Federal funds offer assistance to homeowners.
Federal and state funds provide financial aid to homeowners who wish to carry out renovations or modifications. Funds are designed to support the disabled, the elderly and families living on low incomes. VLIHR Grants
Elderly homeowners can receive financial assistance for home repairs from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Very Low Income Housing Repair, or VLIHR, Grants are intended for senior citizens who reside in a rural location, receive low incomes and are above the age of sixty-two. Residents can use the funds for a range of home modifications including general maintenance work and improving accessibility for those suffering from disabilities. Grants can also help eliminate any safety hazards. As of July 2010, candidates who qualify for assistance under the VLHIR program can receive a total of $20,000 in financial aid, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture website.
RHPG Grants
Rural Housing Preservation Grants, or RHPG, offer financial assistant to homeowners in rural areas who receive low incomes. The Department of Agriculture administers the grants and issues them to homeowners who use the funds to restore and repair rundown rural residences. Candidates who apply for assistance under the RHPG program are required to show evidence that they have the legal and practical means to restore their homes before being accepted for funding. Candidates are required to use funds acquired under the RHPG program within two years of the issuing date.
IHB Grants
The Department of Housing of Urban Development issues Indian Housing Block Grants, or IHBG, to federally recognized tribes living on territories across the United States. Candidate families who apply for assistance under the IHBG program should have low-income levels and live in a tribal housing area. Candidates are also required to submit a detailed housing plan that does not adversely affect the natural environment.
SAH Funds
The Specially Adapted Housing for Veterans program provides financial aid to veteran homeowners who suffer from disabilities. The U.S. Veteran Affairs Department administers the program and provides funds to individuals who wish to make modifications to their homes to make daily living more comfortable. Those receiving funds through the SAH aid program typically use the money to build houses, affix wheelchair ramps and install other assisted living equipment.
Funds are also available under the Special Home Adaptation Program. Recipients can use SHA funds to improve mobility and living standards of veterans. Applicants are only eligible for assistance under one of these programs.
