Pennsylvania Home Restoration Grants

Grants are available to restore rural homes in Pennsylvania.

A number of grants are available for Pennsylvania residents who want to restore or rehabilitate homes that are considered to have historic value. Grants are also available for low-income or otherwise disadvantaged individuals who need to make home improvements in order to make it safe. Does this Spark an idea?

Historic Properties Repair Program

The Historic Properties Repair Program is a program created by the Preservation Alliance of Philadelphia to help low to moderate income homeowners maintain and repair their older, historical homes. The purpose of these grants is to pay for quality restorations on historic homes in order to maintain historic integrity.

According to the Preservation Alliance, the city of Philadelphia has allotted more than a million dollars to fund these grants. In order to qualify, owners must live in the building for which they are applying for the grant, meet a certain income level and have the repair project approved by the Philadelphia Historical Commission.

The Preservation Alliance website also offers a number of links to tax discounts and loans for home restoration.

Rural Development Housing Repair Grants

The United States Department of Agriculture offers a $7,500 repair grant for low-income homeowners to use to make necessary repairs and restorations to their homes. In order to qualify for the grants, which do not have to be repaid, homeowners must be over 62 years old, live in a rural area and have a very low income.

Loans are also available through this program for homeowners who do not meet the grant qualifications.

Core Communities Housing Program

The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development is in charge of awarding money in the form of grants and other funding for the Core Community Housing Program. The grant money available through this program can be used to improve housing situations, repair historic buildings, improve potentially hazardous conditions and remodel a home to improve access for those suffering from disabilities.

Recipients must meet certain criteria, including income and matching funds.
