There are basically two types of windows. Single-pane windows have one single piece of glass; double-pane windows, sometimes called insulated glass, have two pieces of glass that are separated by a rubber gasket and strip of aluminum. When the glass in these windows breaks, you will have to replace the glass in order to prevent heat and cooling loss. It is a moderately easy task, and depending on the amount of windows, it can be done in less than a day. Does this Spark an idea?
Tools and Material
There are several tools used to replace glass in windows. Use a glass cutter to cut smaller pieces of glass from a larger one, a putty knife for removing the broken glass and trim, screwdrivers, and a small hammer. You'll also need window glazing for single-pane windows, a tape measure for measuring the glass, a piece of glass; it can be a larger piece. You will seal the window with a tube of clear exterior caulk.
Single-Pane Windows
To replace the glass in a single-pane window, first remove any trim that holds the window in place. Slide the putty knife behind the trim and gently pry the window loose. Remove nails with a pair pliers. If the glass is glazed in place, use a heat gun and putty knife to remove the glaze. Be careful with the broken glass; use gloves to remove the glass. Scrape the window slot with the putty knife and remove any stuck-on glass or caulking. Measure the opening and cut the glass 1/8 smaller that the measured opening. Lie the glass on a flat table, use a square and a Sharpie to make your marks, and cut to the outside of the mark with a glass cutter. You won't need to cut completely through the glass on the first try. The glass cutter has a carbon wheel that will score the glass and allow you to break the glass on the mask. Lay a small bead of caulk in the wood opening and replace the glass. Use a putty knife to apply the trim or glaze.
Double-Pane Windows
Double-pane windows are held in place by either wood or plastic trim that are nailed or screwed into place. Remove them by prying or unscrewing the hardware. Remove the glass from the opening If the second piece of glass is broken, remove the rubber gasket and aluminum strip, which are about 1/4 inch wide, and remove the second piece of glass. Replace the second piece of glass by laying a small bead of caulk, then the glass, then the aluminum strip and gasket. Finish by applying the window trim.
