About Oris Watches

About Oris Watches

The Oris watch is a Swiss-made, formal dress watch brand that has been around for more than 100 years. The watches are built to display the time while also displaying an elegant, stylish appearance to complement your outfit. Does this Spark an idea?

History

Oris is based in Holstein, Switzerland and was founded in 1904 by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian, who mixed technology, Swiss horology traditions and a watchmaker's touch, into one, making the precision time piece. Oris is the name of a stream and a valley close to Holstein, in the northwestern part of Switzerland, which inspired the name. In 1968, the company was awarded by the Observatoire Astronomique et Chronometrique, giving the company full chronometer certification, which is the highest distinction in watch accuracy.

The Watch

The signature mark of the Oris watch, other than the trademarked flash of red that represents the heartbeat of every Oris watch, is that all of its watches are purely mechanical. The handmade watches all operate without batteries, and are equipped with high-quality automatic mechanical movements. The faces of the watches are distinctive, incorporating pioneering innovations.

Cost

These state-of-the-art watches are expensive---ranging from around $500 to more than $3,000. There are many different styles, such as watches made for aviation, diving and motor sports. There are also dress watches. Special edition watches come with additions such as boxes, albums or other add-ons.

Maintenance

The company has service centers all over the world. The mechanical watches suffer wear and tear over time, so Oris recommends routine maintenance every three to five years. When the company services a watch, the service center completely dismantles the watch, cleans, lubricates and reassembles the movement of the watch, so it works like new. Repairs come with a one-year warranty.

Who Wears Them

Oris has made many custom watches made for celebrities, from Keanu Reeves to Mathew McConaughey. Oris also have a long relationship of sponsoring Formula One racing, divers and aviation professionals. The watches can withstand many different conditions, while remaining classically stylish at the same time.
