Pop A Window Screen Back In Place

A window screen is easier to replace if you can do it from the outside.

Replacing an aluminum window screen is trickier than replacing a vintage wooden-framed one. You can fit a wooden screen snugly in place and secure it simply by turning two brackets, but you'll struggle with an aluminum one, and it isn't rare for it to bend in the process. An aluminum screen is designed to snap into position, and it will do so if you align it correctly and apply pressure in the right places. The operation is easier to accomplish from outside the house. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Replacing the Screen from Outside the House

1. Whether you're standing outside the window or working from a ladder, hold the screen upright and align it with the window frame. There should be a pull tab located on the side of the bottom of the frame. Hold the screen so that the tab faces the inside of the house.

2. Fit the top of the screen frame into the metal track on the top of the window frame and push the screen as far as it will go to the right or left.

3. Push the screen upward when the top edge is fully inserted in the track to depress the springs in the top of the screen frame.

4. Angle the bottom toward the window frame and push it into the lower track. If the bottom doesn't clear the edge of the bottom track, push the screen upward until it does.

Replacing the Screen from Inside the House

5. Use the pull tab to install the screen if you are doing it from inside the house. Open the window as far as it will go and pass the screen through the window.

6. Hold the screen upright with the tab on the side facing you and insert the top edge into the track on the top of the window frame. Push the screen over to one side.

7. Pull the bottom toward you using the pull tab. Fit one side of the screen into the side track as the bottom approaches the bottom track. When the bottom of the screen makes contact with the window frame, pull upward on the tab to depress the springs and clear the screen over the frame.

8. Center the screen in the frame once the bottom is securely in place.
