Adding plywood on top of an existing mobile home subfloor can strengthen the floor.
Mobile home flooring is not always of the best quality. The sub floor is frequently constructed of particle board, with carpet or linoleum installed on top of this. If the floor in your mobile home is becoming spongy or creaks excessively, one solution is to add a new layer on top of the existing sub floor. This solution is easier than the alternative, laying a new sub floor, which, because of the metal joist construction of the mobile home, presents difficulties. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Remove all furniture and other items from the mobile home.
2. Pry off any baseboards. Pull up existing carpeting and linoleum to expose the sub floor.
3. Lay a sheet of plywood square with one corner of the mobile home. Leave a gap of about 1/8 inch between the plywood and the walls, to allow for expansion and contraction. Fasten the plywood to the sub floor with wood screws spaced every 9 inches. Counter-sink the screws slightly to ensure the screw heads don't stick up. A power screwdriver will make this job much easier.
4. Measure and cut, if necessary, for the next piece. When installing the piece, leave a 1/8-inch gap between it and the previous piece. If you cut the wood, sand the edges to prevent splinters from sticking up.
5. Continue cutting and placing boards until the floor is completely covered. Install new baseboards after you install your floor coverings.
