Repair Windows XP in Safe Mode
Your computer is not working correctly. It has an error, it is running slowly or it simply won't boot properly. Clearly, it has sustained some form of damage. Regardless of whether the damage has occurred due to a virus or a deleted system file, you can repair your Windows XP computer in Safe Mode. Safe Mode is a form of starting Windows XP while using only the basic files and drivers required to boot Windows XP. Normal Safe Mode is the basic startup but offers other options. Safe Mode with Networking allows only the basic drivers and files plus it boots your network connections allowing Internet access.

Starting Your Computer in Safe Mode
1. Turn on your computer.
2. Continuously press F8 until you see a black screen called "Windows Advanced Options Menu."
3. Select "Safe Mode" by using the arrow keys on your keyboard and press "Enter." Your computer will boot in Safe Mode. When your desktop loads, you will notice your video settings have also changed. This is due to your video card not being loaded. This is normal because Windows XP only loads requires files and drivers. Now you can safely perform any diagnostic task without the risk of loading programs or drivers that caused your error.
Run Virus Scan In Safe Mode
4. Run a complete virus scan. Start your computer in Safe Mode. Turn on your virus scan program as soon as Windows XP loads to your desktop.
5. Select "Full Scan." Start the scan process. This may take some time depending on the size of your hard drive.
6. Delete any infected viruses found. Reboot your computer.

7. Turn on your computer. Press F8 repeatedly until you see a black screen called "Windows Advanced Options Menu."
8. Select "Safe Mode with Networking" by using the arrow keys on your keyboard and press "Enter. Your computer will boot in safe mode and allow you access to the Internet.
9. Search the Internet for the virus found and follow the directions to remove it. A reliable place to search for information on viruses is the McAfee website. They have a database of known viruses and how you can remove them.
