Automotive Muffler Repair

Repairing a muffler yourself can save money on a mechanic.

A muffler is a metallic device that is a part of a car or motorcycle's exhaust system that reduces noise. Mufflers are required by law in most states, and they can be expensive to replace when they fail. Mufflers are metallic so they can rust or develop holes as the metal corrodes. Repairing a muffler can take time and be difficult for those without automotive experience, but doing it correctly can save money on mechanics.

Instructions

1. Elevate the car using a jack or car supports. Make sure the car is secure and is in no danger of falling.

2. Turn the car on and hold the tip of a long screwdriver up to the muffler under the car. Hold the screwdriver head to your ear. By moving the screwdriver around the muffler, you should be able to hear if there are any rattles and determine where they are coming from.

3. Drill a small hole into the muffler where you hear the rattling noise.

4. Insert a large drywall screw into the hole. This helps eliminate rattling noises and is a good temporary repair for muffler problems until you can get it replaced.

5. Weld a small metal plate over any larger holes or rusted areas in the muffler. You could also use clamps to hold the metal in place over the hole.

6. Apply sealer to any small holes or dents. There are exhaust repair kits available that have sealers designed for muffler use.
