Fix Water Damage In Books

You can repair your water-damaged books in a timely and stress-free manner.

Water-damaged books are the bane of any avid reader's or library administrator's existence. Many water-damaged books are perfectly salvageable if you utilize the proper methods of repair. So, the next time an area of your home is flooded or you accidentally drop a book in the bathtub, don't throw away that dampened literature. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Blot up excess water from the book's cover with an absorbent sponge or washcloth. Once you have blotted up all the moisture from the front cover, repeat the process on the book's back cover.

2. Remove moisture from any pages that have fallen victim to water damage. Place a paper towel or sheet of wax paper on top of any wet pages. Once you've properly positioned the sheets, close the book. This will soak up the pages' moisture. If you're working with a book that features a high page count, this process can be time-consuming.

3. Dry your book. In a dry, cool area, position the book so that it is standing on its top or bottom edge -- whichever is drier. Continuously switch the edge on which the book is standing throughout the drying process.

4. Place the book atop a solid surface once it is dry but still slightly dampened. To prevent page distortion, place a small weight on top of the book. Once the book is completely dry, you may resume reading it or return it to your bookshelf.
