Repair A Sears Kenmore Washing Machine Belt

Use a socket wrench to access the belt on the motor pulleys.

Kenmore washing machines vary in features and design for each particular model. Some models are high capacity, and some have more cleaning cycle choices than others. Each Sears Kenmore washing machine uses a similar mechanism to control the basin inside the machine. The motor connects to pulleys with a drive belt. The belt and pulley system causes the basin to spin, rotate and agitate. A broken belt will render the washing machine unusable. Replace the belt to restore the Kenmore washer to its full functionality. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.

2. Push in on the plastic end caps on the right and left ends of the control console. Pull them back to remove them. Remove the screws that are now visible on the ends of the console.

3. Flip the control console back until it comes to a stop on its hinges.

4. Unplug the electrical connector under the control console area by hand.

5. Insert the tip of the flat-blade screwdriver into the metal clips on the back of the top panel of the washer. Twist the screwdriver to pry the clips open.

6. Lift the top panel up and toward you to remove it. Set the top panel aside.

7. Remove the bolts on the base of the motor assembly with the socket wrench. Push the motor assembly toward the back of the washer cabinet to loosen belt tension.

8. Slide the old belt off the two pulleys. Position the new belt around the smaller pulley. Loop the other end around the larger pulley.

9. Move the motor assembly back to its previous position. Replace and tighten the bolts on the motor assembly.

10. Replace the top panel onto the Sears Kenmore washer cabinet. Fasten the metal clips at the back of the panel.

11. Plug the electrical connector back into the control console. Move the control console to its original position. Replace the screws on the ends of the console. Cover the screws with the plastic end caps.
