Updating the firmware on an LCD TV improves its performance.
LG televisions come in a variety of models, but they share the need to use software to operate their increasingly complex and sophisticated displays. If your LG TV isn't operating as it normally does, updating the firmware is one of the steps in resolving the problem. Firmware is the software that resides on the memory chip inside your hardware. Updating the firmware involves downloading the update and getting the update onto your TV.
Instructions
1. Plug your USB flash drive into the computer and wait for it to be recognized. Open the flash drive by double-clicking it. Remove any data files or old programs -- firmware updates require a clean flash drive to execute properly.
2. Open your web browser and navigate to LG's service page (full link in Resources). Review the list of downloadable firmwares for LG televisions. Click on the download that corresponds to your TV's model number and select "Save Link As." Save the file to your desktop.
3. Create a folder inside of the flash drive entitled "LG_DTV." Copy the downloaded firmware file from your desktop to the new folder on your USB drive. When the file copy is complete, eject the flash drive from your computer.
4. Power off your LG television and plug the flash drive into the USB port on your television. Power your TV back on and allow the setup process to begin. After approximately 30 seconds an update menu appears. This menu informs you of your TV's model number, current firmware version and the version of the updated firmware.
5. Use your remote control buttons to select the "Start" button on the screen to begin the firmware upgrade process, which takes five to 10 minutes. During this period of time, do not to power off your TV or it may be rendered inoperable. When the update is complete, your TV will restart. When the TV restarts, unplug the USB flash drive. Your TV is updated and ready for use.
