Paintless Dent Repair Tips

Paintless dent removal can be completed at home.

There are many tools that can be used to remove dents from a car, including a grinder, a dent puller or a drill. If the dent has not damaged the paint, it can be repaired, using one of many paintless dent repair techniques. If the paint is damaged, the dent is repairable but will require a paint job after the dent is fixed.

Plunger

You can use a plunger to repair some dents, depending upon how bad the damage is. Wet the dent area to create suction between the dent and the plunger. Add a small amount of soap for additional suction. Place the plunger against the dent, and push inwards onto the dented area. Do not push with too much force; you could increase the size of the dent. Pull back quickly, using significant force. Repeat the process as many times as necessary, until the dent is completely removed.

Hammer and Dolly

If you can get to the dent from both sides, a hammer and dolly is another method of paintless dent removal. If you do not have a metal dolly, a block of wood can be used. Locate the back of the dent, and place the block of wood against it. Hammer it gently. Do not make direct contact with the hammer and the dent, as you could cause additional dents that will be visible on the other side. Continue to tap the block of wood, until the dent is removed.

Dry Ice

You can purchase dry ice from a grocery store or online (see Resources). It is not expensive, retailing at approximately $2 per pound. Wear a pair of gloves, and carefully push the dry ice onto the dent. Move the dry ice to all areas of the dent. The dent will eventually pop out due to the temperature difference of the ice and the dented surface.

Dent Puller

Plunger-type dent-removal tools are available that are designed to pull a dent out of a car. They work in a similar way to a plunger, but always follow the instructions from the manufacturer to avoid damaging your car.
