Get Help With Winterization In Maine

If you live in Maine, you already know how important it is to winterize your home and protect yourself from those gusty Northeasters that bring high powered winds and blowing snow. For many, winterizing is a difficult task. Not only does it require able bodied people to get out there and bank the house and seal the windows; but the supplies can also be prohibitive for those living on fixed incomes. Fortunately there are several organizations that are ready to help. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Contact the Maine Housing Authority (see Resources) to apply for their weatherization and home heating program. Families with incomes below 150% of the poverty level (170% if someone in the home is over 60) are eligible for assistance with weatherizing their home. This includes insulation, weather stripping and caulking. Safety related home repairs may be included. Funds to replace faulty central heating systems are also available.

2. Check with local churches and nonprofit organizations. Many churches provide assistance by supplying volunteers who are willing to come to your home and do the work for you. You may need to buy the necessary supplies, but the labor will be free.

3. Contact your local cooperative extension office. They often run workshops in the fall of the year on weatherization and provide resources and tips for winterizing your home. Some offer free materials like water heater wraps to those who attend the workshop.

4. Contact the general assistance office in your town. They can help you with basic living costs and may be able to provide weatherization assistance, as well. They may be able to provide you with other options in your community.

5. Visit 211maine.org (see Resources) to search the database of services available throughout Maine. Click on the red square in the upper left hand corner and enter your search terms in the search box. You will be prompted to give your zip code to access a list of available services.

6. Talk to friends, relatives and neighbors and let them know what your needs are. Many are more than happy to lend a hand when they know you are in need.
