Waterproof A Basement Floor

Waterproofing your basement is important to the longevity of your home. Water damage is a real threat to any home, and taking the necessary steps to protect your investment is a must. Contrary to popular belief, waterproofing is not a time-consuming or lengthy procedure that requires a professional. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean the area to prepare for application. Sweep thoroughly, then follow up with a vacuum. Once you have finished vacuuming, mop the floor using any household cleaner mixed with water. The surface must be free of particulates to ensure proper adhesion of the primer and waterproofing product. Let the floor dry and block from traffic.

2. Prime the surface with the primer that came with the waterproofing. Use the brush for edges and corners, and the roller for wide-open spaces. Read the instructions on primer container; some primers need to be diluted with water, while others can be used straight. Drying time varies by product, so be sure to check the container for specifics.

3. Rinse the paint brush and roller in water and set aside to dry while you are waiting on the primer. Be sure to clean thoroughly, as all primer must be rinsed before you can begin waterproofing.

4. Once the primer is dry, apply the waterproofing agent. As in the priming stage, use the roller for the wide-open areas and the brush for corners and edges. Read the instructions on the waterproofing container; some products require you to apply additional coats. Let the product dry.

5. Once the waterproofing has dried, check the surface to ensure complete coverage. Apply another coat if you are unsure. Pay careful attention to corners and areas around exterior windows and doors; the potential for moisture accumulation are greatest at these points.
