Repair A Stoppedup Air Conditioner Drain Pipe

You can unclog an air conditioner drain line with a wet-dry vacuum.

An important part of your air conditioning unit is the drain pipe, also known as a drain line, drip line or condensation line. The purpose of the drain pipe is to remove excess condensation that naturally occurs inside the air conditioning unit. When the drain pipe becomes clogged with mold, mildew or other debris, excess moisture will leak from the air conditioner and into your home, creating water damage and possibly an expensive repair bill. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the air conditioning power cord from the outlet. For units hard-wired into your home's electrical system, turn off the breaker switch.

2. Detach the air conditioner front panel. Depending on the make and model of your unit, you may need to remove several screws securing the panel in place.

3. Disconnect the drain pipe from the AC unit. Typically, the drain pipe is located near the bottom of the drain pan and below the condenser coil.

4. Attach a nozzle that fits snugly on a wet/dry vacuum. You can find the appropriate size attachment at home improvement stores. Attach the other end of the nozzle to the drain pipe.

5. Turn the wet/dry vacuum on suck and let the force of the vacuum suck out the clog. Remove the nozzle from the drain line.

6. Stick a funnel inside the drain line and pour equal parts of water and bleach down the line. This mixture will kill any mold or mildew growing in the line that can build up and cause clogs.

7. Let the mixture sit in the line for 30 minutes before pouring several cups of water down the funnel and through the drain pipe. The water will rinse the line clean.

8. Remove the funnel and reattach the drain pipe. Secure the front panel back on the air conditioning unit.
