Repair A Sears Mower

Avoid hitting rocks that will break the blade.

A Sears Craftsman lawn mower will mow down tough grass for years without many problems. Eventually, they will break down, especially after five years. Parts are easily replaceable, however. They can be obtained at a Sears store and online through Sears Parts Direct. After the proper parts are obtained, they can be easily put on at home. This will save you hundreds of dollars in repairs. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Replace the spark plug if the mower will not turn on. Locate the black spark plug hose running along the front of the motor. Pull the hose off to expose the plug. Replace the plug with a new one and slide the hose into place.

2. Empty the gas tank if the gas has been sitting in the tank for longer than a few months. Old gas can corrode and cause the motor to sound like it is backfiring. Loosen the drain screw on the carburetor a few turns and turn the mower on its side. Drain the gas into a gas canister only. Do not use a canister that is not approved for gasoline as this can cause a fire hazard. Replace the old gas with new gas by pouring it into the gas tank. Screw the cap back on.

3. Remove the air filter. It is located on the motor's left side under a plastic rectangle plate. Unscrew the plate and pop the filter out. Clean the dirty filter with water and detergent. Allow it to dry and place it back into the motor and screw the plate back on.

4. Change the blade. Turn the mower on its side. Unscrew the bolt in the center of the blade with a wrench. Remove the bolt and slide the blade off. Slide a new blade on and screw the bolt back into place.
