The mower deck is a large, removable piece located underneath the body of the Sears riding lawn mower. Cutting blades are installed underneath the mower deck, which the operator raises or lowers, depending on the desired height for his lawn. Mower decks that are not level will give the grass an uneven cut. Leveling the Sears mower deck involves lowering the mower deck onto a flat surface and reinstalling it underneath the riding mower. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
Side to Side Leveling
1. Drive the Sears riding lawn mower to a flat piece of ground. Lift the mower deck until it is a few inches above the ground. Slide one 2-by-4 underneath rear of the mower deck, on the right-hand side. Place a second 2-by-4 underneath the mower deck directly behind the left mandrel pulley. This pulley is viewable between the top of the mower housing and the bottom of the lawn mower.
2. Lower the mower deck to the lowest cutting height. Loosen the two fasteners located behind the suspension arm on both sides of the mower deck with a wrench. Pull down on the suspension arms so that the bottom of the mower deck is resting on the two 2-by-4's.
3. Tighten the fastener farthest from the suspension arms first. While continuing to pull down on the arms, tighten the second fastener. Raise the mower deck using the lift control handle and pull the 2-by-4s out from underneath. Turn the height adjustment knob to position the mower deck to your desired grass-cutting height.
Front and Back Leveling
4. Measure the front links to ensure that they are each the same length. Adjust the links so that the lengths match. Generally the length should be 10 3/8-inches.
5. Loosen the first nuts located behind the front links. Count the number of turns you make to loosen the first nut and repeat with the same number of turns on the second nut.
6. Measure the distance from the front edge of the mower deck to the ground and then from the back edge of the mower deck to the ground. The bolts are loosened enough when the front edge of the mower deck is between 1/4-inch and 3/4-inch closer to the ground than the back edge.
7. Raise the front of the mower deck by loosening the nuts located behind the nuts you loosened in Step 2. Once the front of the deck is at the proper height, tighten the nuts located behind the nuts you loosened in Step 2.
