The torque settings are important to the operation of your Craftsman garage opener.
The torque settings of your Craftsman garage opener dictate how much force the motor applies when raising and lowering the door. You might find the motor reverses or stalls while moving in a particular direction if the torque or force settings are set too low. The weather sometimes affects the opener, as well. For these reasons, you might need to make seasonal adjustments to the controls to keep your garage door opening and closing correctly. Access the torque controls via the motor head hanging from the ceiling of your garage. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Open or close the door to see how your garage door opener behaves. Make a note of whether the door reverses while opening, closing or both.
2. Place a shoe box away from the safety sensors while the door is closing if the opener appears to be working normally. The door should reverse after putting a small amount of force on the box. The downward force needs to be reduced if the door crushes the box.
3. Repeat the same test, this time watching the door as it opens; the door should continue opening without reversing under its own weight. Decrease the upward force if the door moves upward with too much force and bangs open.
4. Stand on a stepladder beneath the motor head and locate the force setting dials. The pair of dials are marked with an up and down arrow icon containing the letters "KG" and are usually located on the side of the motor head.
5. Turn the downward force dial one number higher using a screwdriver if the door reversed on the way down without an obstruction; decrease the force by one if the door failed to reverse when it touched the box. Turn the upward force dial higher one number if the door fails to raise; lower it if door banged when it stopped opening.
6. Test your new settings by opening and closing the garage. Make any necessary adjustments - raising or lowering the force by increments of one based on the information in step five and the results of the test until the door opens and closes as its should. See Tips if the door continues to reverse without your touch.
