Common Issues
If your GE refrigerator is too warm, give it time to cool down if you just plugged it in. It can take up to 24 hours to cool down after you install it. Your refrigerator is also warmer if the doors are left open. Always properly close the doors, and refrain from opening the doors too frequently. If the doors aren't closing properly, push in any bins and move food items out of the pathways of the doors. Your refrigerator will necessarily be warmer after you add large amounts of food to it. Give it at least 4 hours to cool down.
Temperature Setting/Door Gasket
Your refrigerator won't get cold if the internal temperature setting is too high. Lower the temperature setting. If the refrigerator is too cold and items are freezing, raise the temperature setting to a higher level. If you see frost inside the refrigerator and it's still too warm, check the door gaskets. These prevent air from the home from flowing into the refrigerator. If the gaskets are brittle or torn, your refrigerator may be too warm. Replace the gaskets since you usually can't repair them.
Condenser
The condenser is comprised of different tubes that look like they have fins. The condenser helps cool the refrigerator. The condenser and the surrounding coils can get dirty. Disconnect the refrigerator from the power source, and use a soft cloth or brush to clean the condenser and coils. Plug your refrigerator back in, and turn it on. If it's still not cooling properly, the condenser may be defective. Get help from a repair person.
Additional Concerns
The compressor is located on the back of your GE refrigerator. If the compressor is operating loudly or not operating at all, it's probably defective, and you need to replace it. This is a difficult repair for most consumers. Contact a GE repair person to help you with this problem. Your refrigerator will not operate properly if the ambient temperature is lower than 60 degrees Fahrenheit or hotter than 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Adjust your home thermostat. Do not place large items against the back wall of the refrigerator. This prevents air from properly moving around the refrigerator.
