Grants For Disabled Homeowners

Disabled homeowners often struggle to complete household tasks.

Maintaining and performing upkeep on a home can be challenging in the best of situations. Disabled homeowners, however, face additional challenges performing tasks that many homeowners take for granted. The federal government, along with a number of public and private agencies, has established grant programs that are designed to help disabled homeowners afford maintenance of their homes and make them more accessible. Does this Spark an idea?

Handi Ramp Foundation

Handi Ramp is an organization that provides wheelchair ramps and lifts to people with physical disabilities. Handi Ramp established and operates a foundation that provides grants to disabled homeowners who can't afford to purchase the lifts and ramps. These grants are distributed directly through the company and are offered to individuals regardless of their handicap. The only qualifications to obtain grant funding through Handi Ramp are that the applicant must have a disability that requires the use of a wheelchair and he must meet certain income standards in order to demonstrate need. Those interested in receiving grant funds may apply directly through Handi Ramp to see if they qualify.

HUD Home Grants

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is a federal agency that works to provide safe and affordable housing to U.S. residents. HUD offers a number of grants that are designed to assist low-income homeowners with making necessary repairs to their homes. Disabled homeowners may use these grants to add wheelchair ramps, lifts or other improvements that improve mobility. Grant funds awarded are based on several factors, including the types of improvements required and the income of the applicant. Interested parties can contact their local HUD office to see if they qualify.

Specially Adapted Housing

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a myriad of programs to assist military veterans with their housing needs. The VA also offers several grants for disabled veterans that are designed to help make improvements to their homes in order to improve mobility. These grants are issued through the VA's Specially Adapted Housing Program and can be used for the installation of wheelchair ramps and lifts, as well as the redesign of bathrooms and kitchens in order to make the home more wheelchair-friendly. Veterans who wish to apply for grants may apply directly through the VA to see if they meet program qualifications.
