Minority Home Grants

Minorities have access to grants to help buy or renovate a home.

Finding a home that is affordable in America can be a very difficult process. If you are a low-income individual or in a minority, the task of purchasing a home can be made even more difficult. Finding the money for a down payment and getting a loan are major hurdles for minorities looking to purchase a house. There are many sources of funds from the federal government aimed to make it easier for members of minorities to secure the money necessary for a loan or overcome housing discrimination. Fair-housing and community development are top priorities of these organizations.

Fair Housing Initiatives Program

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is providing grants to local nonprofit groups that strive to improve housing opportunities for minorities. These funds go to groups that work with housing programs to provide affordable housing to minorities and that crack down on companies that discriminate against minorities who apply for home loans and apartments. The Fair Housing Initiatives Program also works with local and state governments to end housing discrimination and help minorities find an affordable place to live.

Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program

The Department of Housing and Urban Development works to provide home ownership opportunities to low-income families and minorities that would normally not have the chance. HUD provides grants to qualifying nonprofits and government groups that make available housing to low-income families. According to HUD's website, these funds can be used to purchase land and homes, renovate or rebuild existing property or pay administrative costs associated with purchasing and maintaining a home.
