New Hampshire Regulations On Mobile Home Tiedowns

New Hampshire moblile tie-down rules follow HUD rules.

The Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development requires all mobile or manufactured homes, including single wides, double wides and triple wides to be anchored to the ground. This is because due to their boxy shape, flat roof and light weight, they are more vulnerable than traditional homes to strong winds. All manufacturers of manufactured housing in New Hampshire must file a manual with the New Hampshire Department of Safety showing anchoring instructions for every model of home they make. Does this Spark an idea?

Before Tie-Downs Are Installed

When the home is delivered, it is set up on an approved level pad with a slight slope which allows for drainage. Concrete footings and piers are installed to stabilize the load in accordance with New Hampshire regulations. After the home has been leveled and the piers installed, and has passed inspection by an engineer, the anchoring system can be installed.

Installing the Tie-Downs

New Hampshire is in Wind Zone 1, which means it is not likely to experience hurricane strength winds. The anchors and anchoring equipment must be certified by an engineer and be able to resist a minimum load capacity of 4,725 lbs. The anchors are made of metal and can be hammered or augered into the ground, or cast in concrete footings, depending upon which type you prefer. The number of anchors and spacing between them is shown in the manufacturer's manual. Tie-down cables or straps may be attached to the side wall or go over the top of older homes, and are fastened to the anchors.

Finishing Up

After the home has been anchored and passed inspection, a skirting should be installed to keep out vermin and water, with ventilation at a minimum of one square foot of free area for every 600 square feet of home area. There should also be an access opening for service technicians to access the crawl space.
