Repair Wood Rot On The Bottom Of A Casement Window

Use epoxy filler to repair wood rot on a casement window.

Wood rot forms from mold, fungus or termites attacking the wood. The wood becomes soft, disintegrating from its structure with the brush of a hand. Before repairing wood rot, find the reason for the disintegration. After correcting the source of the wood rot, the repair work can begin. Not repairing the wood rot may result in the rot spreading around the entire window casement resulting in an entire window replacement. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove wood rot from the bottom of the casement window. Dig at the rotten wood with a screwdriver or hard stick, loosening it from the window casing. Brush the loosened wood from the window casement with your hand. Remove all soft wood from the window casement.

2. Place plastic loosely over the affected area of the window casement. Tape the plastic securely to the window casement with masking tape. Allow the plastic to remain on the area for a week to allow it to dry completely before repairing.

3. Mix 2 tbsp. of the epoxy resin and epoxy hardener on a scrap piece of wood using a putty knife. Mix the components for two to three minutes. Use additional resin and hardener for larger jobs.

4. Scoop up a small segment of the epoxy, and roll it with your hands. Apply it to the affected area of the window casement. Press the wood filler into the casement, shaping it with your fingers or with the flat edge of the putty knife. Continue filling & shaping the area with the wood filler. Smooth the edges with the putty knife to achieve flat surfaces.

5. Sand the area with a 120-grit sandpaper after the epoxy has completely dried. Wipe residue from the area with a clean rag. Stain or paint the window casement.
