Many New York charities will come pick up your used furniture for free.
If you have recently redecorated your home or have run out of space, you may be looking to get rid of used furniture. If your furniture is in good condition, you don't have to put it out on the street for garbage collection. Contact your child's school, local library, community center, church, synagogue or mosque to see if they would like your gently used recliner, table or desk. New York City also has numerous organizations that want your furniture and will come and pick it up for free. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Clean all furniture items that you would like to donate. Dust or scrub wooden and plastic surfaces. Wash and remove stains from upholstered pieces and pillows. Check to make sure all furniture is safe to use and not in need of any repairs.
2. Contact the City Opera Thrift Shop at 212-684-5344 if you are interested in supporting the arts. Along with furniture, the shop sells clothing, art and collectibles to raise money for the New York City Opera's costume department. Call from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday to arrange for a time for them to pick up your furniture.
3. Call the Development Office of the Catholic Charities of New York at 646-794-2051 to help those who need housing assistance, low-income families, victims of domestic violence or persons with physical or mental disabilities. The organization will pick up furniture if you live in Manhattan (above 14th Street) or in the Bronx. Your furniture may be sold in a thrift shop to support one of the charities or directly donated to an individual or family in need.
4. Call Yeshiva Kol Yaakov at 800-507-4483 or 718-551-2200 if you would like to support Jewish educational programs for youth, adults and families. They offer a free pick-up service in all five of New York City boroughs and will sell your used furniture to raise money for their organization. Call seven days a week.
5. Phone Heritage for the Blind at 800-236-8283 if you would like the proceeds from the sale of your used furniture to support people with visual impairments. Heritage for the Blind is a national organization that offers a free pick-up service across the country. Funds raised go toward Braille publications, educational resources and benefits search and medical alert services for those with complete or partial blindness.
6. Contact The Partnership for the Homeless at 718-875-5353 to help recently homeless individuals and families get back on their feet. If you live in Brooklyn they may be able to pick-up furniture from your home. Those who are transitioning from the streets to a new apartment can visit the Furnish-A-Future Warehouse and take home free furniture--possibly one of your donations.
