Volunteer To Help Senior Citizens Repair Homes

Many volunteers have skills honed over a lifetime.

It is a laudable aim to help senior citizens repair their homes. You may have time on your hands, expertise or experience in home repair or maintenance and a desire to help. Many senior citizens would welcome a hand with the house or garden as they may no longer be able to climb ladders or wield a paintbrush. This is a very practical type of help and for some older people it makes a significant difference, not only helping them to feel happier, but also enabling them to maintain their independence.

Instructions

1. Inquire among your senior relatives and neighbors about maintenance or repair jobs you could do. Check out community organizations in your neighborhood. Many have projects and programs designed to help seniors with home repair or other tasks. Some are sponsored by local businesses that pay for paint and materials.

2. Ask at your local church or senior citizens organizations if they run any home repair volunteer programs. They may even ask you to start one yourself. If a program already exists you will probably have to apply officially and attend a short training course. Explain any particular areas of expertise you have, for instance you may have worked as a plumber or electrician.

3. Visit the National Council on Aging website to explore any additional local programs. You may also find alternative sources of available funding. Offer your services and recognize that you may be involved in seasonal tasks, such as preparing senior citizens' houses for winter or shoveling snow.
