On the tail of the successful "cash for clunkers" program, Congress is now approving a $300 million stimulus aimed at getting energy efficient appliances into your home by offering you a rebate on your purchase. Unlike the clunkers program, however, you will not need to trade in or get rid of your old appliance. Here are the steps you will need to take in order to get your energy efficient appliance rebate. 1. Decide on which appliance to get. The US Department of Energy has indicated that the energy efficient appliance rebate will likely be made available on: Boilers, Central air conditioners, Clothes washers, Dishwashers, Freezers, Furnaces (oil and gas), Heat pumps (air source and geothermal), Refrigerators, Room air conditioners, and Water heaters.
2. Find and contact your state energy office by looking it up here: http://www.energy.gov/InYourState.htm Each state will be administering its own energy efficient appliance rebate and will determine how much the rebate will be depending on the appliance. Once you know how much your state is offering you can better decide on which appliance or appliances are most appealing. Keep in mind that these rebates will be made available in late 2009 to early 2010.
3. Compare models that have the necessary energy efficiency rating. Since the energy efficient appliance rebate will require a certain energy rating, keep this in mind while shopping. More than likely, retailers will highlight the energy efficient models, but if they don't, be sure to ask which ones will qualify for the rebate. Some states may even offer a point of purchase rebate, allowing you to get the rebate instantly.
4. Retain your receipt and obtain the application forms. The appliance retailers like bestbuy, sears, and Home Depot among others will have the actual forms you will need to submit to obtain your rebate. Be sure to fill out these forms, retain a copy, and submit them promptly. If the appliance retailer does not have the form, you will be able to download them from your state energy office.
5. Combine your energy efficient appliance rebate with other tax credits. Remember that federal tax credits and other financial incentives may be claimed for the same products.
