Woodworking Crafts

For Boy Scout projects, shop class or home improvements, working in wood can provide a sense of accomplishment. A woodworking project can save money in repairs, be an alternative to replacing furniture, or provide thoughtful handmade gifts. The best place to get started in working with wood is with simple projects that require little technical knowledge. If you are looking to learn work with wood, here are some simple projects that can get you started.

Scroll Saw Patterns

A scroll saw pattern allows you to easily cut a project out of wood following a pr-set design. Scroll saw patterns allow you to make puzzles or cut-outs, or layer and laminate pieces together for a more 3-dimensional look. These pieces can then be sanded and painted or varnished to finish them. Some examples of scroll saw projects include shaped cutting boards, block puzzles, flat ornaments for Christmas decoration and names or other decorative letters that can be painted and hung on the wall.

Spice Rack

A spice rack is a great way to learn about joining wooden parts together. This is frequently a project that is turned into a Mother's Day gift. A well made spice rack can free up shelf space in a kitchen and at the same time become a showcase for the kitchen itself. Most spice racks consist of an open-faced cabinet with multiple shelves and dividers inside. Complex spice racks can contain adjustable shelves, while simple ones have one or two fixed shelves onto which spice canisters can be set.

Toys

These days, it's very easy to rush out to the local big-box discount store and buy cheap plastic toys. However, homemade wooden blocks, boats, letters and rocking horses often create a nostalgic feel in adults while being sturdier than their plastic counterparts. Often, wooden toys can be used for several generations and may become family heirlooms.

Carving

Like scroll saw work, carving involves removing bits of wood to create intricate patterns. Carving can be as simple as whittling with a knife, or as complex as using several chisels and a block of balsa wood. A carving may be fully three-dimensional, or a relief carved into a larger piece. Care should always be taken when handling carving knives, as many are very sharp. Like many hobbies, woodcarving takes time and practice to master. Advanced woodcarvers can create realistic human faces, birds and other wildlife.
