How Does An Appliance Repair Person Spend A Workday

Introduction

An appliance repair person has a multi-faceted job, depending on how his shop operates. He may spend most of the day at the shop, or he may make house calls. Though it is not a daily occurrence, he must spend some of his time keeping updated on the new makes and models, and may have to attend seminars or classes on the different brands of machines and their electronics.

Starting the Day

Once the appliance repair person starts her day, she must look at the day's current orders. She will diagnose the problem with those orders, then set up a work order. If the part is in stock, she can complete the work order and call the customer to give her a price quote. If the part is not stocked, then she will contact one of her suppliers to find out if they have the part. Once she gathers that information, she can then call the customer and let her know the cost of fixing the appliance.

Repairs

The appliance repair person will then complete work orders that have been approved by the customer. Most shops will repair anything, but some do specialize. Repairs can be something simple to diagnose such as a broken belt, or it can be something as difficult as wiring.

House Calls

If the shop offers house calls, the appliance repair person will drive out to the address and diagnose the broken appliance. He will then give an estimate on the cost of the repair. If the customer agrees, she will then give the repair person the go ahead to fix the appliance. Once it is fixed, he either goes back to the shop or goes to the next address on his list.

Conclusion

An appliance repair person must be able to lift and move heavy items. He must also be able to read wiring diagrams and other diagrams to help with diagnosis of the problem. If he is the owner of the shop, he will also have to run sales and inventory reports, provide customer service, answer the phone, do his accounting and pay out any taxes due on parts and sales.
