Repair & Replace Grout Between Glass Blocks

Glass block is a beautiful addition to any home. It is a way to invite light in and keep peering eyes out. It serves as a window without requiring curtains or shades. Glass block can also be a wonderful conversation piece. As with any construction, however, the grout in it may fall victim to weather, becoming loose and crumbly. The handy homeowner shouldn't have any trouble repairing and replacing the damaged grout. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove all loose grout with a nail, screwdriver or grout saw. Ensure the completed project's uniformity by removing a thin layer of grout from the entire panel.

2. Hose down the panel with water and scrub with a stiff brush. Do not power wash or use a wire brush.

3. Allow the entire area to dry thoroughly. The drying time will vary depending on temperature and weather conditions.

4. Mix enough glass block mortar to complete the project. Place a small amount in a grout bag and fold the bag as you would a pastry bag. Squeeze grout into all the joints on the panel.

5. Work mortar in with a joint tool. This is called "striking the joints." Allow to set for 10 to 15 minutes or until you can brush away the excess without affecting the joints. Use a soft brush for this step.

6. Dampen a tile sponge and wipe the panel in circular motions. If the grout wipes out of the joints when sponged, give it additional time to dry. Rinse the sponge and repeat this process as many times as is necessary to remove all excess and leave the glass block clean. You may need to change the water a few times during this step.
