Repair The Transmission For A Troybilt Selfpropelled Mower Model Series 860

The transmission on an 860 series Troy-Bilt self-propelled mower mounts on the front of the mower inside the mower deck. The transmission is belt driven from the flywheel pulley mounted under the mower on the mower shaft. If the mower fails to propel on its own; there are a few things you can do to repair the transmission to restore power to the front wheels. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Locate the screws that secure the plastic cover onto the top front corner of the mower deck on the Troy-Bilt mower and undo the screws.

2. Lift the cover off the mower deck by pressing in on the sides of the cover and then by lifting up. With the cover removed, you can see the mower's transmission inside the mower deck.

3. Locate the tension screw between the pulley on the transmission and transmission housing. Turn the screw clockwise with a screwdriver to add additional tension to the drive belt. As the belt ages, it starts to stretch. When it stretches, the belt slips on the pulley and the propelling system stops working. Adding tension helps to eliminate slippage.

4. Snap the cover back onto the deck and secure it with both screws. Start the mower and test the propelling system. If it does not work, move to the next step.

5. Remove the cover again and place it off to the side. Loosen the tensioning screw by turning it counterclockwise with a screwdriver. This will loosen tension on the belt.

6. Remove the belt from the transmission housing and then place the mower on its side so the air cleaner faces upward.

7. Pull the belt through the access hole on the mower deck and then remove the belt from the flywheel pulley.

8. Place the belt onto the flywheel pulley, stretch it through the access hole and then place the belt onto the transmission pulley.

9. Tighten the tensioner screw with the screwdriver, reinstall the cover and test the propelling system. If the transmission fails to work, move to the next step.

10. Locate the clutch cable adjustor. The clutch cable connects to the metal bar that you compress against the mower's handle to engage the transmission. Follow the cable until you locate the screw adjustor.

11. Loosen the jam nut on the adjustor and then turn the adjustor clockwise two turns. After adjusting, tighten the jam nut with the wrench. Test the propelling system. If you feel the mower lurch forward but it still does not run, adjust the cable again.
