The fuel filter cleans contaminants from the fuel line as fuel makes its way to the combustion chamber of the Aerostar's engine. As the filter clogs with contaminants, the rate of fuel being pumped to the engine slows down, causing problems such as stalling and rough idling. To keep the fuel lines flowing, you should replace the fuel filter in your Ford Aerostar every 15,000 miles. The job is straightforward and requires only a few basic tools.
Instructions
1. Locate the fuel filter inside the frame rail on the driver's side of the Aerostar. The filter is located in the gap between the door and the rear quarter panel. Use the replacement filter as a visual aid.
2. Remove the bolt that secures the filter to the frame rail, using a socket.
3. Pry off the retaining clips that hold the fuel lines to both ends of the fuel filter, using a pair of pliers.
4. Pull the filter free of the fuel line on each end of it.
5. Align the new fuel filter with the fuel line. The arrow on the filter should be facing the front of the Aerostar.
6. Snap the retaining clips around the fuel filter, using your fingers.
7. Secure the filter to the frame rail using the original bolt, a socket and a ratchet.
