TransUnion is a major credit reporting agency that provides credit reports on debtors to lenders and creditors. Your individual TransUnion credit report and the information it contains is a critical part of maintaining your financial integrity. If you find errors on your credit report from TransUnion, you can dispute it either online or through the mail. The process for disputing TransUnion credit report information is simple and straightforward and can be done in just a few minutes in most cases.
Instructions
1. Locate the items you wish to contest on your TransUnion credit report. Notate the creditor's names, applicable account numbers, and the balance that is reflected on the items.
2. Compose a dispute letter to TransUnion if you wish to file your dispute via mail, which is recommended by the Federal Trade Commission. In your letter, include your full name, mailing address, and phone number as well as information on all accounts that you wish to dispute. Include with the account information the reasons that you believe the accounts are incorrect. Also include the information that would make each account correct (e.g., "Wells Fargo Visa Account # 1234567890011234 displays balance of $4,566.95, but I paid off this account three months ago. It should have a zero balance").
3. Include with the letter any documentation that you might have that will support the dispute. Items like credit card statements, canceled checks, letters from the creditor, or payment receipts can be copied and sent along with the dispute letter. At the bottom of the letter, include a list of all enclosures in which you've sent along with the letter.

4. File your dispute online, if you wish, instead of mailing it in. You may file online disputes with TransUnion by visiting http://www.transunion.com and clicking on the blue "dispute an item" link on the bottom of the page under the Consumer Assistance menu.
Follow all prompts and indicate the incorrect items using the same information as you would if you were mailing in a dispute letter. Submit your dispute online and take note of the confirmation number your dispute is assigned.
TransUnion will email you updates regarding the status of your dispute, or you can check online by using your confirmation number.
5. Wait 30 to 45 days for your dispute to be investigated and for a response on your case. You will be notified via U.S. Mail or email, and sometimes both. If changes were made to your TransUnion credit report as you requested, you will receive an updated credit report along with the decision letter.
