place. This is especially important for mobile homes repair, since not all handymen are familiar with mobile home plumbing and construction and may need to consult the manual or have the manufacturer's phone number. Keep a record of your conversations with your mobile home and appliance manufacturers to reference when fixing an item.

Repairing a Water Heater

Water heaters are generally accessible from the outside of the mobile home. This makes it difficult to insulate a water heater to ensure that the home has plenty of hot water. Put putty tape around the water heater door to insulate it. Replace the insulation when it becomes damaged or dirty. Secure the door with screws to add insulation. Always check to ensure that your water heater is level and that the board underneath it is level and in good condition. Mobile home water heaters are often placed on the sub floor, which is generally made of particleboard. If this particleboard gets wet, it can rot easily and will not be able to support the water heater.
