Use Dry Ice For Dent Removal On Aluminum

Aluminum is a soft, lightweight metal, making is susceptible to dents and dings. The bright side to this soft nature of aluminum also makes it easier to repair dents. One creative way to repair aluminum dents is with dry ice. A rapid temperature drop in aluminum causes it to temporarily shrink, thus causing a dent to automatically pull out. While this technique may not work in all situations, it can be quite effective at times. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Tear a sheet of aluminum foil to a size at least twice as large as the dent. Place the foil next to the dented aluminum. Gather a hair dryer and the dry ice and set it next to the aluminum.

2. Put on a pair of thick leather gloves to protect your hands from the dry ice. Alternatively, thick, well-insulated rubber gloves can also work.

3. Turn on the hair dryer and set it to medium heat. Hold it 6 inches away from the dent and move it back and forth. Continue this for one or two minutes, until the metal feels warm to the touch. Be cautious if the aluminum is painted, as too much heat can cause paint damage.

4. Hold the sheet of aluminum foil over the dent. Place the dry ice against the dent and move it around in a circular motion until you hear the dent pop out.
